Intrinsic polyimides (PIs) with high glass transition temperature (T-g), excellent thermal stability, and favorable mechanical properties have been in great demand in recent years with the rapid development of flexible displays. In this work, an interchain-interaction strengthener has been introduced to obtain PIs with improved thermal resistance and stability. Frequency shifts in the IR bands spectra of C=O and N-H bonds were indicative of strong hydrogen bonding in benzimidazole-incorporating PIs, resulting in an increase in T-g from 333 degrees C to 442 degrees C. Furthermore, because of more extensive hydrogen bonding, PIs containing bis-benzimidazole units exhibited much higher crystallinity and T-g than those containing mono-benzimidazole units. The 5% weight loss temperature (T-d(5)) was above 550 degrees C because of the rigidity of the conjugated structure and the tightly packed state of the polymer chains. T-g and T-d(5) of PIs annealed in air were higher than those of samples annealed in vacuo, whereas the opposite trend was seen in crystallinity and mechanical properties. Finally, we delineated the effects of intermolecular interaction strengthener and annealing atmosphere on the properties of PIs, which may be helpful for the future design of flexible PI substrates.

The gas transport properties of the mixed matrix membranes (MMM) prepared from the synthesized, structurally different poly(hydroxyimide)s (HPI) and mesoporous MCM-41 silica particles were investigated. The both series of filled and unfilled precursors were used to obtain and examine thermally rearranged (TR) polybenzoxazoles (PBO). The effect of a number and position of hydroxyl groups in HPI chains as well as that of filler presence on TR conversion was studied using FTIR, DSC, TGA, WAXD, SEM, mechanical testing, and density measurements. With 7 wt% of MCM-41 silica, gas permeability of the filled HPI precursors and that of the respective filled PBOs increased 1.5-2.2 and 4.4-15.1 times, respectively, comparing to the neat HPIs. The permeability increase along with relatively low loss of gas selectivity for filled membranes shift them towards the upper bound demonstrating that incorporation of porous fillers into polybenzoxazoles precursors can be a new approach to improve membrane performance.

Thus, an array of ortho-acetylcopolyimides, o-acetyl PIs) were prepared by reaction of ADHAB and 2,2-bis(3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane (APAF) with 2,2-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane dianhydride (6FDA) via chemical imidization. Copolyimides and homopolyimides showed inherent viscosities ranging from 0.49 to 0.70 dL/g and provided good-quality dense membranes. Glass transition temperatures of these o-acetyl copolyimides were higher as the amount of ADHAB increased. The thermal stability of the adamantane moiety during the TR process was evaluated by directly synthesizing PBOs, which were made from the reaction, and ulterior thermal cyclization, of 2,2-bis(4-chlorocarbonylphenyl)-hexafluoropropane with ADHAB/APAF. TR-PBO membranes made through a thermal treatment at 450 degrees C for 30 min showed excellent gas separation properties for the CO2/CH4 gas pair with values close to the 2008 Robeson limit.

Fabrication, characterization, and properties of novel poly(benzimidazole-amide)/functionalized ZnO nanocomposites (PBIA/APS-ZnO NCs) were investigated. At first, an aromatic PBA containing 3 imidazole units per repeat unit was synthesized by direct polycondensation of 1,3-bis(5-carboxylic acid-2-benzimidazole)benzene (BCAB) with 5-(2-benzimidazole)-1,3-phenylenediamine (DAMI) with good yield as a polymeric matrix. The periphery of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) was modified with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS) to have a better dispersion NPs and enhancing interactions between nanoparticles and PBIA matrix. Different percentages of functionalized NPs (0, 4, 8, and 12wt.%) were then embedded in PBA matrix through ultrasonic irradiation technique. Fourier transform infrared and thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) confirmed that APS was successfully attached on the ZnO NP surface. The obtained NCs were characterized by means of Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and TGA. The TGA of the PBIA/APS-ZnO NCs showed the enhancement in the thermal stability in comparison with the neat PBIA and that this increase is higher when the NP content increases. Scanning electron microscopy analyses of NCs revealed that the dispersion of APS-ZnO NPs was uniformly done in the PBIA matrix.

Meanwhile, the 5 wt% weight loss temperature (T-d5) of the resultant resins increases from 455 degrees C for the cured PI to 491 degrees C for the PI-co-PBO-60 containing 60 mol% benzoxazole unit, and correspondingly, the tensile modulus of PI-co-PBO-60 reaches 2.47 GPa, which is 76% higher than that of the cured PI. These resultant PI-co-PBOs exhibit the combined excellent properties, indicating them a great potentials as the new low-dielectric constant polymer resins in microelectronic industries or advanced composites.
