In a typical experiment, equimolar quantities (5 mmol) of the starting materials were dissolved in dichloromethane (20-50 ml) in the presence of benzyltriethylammonium chloride (3 mmol) and stirred magnetically under a nitrogen atmosphere as an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide (50%, w/v, 5 ml) was added dropwise over a period of 10 min. After being stirred for 2-36 h until analytical thin layer chromatography indicated that the reaction was complete, the mixture was diluted with water (50 ml) and the SBO was extracted with dichloromethane (3¡Á20 ml), dried (MgSO4), filtered, evaporated under reduced pressure and recrystallized from aqueous methanol or ethanol.

General procedure: IV, e.g. bromo-substituted 3H-1,3-benzoxazol-2-one, (1 eq.) was suspended in a 1:1 toluene/EtOH mixture (10 mL per mmol IV). The boronic acid V (1.5 eq.) was added followed by aq. NaCO3 (2 M, 0.55 mL per mmcl IV, 1.1 eq.). The resulting suspension was degassed undernitrogen for 10 mm, followed by addition of Pd(PPh3)4 (0.1 eq.) and heating under microwave irradiation at 100 C for 30 mm. The reaction mixture was diluted with EtOAc (40 mL per mmcl IV), and water (40 mL per mmcl IV) was added. The two phases were separated and the aqueous layer was extracted with EtOAc (2 x 40 mL per mmcl IV). The combined organic phases were dried over Na2SO4, evaporated on silica, and the compound was purified by column chromatography using the Teledyne ISCO apparatus (cyclohexane:EtOAc).The title compound was obtained according to the General Procedure II, starting from 6-bromobenzoxazolone (500 mg, 2.34 mmol) and (4-fluorophenyl)boronic acid (490 mg, 3.50mmol). INTERMEDIATE B2 7V-(4-Bromo-2-hydroxyphenyl)acetamide – -To a cooled (0 0C) suspension of 2-methyl-l,3-benzoxazol-6-amine (Intermediate Bl; 1.96 g, 13.2 mmol) in 1 M HBr (40 niL) was carefully added NaNO2 (1.38 g, 20 mmol). After stirring for 10 min, a solution of CuBr (2.92 g, 20 mmol) in water (14 mL) was added and the mixture was stirred at 0 0C for 5 min. The ice-bath was removed and the mixture was stirred overnight and then 25% aqueous ammonia (5 mL) was added. The mixture was extracted with EtOAc (500 mL) and the organic layer was concentrated. The residue was purified by flash chromatography on silica using MeOH/CHCl3 (0.05:1) as eluent. Yield 1.47 g (32%). Analytical HPLC: purity 100% (System A); LRESIMS (ESI+) m/z = 230/232 (M+H)+.

The reaction mixture was stirred at 30 C for 3 hr. Reaction was monitored by TLC. The reaction mixture was diluted with water(20 mL), dichloromethane (2 X 50 mL) and separated the organic layer. The organic layer was washed with saturated brine solution (25 mL), dried over anhydrous Na2S04, filtered and concentrated. The crude was triturated with 50%ether in hexane and submitted for analysis, LCMS (m/z): 255.19 [M+H]+.
