A novel highly thermal stable propargyl functional compound containing benzoxazole ring, N, N, N, N-tetra propargyl-5-amino-2-(p-aminophenyl) benzoxazole (TPAPB), was proposed and synthesized using a phase-transfer catalytic method. The cure behavior of TPAPB was investigated by non-isothermal differential scanning calorimetry analysis. The solubility and rheological properties of TPAPB, as well as its broad temperature window from 130 degrees C to 200 degrees C with low viscosity, offered excellent processability for TPAPB to be used as a potential monomer of thermosetting polymer resin. It was found that the glass transition temperature of cured TPAPB was 359 degrees C, and the temperature of 5% weight loss was 418 degrees C in argon with the char residue up to 70% at 700 degrees C. The polymerized resin exhibited high heat resistance and thermal stability, together with its processability, making it good candidate as highly heat-resistant polymer matrix for advanced composite applications.

The compounds show enantiotropic smectic/nematic phases with mesophase ranges are 71-97 degrees C and 87-136 degrees C on heating and cooling processes for nPPF(2)BP, respectively. They give low melting points due to lateral fluoro substituent and flexible terminal 2-propenyloxymethyl chain. It is found that the compounds nPPF(2)BP with shorter alkoxy chain (n = 3, 4) exhibit a wide range of nematic mesophase, which is ascribed to enhanced pi-pi interaction caused by terminal vinyl moiety, whereas further elongation of the terminal alkoxy chain results in supressing nematic phase and increasing smectic mesophase. Compared with methyl terminated analogues, 2-propenyloxymethyl terminated compounds nPPF(2)BP display much lower melting points and wider or comparable mesophase range both in heating and cooling. In this work, a novel ratiometric fluorescence probe is developed based on through-bond energy transfer (TBET) with a 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzoxazole (HBO) as donor and a Rhodamine derivative-Hg conjugate (RDM-Hg) as acceptor. Hg2+ weakens the fluorescence of HBO at 430 nm and meanwhile interacts with Rhodamine B derivative to form a fluorescent conjugate (RDM-Hg) giving rise to emission at 597 nm with a 167 nm red-shift. Further, the difference 282 nm between the donor absorption (315 nm) and the accepter emission (597 nm) for 1 + Hg2+ is comparable to the highest value of the Stokes shift (282 nm) reported earlier for other reported TBET-based cassette. Through-bond energy transfer from HBO to RDM-Hg is triggered by Hg2+ resulting in concentration dependent variation of fluorescence ratio I-597/I-430. A linear calibration of I-597/I-430 versus Hg2+ concentration is obtained within 0-5 mu M, along with the lowest detection limit being found to be as low as 1.31 x 10(-9) mol center dot l(-1) (similar to 0.26 ppb) for Hg2+. This feature is further demonstrated by colorimetric imaging of test strip and intracellular Hg2+. On the other hand, the HBO/RDM TBET sensing system is characterized by a combination of high sensitivity and selectivity. The present study provides an approach for further development of ratiometric probes dedicated to selective in vitro or in vivo sensing some species of biologically interest.

The antibacterial activity of the most promising compound, 17b (Q151), is derived from the inhibition of MtbIMPDH2 as demonstrated by conditional knockdown and resistant strains. Importantly, guanine does not change the MIC of 17b, alleviating the concern that guanine salvage can protect Mtb in vivo. New difluoroboron beta-ketoiminate boron complexes bearing benzoxazole (CBO) and benzothiazole (CBS) have been synthesized. It was found that CBO was almost non-emissive in THF, and the emission could be intensified significantly when great amount of H2O was added, illustrating AIE (aggregation-induced emission) property. CBS could not show AIE property in THF/H2O system, but its emission in solid state was also strong. The single crystal structure of CBS suggested that pi-pi interactions and the hydrogen bonds of C(Ar) – F center dot center dot center dot H, C(Ar) – H center dot center dot center dot S and C(Ar) – H center dot center dot center dot Cl would suppress the rotation of single bonds, resulting into obvious emission enhancement. It is interesting that the as-synthesized crystals of CBO and CBS both emitted azure light, and the grinding made their emitting colors to change into cyan and green, which could be recovered under fuming with DCM or heating. The reversible mechanofluorochromism was due to the transformation between crystalline and amorphous states, which could be confirmed from the results of absorption spectra, XRD patterns and DSC curves in different solid states. Additionally, the high-contrast mechanofluorochromism of CBS compared with CBO might be originated from the loose packing in crystalline state and the better pi-electron delocalization.

The excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process of 6-amino-2-(2 ‘-hydroxyphenyl) benzoxazole (6A-HBO) was investigated using density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory methods with B3LYP and TZVP basis sets. n-Heptane, dichloromethane, methanol, and acetonitrile were chosen as a series of polar solvents in calculations using the IEFPCM model. To obtain a more comprehensive ESIPT mechanism, we constructed the S-0 and S-1 states’ potential energy surfaces (PESs) by incrementally twisting the OH bond and increasing the distance of O-H bond. Based on the analysis of the bond lengths, the IR vibrational spectra, and the frontier molecular orbits (MOs), the intramolecular hydrogen bonding (OH…N) is clearly strengthened, and the charge is redistributed in the S-1 state. The results of calculated absorption spectrum are in accord with the experimental data. The fluorescence spectrum of 6A-HBO-enol showed a normal red shift, but the red shift of the 6A-HBO-keto is larger and increases with the solvent polarity, indicating a charge transfer. Analysis of the PESs indicates a lower potential energy barrier in S-1 state for the proton transfer from the O atom to the N atom, with the excited state potential barrier slightly decreasing with the increase of the solvent polarity.
