Preparation of thermally rearranged poly(benzoxazole-co-imide) membranes containing heteroaromatic moieties for CO2/CH4 separation

Simultaneously achieving excellent mechanical properties and superior gas separation performance remains a great challenge for thermally rearranged polymers when applied as the membrane materials in large scale gas separation applications. Herein, different heteroaromatic non-TR-able codiamines containing benzimidazole/benzoxazole structures were incorporated into ortho-hydroxyl functionalized polyimide backbones, which were subsequently transformed into the poly(benzoxazole-co-polyimide) copolymers by thermal rearrangement (TR). In all cases, the solid-state TR reaction induces the increased preferential intersegmental distances (d-spacing) and fractional free volumes of polymer chains, favorable for the gas permeation. While, the pi-pi stacking distance exhibits opposite variation tendencies for benzimidazole-based and benzoxazole-based TR-PBOI membranes, which is demonstrated to make a significant effect on the gas selectivity. These TR-PBOI membranes thermally treated at 420 degrees C for 1 h exhibit higher tensile properties in relative to most of previously reported TR-PBOI membranes with the tensile strength of 97-118 MPa and initial modulus of 2.0-2.4 GPa. Moreover, incorporating heteroaromatic non-TR-able codiamines endows the resultant TR-PBOI membranes with excellent gas separation properties for the CO2/CH4 gas pairs with the CO2 permeability and CO2/CH4 ideal selectivity values exceeding the 1991 upper bound and close to 2008 upper bound. We anticipate this facile method will facilitate the large-scale preparation and application of TR membranes for gas separation.

Probing the Interaction of Nucleobases and Fluorophore-Tagged Nucleobases with Graphene Surface: Adsorption and Fluorescence Studies

Adsorption of a fluorophore-labeled DNA oligonucleotide by graphene nano-probes is of interest to exploit as bio-sensing material. This work reports the fluorescence properties of fluorophore tagged nucleobases on the graphene surface computationally. The interaction of nucleobases and fluorophore tagged nucleobases to the graphene surface examined using M062X/6-31G(d) level of theory in the gas phase and ethanol solvent. The binding energies of nucleobases on the graphene surface in the gas phase follows the order: G>A >= C >= T in agreement with the previous reports. The slab model calculations performed with LDA/PWC/DND level of theory also revealed a similar binding affinity on the graphene surface in the gas phase. The fluorescence of benzoxazole as fluorophore tagged with nucleobase on graphene surface was investigated using TD-DFT M06-2X/6-31G(d) level of theory. The binding preference of the fluorophore tagged nucleobases is not significantly different in ethanol solvent. The aromaticity of the nucleobases tagged fluorophore on the graphene surface was investigated by NICS (1) and NICS (1)(zz) calculations and the aromaticity was found to be increased upon interaction with the graphene surface. The fluorescence quenching upon binding of fluorophore tagged nucleobases on graphene surface revealed the importance of purine nucleobases and found to be more prominent with guanine tagged fluorophore.

Synthesis and antimicrobial evaluation of novel 5-substituted-2-(p-tert-butylphenyl)benzoxazoles

In the present study, a series of nine novel 5-substituted-2-(p-tert-butylphenyl)benzoxazole derivatives have been synthesized and their structures confirmed by spectral techniques and also tested for their antimicrobial activities. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of the new benzoxazoles have been determined against standard bacterial and fungal strains and drug-resistant isolates and compared to those of several reference drugs. The new benzoxazole derivatives are found to possess a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity with MIC values of 8-256 mu g/mL. Especially, compound 9 is more active than standard drugs ciprofloxacin and cefotaxime against E. coli isolate with a MIC value of 8 mu g/mL. Also new compounds are less active than fluconazole with a MIC value of 256 mu g/mL against C. albicans and its isolate except for compound 9 that shows better activity other compounds with a MIC value of >4 mu g/mL for their antifungal activity.

Tuning the heat resistance properties of polyimides by intermolecular interaction strengthening for flexible substrate application

Intrinsic polyimides (PIs) with high glass transition temperature (T-g), excellent thermal stability, and favorable mechanical properties have been in great demand in recent years with the rapid development of flexible displays. In this work, an interchain-interaction strengthener has been introduced to obtain PIs with improved thermal resistance and stability. Benzimidazole-based diamines imparting rigidity, conjugation, crosslinking, and especially hydrogen bonding have been incorporated into benzoxazole-polyimide. Frequency shifts in the IR bands spectra of C=O and N-H bonds were indicative of strong hydrogen bonding in benzimidazole-incorporating PIs, resulting in an increase in T-g from 333 degrees C to 442 degrees C. Furthermore, because of more extensive hydrogen bonding, PIs containing bis-benzimidazole units exhibited much higher crystallinity and T-g than those containing mono-benzimidazole units. The 5% weight loss temperature (T-d(5)) was above 550 degrees C because of the rigidity of the conjugated structure and the tightly packed state of the polymer chains. T-g and T-d(5) of PIs annealed in air were higher than those of samples annealed in vacuo, whereas the opposite trend was seen in crystallinity and mechanical properties. Finally, we delineated the effects of intermolecular interaction strengthener and annealing atmosphere on the properties of PIs, which may be helpful for the future design of flexible PI substrates.

Improved mesophase property is ascribed to reduced dipole moment resulting from introduction of lateral fluorine atom in opposite direction of polar benzoxazole unit. This indicates that monofluorine substituent contributes to improve nematic mesophase for benzoxazole-terminated mesogenic compounds. In addition, the compounds nPEFPBx have high birefringence of 0.513-0.650 because of large p-conjugated mesogenic core composed of benzene, ethynyl and benzoxazole groups, which suggests a possible application in liquid crystal mixture to enhance birefringence. Meanwhile, except nPEFPBN, the compounds nPEFPBx show intense photoluminescence emission at 406-407 nm in methylene chloride solution with exciting them at absorption maxima. [GRAPHICS] .
