Thermally Rearranged Polybenzoxazoles Containing Bulky Adamantyl Groups from Ortho-Substituted Precursor Copolyimides

A new nucleophilic monomer (2,2-bis(3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl)adamantane, ADHAB) having bulky adamantane groups has been synthesized following an efficient synthetic methodology. The main target of this work was to employ a high thermal stable bulky cycloaliphatic moiety as adamantane to obtain aromatic ortho-hydroxypolyimides (poly(o-hydroxyimide)s) able to thermally rearrange to give polybenzoxazole (TR-PBO) materials that could be tested as gas separation membranes. Thus, an array of ortho-acetylcopolyimides, o-acetyl PIs) were prepared by reaction of ADHAB and 2,2-bis(3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane (APAF) with 2,2-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane dianhydride (6FDA) via chemical imidization. Copolyimides and homopolyimides showed inherent viscosities ranging from 0.49 to 0.70 dL/g and provided good-quality dense membranes. Glass transition temperatures of these o-acetyl copolyimides were higher as the amount of ADHAB increased. The thermal stability of the adamantane moiety during the TR process was evaluated by directly synthesizing PBOs, which were made from the reaction, and ulterior thermal cyclization, of 2,2-bis(4-chlorocarbonylphenyl)-hexafluoropropane with ADHAB/APAF. TR-PBO membranes made through a thermal treatment at 450 degrees C for 30 min showed excellent gas separation properties for the CO2/CH4 gas pair with values close to the 2008 Robeson limit.

Thermosets containing benzoxazole units: Liquid-crystalline behavior and thermal conductivity

A series of liquid-crystalline (LC) thermosetting monomers containing benzoxazole (BO) units were synthesized to evaluate the thermal conductivities (lambda) of their cured resins. A BO-containing bisnadiimide system showed LC behavior during the heating process. However, the thermal cure of the bisnadiimide provided a film without optical anisotropy; consequently, the cured film exhibited normal levels of thermal diffusivity (alpha) and thermal conductivity (lambda). The disappearance of the optically anisotropic ordered structures during thermal curing is likely related to the temperature gaps between the cure reaction ranges and LC ranges (T-cure-T-LC gap). In addition, epoxy resins consisting of bisepoxides and BO-containing diamines were investigated because of their high flexibility in terms of molecular design that can be used to reduce the T-cure-T-LC gap. The combination of a terephthalylidene-type bisepoxide and BO-containing diamine with a controlled flexible chain length resulted in the smallest T-cure-T-LC gap among the epoxy resin systems examined herein. The cured epoxy resin film exhibited an appreciably increased lambda value (0.257 W m(-1) K-1) in the Z direction. This indicated the importance of the T-cure-T-LC gap for enhancing the alpha and lambda values of the cured films. This epoxy resin system was cured under a continuous DC electric field during polarizing optical microscopy. A prompt response with deformation of the LC domains was observed in harmony with temporal ON/OFF switching of the DC power supply. As expected, the cured film exhibited a significantly enhanced lambda value (0.488 W m(-1) K-1) in the Z direction.

The endogenous X-CO species, derived from theN-methyl-substituted amide-based solvent [Me2N-C(O)-R], especially PolarClean, andO-formyl group [O-C(O)-H] ofin situformed silyl formate, were found to play a prominent promotional role in the activation of the used hydrosilane for reductive CO(2)insertion, as demonstrated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and isotopic labeling experiments. Moreover, reaction mechanisms and condition-based sensitivity assessment were also delineated.

A theoretical prediction about harnessing ESPT process for HBO derivatives

The different excited-state behaviors involved in excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) process of a series of 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzoxazole (HBO) derivatives have been theoretically investigated. The primary bond lengths and bond angles were analyzed. Coupling with the infrared (IR) vibrational spectra, we confirmed that the intramolecular hydrogen bond O-HN should be strengthened in the S-1 state, which might provide the possibility for ESPT reaction, whereas introducing the fused rings may weaken the hydrogen bond in excited state. By investigating the vertical excitation process, the charge redistribution was explored. It is found that the electron-accepting -NO2 and -COOH would facilitate the ESPT reaction. With adding fused rings to HBO, less charge transfer exists in the transition process, which can reasonably explain the weakening hydrogen bond phenomenon in excited states. Via constructing the potential energy curves of both S-0 and S-1 states, we further confirm that electron-accepting substitutions could promote the ESPT process for HBO systems. And fused rings do inhibit ESPT reaction to a great extent. We believe this work not only elaborates the different excited-state proton transfer behaviors for a series of HBO derivatives but also presents a new harnessing ESPT process through substitutional effects.

Due to structural difference between 1 and 2 (anthracen-9-yl in 1, and pyren-1-yl in 2), they behave as designers pre-catalysts and show different catalytic behaviour and nature by dispensing the nanoparticles of different materials (PdS by 1 and Pd16S7 by 2). This is an unprecedented observation as the size of the aryl substituent controls the efficiency (efficiency: 1 > 2) through determining the composition and nature of insitu generated nanoparticles.
