The PCN pincer Pd(II) complexes 4a-c with (phosphinito)aryl benzimidazole ligands were conveniently synthesized by one-pot phosphorylation/palladation reaction of a (2-benzimidazolyl)-containing m-phenol derivative 3. The three complexes were well characterized by spectroscopic methods, elemental analysis and their molecular structures were further determined by X-ray single-crystal diffraction. The Pd(II) center in each complex adopts a typical distorted-square-planar geometry. With a catalyst loading of 0.25-0.5 mol%, complex 4a could effectively catalyze C-H arylation of benzothiazole, benzoxazole and thiazole with various aryl iodides in the presence of Cul as a cocatalyst. Synthesis and DSSC application of triazole bridged dendrimers with benzoheterazole surface groups

Triazole bridged dendrimers with benzoheterazole surface groups were successfully synthesized in high yields by click chemistry via convergent approach. The photophysical properties of the dendrimers reveal that as the generation increases the light absorption ability also increases. The fluorescence intensity gradually decreases as the dendritic generation increases because of fluorescence quenching due to steric crowding of the dendritic arms. On increasing the number of benzoheterazole unit at periphery, the anodic peak was shifted to higher positive potential in cyclic voltammetry. When the synthesized triazole dendrimers are utilized as an additive in the redox couple of a DSSC, the lower generation dendrimers showed better current generating capacity with higher power conversion efficiency than the higher generation dendrimers.

Effect of substitution on the solid-state fluorescence properties of styrylbenzoxazole derivatives with terminal dicyanomethylene group

Three styrylbenzoxazole derivatives with terminal dicyanomethylene group were studied in order to understand how minor modifications brought to the benzoxazole ring influence the photoluminescence (PL) properties. The three compounds, in which several molecular motions are allowed, were weakly fluorescent in organic solution. Remarkably, the unsubstituted (1) and methoxy (2) derivatives showed clear solid-state luminescence enhancement (SLE). Distinct emission characteristics were attributed to the formation of amorphous and crys-talline particles owing to scanning electron microscopy. These two compounds were also strongly luminescent as microcrystalline powders. Compound 1 that crystallized in herringbone configuration was a better emitter than the methoxy derivative 2, in which intermolecular interactions are more numerous, according to X-ray diffraction analysis. In contrast, compound 3 was virtually not emissive, confirming that in this series of dyes the presence of the hydroxy group is detrimental to PL emission, as rarely observed among SLE-active fluorophores.

QSAR Modeling and Drug-Likeness Screening for Antioxidant Activity of Benzofuran Derivatives

In order to explore the relationship between the antioxidant activity and structure of fifteen benzofuran derivatives, we carried out a QSAR study using multiple linear regression (MLR) and artificial neural network (ANN) methods. Six descriptors were used as input data (molar weight, surface area, octanol-water partition coefficient, hydration energy, highest occupied molecular orbital energy and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy). The electronic properties were derived at the B3LYP/6-31 G (d,p) level. Benchmarks on furan and benzofuran subunits and their comparison to the experiment showed that this level of theory is good enough. The output data correspond to the antioxidant activity as given by IC50. The predicted properties are in agreement with experimental values. Our study shows that 80% of studied molecules are in accordance with the Lipinski and Veber rules and reach the optimal lipophilicity indices. In addition, statistical analysis reveals that ANN technique with (6-2-1) architecture is more significant than MLR model. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Synthesis and application of benzoxazole derivative-based fluorescent probes for naked eye recognition

A fluorescent probe to detect biothiols (GSH/Hcy/Cys) was synthesized with benzothiazole as the fluorophore and nitromethane as the recognition group. The recognition mechanism of the fluorescent probe was deduced. It was found that a nitroalkene in the molecule was used as the recognition site for this probe and reacted with the mercapto group of the biothiols by electrophilic addition, significantly enhancing the fluorescent signal. Experimental results showed that the fluorescent probe had a low detection limit, good selectivity, strong anti-interference ability, and good naked eye recognition. The probe could detect biothiols (GSH/Hcy/Cys) in 20% organic solvent, with detection limits of 0.33 mu M, 0.70 mu M, and 0.87 mu M, respectively. The probe will be applied further in biosensors and other fields.

Benzoxazole derivatives: design, synthesis and biological evaluation

Background: A new series of benzoxazole analogues was synthesized and checked for their in vitro antibacterial, antifungal and anticancer activities. Results and discussion: The synthesized benzoxazole compounds were confirmed by IR, H-1/C-13-NMR, mass and screened for their in vitro antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive bacterium: Bacillus subtilis, four Gram-negative bacteria: Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Salmonella typhi and two fungal strains: Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger using tube dilution technique and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was noted in mu M and compared to ofloxacin and fluconazole. Human colorectal carcinoma (HCT116) cancer cell line was used for the determination of in vitro anticancer activity (IC50 value) by Sulforhodamine B assay using 5-fluorouracil as standard drug. Conclusion: The performed study indicated that the compounds 1, 10, 13, 16, 19, 20 and 24 had highest antimicrobial activity with MIC values comparable to ofloxacin and fluconazole and compounds 4, 6, 25 and 26 had best anticancer activity in comparison to 5-fluorouracil.

Benzoxazole and dioxolane substituted benzimidazole-based N-heterocyclic carbene-silver( I) complexes: Synthesis, structural characterization and in vitro antimicrobial activity

A novel series of 1,3-benzoxazole and 1,3-dioxolane substituted benzimidazole-based N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) precursors (6a-b and 11a-b) and their corresponding NHC-silver(I) acetate (12a-b and 14a-b) and bis-NHC-silver(I) hexafluorophosphate complexes (13a-b and 15a-b) were synthesized and characterized by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, ATR-IR spectroscopic methods and elemental analysis techniques. Also, the molecular structure of benzimidazolium salt (6a) and bis-NHC-silver(I) hexafluorophosphate complex (13b) were unambiguously established by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Fascinatingly, bis-NHC-silver(I) hexafluorophosphate complex (13b) was revealed to be dinuclear in nature. All the azolium salts (6a-b and 11a-b) as well as the corresponding silver(I) complexes (12a-b, 13a-b, 14a-b and 15a-b) were evaluated for their antimicrobial potential against Gram positive (Staphylococcus aureus), and a set of Gram negative (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) bacterial strains and two fungi, Candida albicans and Cryptococcus neoformans. Antimicrobial studies revealed the comparable activities of benzimidazolium salts (6a-b and 11a-b) and the silver(I) complexes (12a-b, 13a-b and 15a-b). Whereas, the 1,3-dioxolane substituted benzimidazole-based silver(I) acetate complexes (14a-b) demonstrated excellent potentials with both bacterial and fungal growth inhibition above 95%. We report an efficient palladium-catalyzed approach to the synthesis of benzoxazole derivatives via sequential heteroarylation/acylation reaction of iodobenzenes. A novel coordination mode of kappa(1)-N-Br-pyridylbenz-(imida, oxa or othia)-zole to Pt(II): synthesis, characterization, electrochemical and structural analysis

Herein, three novel Pt(II) complexes with formula [trans-Pt(Br-PyBenz-X)(Cl)(2)(DMSO)] (1-3) having Br-pyridylbenz-(imida, oxa or othia)-zole (L1-3) derivatives as potential bidentate ligands, under an unusual kappa(1)-N-coordination mode are reported. All compounds were obtained straightforwardly via reaction of corresponding LPB1-3 and [Pt(Cl)(2)(DMSO)(2)] (DMSO = dimethyl sulfoxide), at 100 degrees C in acetonitrile, respectively. 1-3 complexes were characterized by analytical and spectroscopic data: melting point, FT-IR, Raman, UV/Vis and NMR experiments. Cyclic voltammetry studies show an irreversible two-electron process at -0.50 and -0.51 V, which was ascribed to the Pt(II)/Pt(IV) couple, for complexes 2 and 3. The crystal structure of complex 2 was elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, where the platinum atom exhibits a square plane geometry, where L-PB2 adopts an unusual mono-coordinated mode via an N-kappa(1)-benzoxazole ring. According to DFT calculations the first N-coordination exchanging one DMSO molecule is favourable, while the second N-coordination is highly impeded.
