Triptycene-containing poly(benzoxazole-co-imide) membranes with enhanced mechanical strength for high-performance gas separation

Herein, a series of novel triptycene-containing thermally rearranged poly(benzoxazole-co-imide) membranes (TPI-PBOs) with enhanced mechanical properties and gas separation performance are reported. The effects of chemical structures and poly(benzoxazole-co-imide) composition on the fractional free volume, polymer chain packing, microcavity size and size distribution, mechanical properties, and gas transport properties have been comprehensively investigated. Due to the incorporation of triptycene-containing non-TR-able polyimide segments, the resulting poly(benzoxazole-co-imide) films exhibited good mechanical properties even after being treated at 450 degrees C. The incorporation of bulky and rigid triptycene units led to significantly improved fractional free volume and gas transport properties compared to previously reported poly(benzoxazole-co-imide)s. Several triptycene-containing poly(benzoxazole-co-imide) films displayed excellent gas separation performance for H-2/CH4, H-2/N-2, and CO2/CH4 gas pairs that exceeded the 2008 upper bounds.

Polymer Structure Prediction from First Principles

Developing a large database of polymers structures and properties, for which suitable polymer structural models are a prerequisite, is critical for polymer informatics. We present a simple strategy, referred to as polymer structure predictor (PSP), for predicting the crystal structural models of linear polymers, given their chain-level atomic connectivity information. The PSP, which was designed specifically for polymers, relies on properly defining and sampling the configuration space. Using this approach, we have successfully recovered eight known crystal structures of six common linear polymers, including polyethylene, polyvinylidene fluoride, poly(vinyl chloride), poly(p-phenylene sulfide), polyacrylonitrile, and poly-2,5-benzoxazole, while discovering some new stable structures of three of them, i.e., polyvinylidene fluoride, polyacrylonitrile, and poly(p-phenylene sulfide). The PSP is very simple, highly scalable, suitable for automatic workflows, and comparable to the best major structure prediction method in terms of efficiency in polymer crystal structure prediction. Although challenges in comprehensively accounting for possible chain-level conformations remain, the PSP will be very useful in efficiently generating polymer data and strengthening the emerging polymer informatics ecosystems.

New fluoroionophores for metal cations based on benzo[d]oxazol-5-yl-alanine bearing pyrrole and imidazole

A benzoxazole compound as a novel MEK inhibitor for the treatment of RAS/RAF mutant cancer

Mutations in RAS/RAF occur in large portion of malignancies and are associated with aggressive clinical behaviors and poor prognosis. Therefore, we developed a novel benzoxazole compound (KZ-001) as a highly potent and selective MEK 1/2 inhibitor. Our efforts were focused on enhancing the activity of the known MEK inhibitor AZD6244 and overcoming the shortcomings existing in current MEK inhibitors. Here we show that compound KZ-001 exhibits approximately 30-fold greater inhibition against BRAF- and KRAS-mutant tumor cells than that of AZD6244. These results were also demonstrated using in vivo xenograft models. Furthermore, pharmacokinetics (PK) analysis was performed for KZ-001, and this compound showed good orally bioavailability (28%) and exposure (AUC(0-infinity) = 337 +/- 169 ng h/mL). To determine its potential clinical application, the synergistic effect of KZ-001 with other agents was investigated both in vitro and in vivo (xenograft models). KZ-001 exhibited synergistic anti-cancer effect in combination with BRAF inhibitor vemurafenib and a microtubule-stabilizing chemotherapeutic agent docetaxel. In addition, KZ-001 inhibited the MAPK pathway like known MEK inhibitors. In summary, KZ-001, a structurally novel benzoxazole compound, was developed as a MEK inhibitor that has potential for cancer treatment.

For the first time in osmotic-driven systems, novel one-step direct fluorination was adopted to increase hydrophilicity of the ESM. Direct fluorination increased the total surface energy of the ESM by boosting polar surface energy parameter, which eventually affected the formation of ‘ridge & valley’-like thin film composite membrane (PBO-TFC-F5) through interfacial polymerization of the fluorinated ESM. As a result, PBO-TFC-F5 achieved an unprecedented power density of 87.2 W m(-2) using 3 M NaClaq as a draw solution at 27 bar. When PBO-TFC-F5 was used for osmotic heat engine (OHE), it showed a power generation cost of only 203 $center dot MWh(-1), which was less than half the cost observed using commercial membranes. This robust, porous, and high performance PBO-TFC-F5 opens up new possibilities in membrane-based power generation systems.
