Considering their growing attention in the field of medicinal chemistry and drug-discovery research, the facile and convenient approaches towards the preparation of 2-aryl benzoxazole derivatives have been described. The transformation is accomplished by using Fe(III)-catalyzed C-H activation of benzoxazoles with boronic acids to obtain a wide range of C2-arylated benzoxazoles in high yields. The developed method excludes the formation of self-coupling compounds as side products. On the other hand, the synthesis of the products is also achieved via a metal-free domino protocol by the reaction between 1-nitroso-2-naphthol and acetophenones using catalytic amounts of CBr4 in the presence of Cs2CO3 as base. The devised tandem method avoids the use of pre-activated alpha-haloketones as substrates. Due to their immense impact in marketed drugs and molecules under clinical trial, the described method can be a powerful tool for their synthesis which restricts the use of precious metals as catalyst.

A novel benzoxazole appended dipodal Schiff base (BS) was synthesized and its sensing property was investigated. The receptor BS detected Zn2+ ions selectively by turn-on fluorescence among the wide range of metal ions in DMSO-H2O (1:9 v/v, 50 mM HEPES (4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1-piperazineethanesulfonic acid) at pH 7.4. The different physicochemical parameters of BS-Zn2+ complex were investigated by UV-vis, photoluminescence, H-1 NMR titration and ESI-MS techniques. The limit of detection (LOD) and binding constant (K-b) of BS-Zn2+ complex have been determined by fluorescence titration and found to be 4.53 x 10(4) M-1 and 0.52 mu M. Moreover, binding ratio of BS and Zn2+ was found to be 1:1 by Job’s method. Further, the BS-Zn2+ complex was used to sense pyrophosphate (PPi) ions as a secondary sensor in HEPES buffer solution. Overall, the sensitive fluorescence behavior of the receptor BS has been utilized as a powerful tracker for zinc ion and pyrophosphate ion in biological systems.

Suspended particles (SPs) were separated from an FCC Slurry Oil (SLO) via centrifugation with the aid of toluene-dilution. Further solvent extraction of SPs with CS2/toluene (50 V/V%) mixed solvent would generate solvent extraction insolubles (SEINS) and solubles (SES). They were sent for a series of chemical and structural characterizations, respectively, in the hope of providing clues to address issues from sedimentation and clarification processes. It was found that SPs were composed of catalyst fragments and organic substances wrapped around them, serving as a shield. The characterizations from TEM and XPS strongly suggested that the outer surface of SEINS was sufficient in oxygen-containing sites (organic functional groups and aluminosilicate), while the outer surface of SPs was not. High oxygen content and almost same nitrogen content of SES, comparable with that of asphaltenes, were detected through XPS characterization. This rationalized the strong adsorption of SES on SEINS in the form of a tedious solvent extraction process. A new structure of SPs has thus been described on the basis of these characterizations. Design sedimentation experiments verified the SPs’ structure. Furthermore, the experiments offered a promising way for acquiring high clarification efficiency with rather low usage of sinking agent through solvent pretreatment. A series of N-(2-(3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)benzoxazole-5-yl)benzamide derivatives (3am) was synthesized and evaluated for their in vitro inhibitory activity against COX-1 and COX-2. The compounds with considerable in vitro activity (IC50<1M) were evaluated in vivo for their anti-inflammatory potential by the carrageenan-induced rat paw edema method. Out of 13 newly synthesized compounds, 3a, 3b, 3d, 3g, 3j, and 3k were found to be the most potent COX-2 inhibitors in the in vitro enzymatic assay, with IC50 values in the range of 0.06-0.71M. The in vivo anti-inflammatory activity of these six compounds (3a, 3b, 3d, 3g, 3j, and 3k) was assessed by the carrageenan-induced rat paw edema method. Compounds 3d (84.09%), 3g (79.54%), and 3a (70.45%) demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory activity compared to the standard drug ibuprofen (65.90%) and were also found to be safer than ibuprofen, by ulcerogenic studies. A docking study was done using the crystal structure of human COX-2, to understand the binding mechanism of these inhibitors to the active site of COX-2. We have recently reported a strongly luminescent osmium(VI) nitrido complex [Os-VI(N)(NO2-L)(CN)(3)](-) [HNO2-L = 2-(2-hydroxy-5-nitrophenyl)benzoxazole]. The excited state of this complex readily activates the strong C-H bonds of alkanes and arenes (Commun. Chem. 2019, 2, 40). In this work, we attempted to tune the excited-state properties of this complex by introducing various substituents on the bidentate L ligand. The series of nitrido complexes were characterized by IR, UV/vis, H-1 NMR, and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. The molecular structures of five of the nitrido compounds have been determined by X-ray crystallography. The photophysical and electrochemical properties of these complexes have been investigated. The luminescence of these nitrido complexes in the solid state, in a CH2Cl2 solution, and in a CH2Cl2 solid matrix at 77 K glassy medium clearly shows that these emissions are due to (LML)-L-3’CT [L ligand to Os (math)N] phosphorescence. The presence of strongly electron-withdrawing substituents in these complexes enhances the LML’CT emission. Our result demonstrates that the excited-state properties of this novel class of luminescent osmium(VI) nitrido complexes can be fine-tuned by introducing various substituents on the bidentate L ligand.

Flexible poly(benzoxazole-co-amide) (PBOA) gas separation hollow fiber membranes were successfully prepared deriving from ether-containing polyamide precursors by thermal densification with or without a supplementary coating treatment. Compared with polyimide precursors, thermally rearrangement in this work required lower treatment temperature but generated better mechanical properties. Both spinning process and thermal treatment conditions were systemically manipulated to intensify the membrane densification aiming at achieving greatly improved selectivity of the obtained TR-PBOA hollow fiber membranes. It was found that draft ratio had little contribution to selectivity enhancement. Separation performance was substantially improved when precursor fibers were dried using ethanol-hexane exchange method and then thermally treated at 350-390 degrees C TR hollow fibers obtained by combined thermal treatment with coating method exhibited the highest selectivity values in this study.

The fluorescence behaviors and properties of three novel photoactive mono-formylated benzoxazole derivatives A-C are found to be affected by different heterocycles and solvents, as reported in a recent experiment (Rodembusch, et al., New J. Chem., 2016, 40, 2785). Unfortunately, the detailed excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) mechanisms of these compounds are lacking. In this study, we used density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) methods to study the dynamic ESIPT processes of the three compounds A-C in two different surroundings (polar 1,4-dioxane and nonpolar dichloromethane solvents). The calculated absorption and fluorescence spectra were observed to mutually agree with the experimental data, which indicated that the TDDFT method we adopted was reliable. In addition, based on the analysis of bond lengths, bond angles and IR vibrational spectra in both solvents, it was confirmed that the intramolecular hydrogen bonds (HBs) of these compounds were strengthened in the S-1 state, which could promote the ESIPT reactions. Moreover, the frontier molecular orbitals (MOs) and the maps of the electron density difference between the S-0 and S-1 states displayed intramolecular charge transfer, which provided the probability of ESIPT reactions for the three compounds. Furthermore, based on the constructed potential energy curves, we revealed detailed dynamical ESIPT mechanisms of the compounds A-C. As a consequence, we found that the ESIPT processes were more likely to take place from A (8.48 kcal mol(-1)) B (5.36 kcal mol(-1)) C (0.75 kcal mol(-1)) compounds in the polar 1,4-dioxane solvent, whereas the sequence changed to B (4.01 kcal mol(-1)) A (1.30 kcal mol(-1)) C (1.15 kcal mol(-1)) in the nonpolar dichloromethane solvent. Additionally, it could be determined that the solvent polarity had a tremendous effect on compound A, whereas the effect on compound C was the smallest.

A series of methacrylamides containing benzoxazole (BO) mesogenic side groups and different lengths of alkyl units was synthesized in this study. A methacrylamide containing the n-dodecyl group was selected as a suitable monomer to obtain beneficial thermally conductive polymeric materials because of its sufficient solubility in toluene in the subsequent radical polymerization and because of its liquid crystallinity. This methacrylamide led to a highly soluble polymer with film-forming ability. The BO-containing polymethacrylamide also exhibited liquid-crystalline (LC) behavior during the heating and cooling processes. The cast film was kept at a slightly lower temperature than the clearing temperature and quenched to room temperature. This procedure afforded a film maintaining optical anisotropy at room temperature, implying that a frozen LC structure is maintained at room temperature. The quenched film also resulted in a significantly enhanced thermal conductivity (lambda = 0.60 W m(-1) K-1) without the aid of fillers and external fields, unlike the as-cast counterpart without optical anisotropy. A polyacrylate containing a flexible long alkylene (C-6) spacer between the main chains and a BO-containing mesogenic side group was also investigated. The polyacrylate exhibited LC behavior during the heating and cooling processes over wide ranges. The polyacrylate film quenched from an established temperature, which contains a frozen LC structure, also exhibited a significantly enhanced lambda value (0.63 W m(-1) K-1) without fillers and external fields. Thus, the BO-containing vinyl polymers studied in this work are promising candidates for novel heat-releasing materials. (c) 2020 Society of Chemical Industry

A novel 2-(Z,E-1,2-diferrocenylvinyl)arenooxazoles 4a-f and 5a-e (24-32%, 2:1, respectively), 3-ferrocenyl-2-ferrocenylmethyl-2-morpholino-2H-areno[1,4]oxazines 7a-f (22-33%), 2′,3′-diferrocenyl-3H-spirolareno[d]oxazole-2,1′-cycloprop[2]ene] 6-f (5-6%), 2-ferrocenylarenooxazoles 3a-e (4-6%), and 3,4-diferrocenyl-8-hydroxyquinolines 8d-f (ca-25-30%) are described by reactions of 2,3-diferrocenyl-1-morpholino-cyclopropenium salts 1 with 1,2-aminophenols 2a-e and 2,3-aminonaphthol 2f in the presence of Et3N is described. A new reaction of transformation of the intermediate products of the addition of 1,2-aminoarenols 2a-f to the diferrocenyl-cyclopropenium cation 1 in the positions C(1) and C(2) is found. The characterization of the new compounds was done by IR, H-1- and C-13-NMR spectroscopy, mass-spectrometry, elemental analysis, and X-ray diffraction.
