An operationally simple method for synthesis of benzimidazole and 3H-imidazo[4,5-c]pyridine from o-phenylenediamine or pyridine-3, 4-diamine and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) in the presence of hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) as a reagent is described. This reaction complies with the principles of green chemistry as it does not use toxic solvents, transition metals, or strong acids. The products are obtained in moderate to excellent yields.

Adenylate-forming enzymes (AFEs) are a mechanistic superfamily of proteins that are involved in many cellular roles. In the biosynthesis of benzoxazole antibiotics, an AFE has been reported to play a key role in the condensation of cyclic molecules. In the biosynthetic gene cluster for the benzoxazole AJI9561, AjiA1 catalyzes the condensation of two 3-hydroxyanthranilic acid (3-HAA) molecules using ATP as a co-substrate. Here, the enzymatic activity of AjiA1 is reported together with a structural analysis of its apo form. The structure of AjiA1 was solved at 2.0 angstrom resolution and shows a conserved fold with other AFE family members. AjiA1 exhibits activity in the presence of 3-HAA (K-m = 77.86 +/- 28.36, k(cat) = 0.04 +/- 0.004) and also with the alternative substrate 3-hydroxybenzoic acid (3-HBA; K-m = 22.12 +/- 31.35, k(cat) = 0.08 +/- 0.005). The structure of AjiA1 in the apo form also reveals crucial conformational changes that occur during the catalytic cycle of this enzyme which have not been described for any other AFE member. Consequently, the results shown here provide insights into this protein family and a new subgroup is proposed for enzymes that are involved in benzoxazole-ring formation.

In the present work, the synthesis and characterization of a novel binuclear oxo-bridged iron(III) complex, (FeLAPIP)(2)O, where L-APIP is the deprotonated form of a tetradentateo-aminophenol-iminopyridine ligand, is described. The iron complex was characterized using different techniques including X-ray crystallography, infrared spectroscopy, UV-Vis, magnetic susceptibility and cyclic voltammetry. The X-ray structure analysis revealed that in the structure of the (FeLAPIP)(2)O complex, each iron(III) is coordinated in a distorted square pyramidal arrangement by an oxo group, three amine nitrogens and one oxygen atom of the o-aminophenolate ligand. The variable-temperature magnetic measurement exhibits strong antiferromagnetic coupling between two iron(III) centers. Cyclic voltammetry measurements showed two kinds of quasireversible events, suggesting the formation of a phenoxyl radical species in the region of the anodic peaks and a metal-centered redox (Fe-III/Fe-II) process at low potential. The catalytic activity of this Fe-complex was evaluated in coupling of 2-aminophenol and benzyl alcohols for the one-pot synthesis of benzoxazoles. The catalyst system showed high catalytic activity in this transformation and benzoxazole derivatives were obtained in good to excellent yields. tert-Butyl hydroperoxide was used as an oxidant and 1.2 mol% of catalyst was needed to accomplish the reaction in water as the green solvent.

Development of newer methods for the synthesis of Benzoxazoles has of greater interest due to their wide range of biological activities and pharmaceutical importance. We herein report a facile and general method for the synthesis of 2-substituted Benzoxazoles via copper catalyzed intramolecular C-O cross-coupling of 2-haloanilides. A combination of CuI (5 mol%), 2,2′-bipyridine (10 mol%), Cs2CO3 (2 equiv.) in DMF solvent with 4 angstrom molecular sieves at 140 degrees C, illustrated the scope for tuning the reactivity of 2-haloanilides toward the selective formation of a series of 2-alkyl benzoxazole derivatives in moderate to good yields. This is the first systematic study using CuI/2,2′-Bipyridine as the catalytic system for the synthesis of 2-substituted Benzoxazoles. The outcome of the reaction was found to be significantly influenced by the aromatic and amide substituents of 2-haloanilides. [GRAPHICS]

The electronic properties of quercetin (Q)-pi-cyanoacrylic acid (CNA) dye molecules using heteroaromatic rings, namely cyclopentadiene (F1), furan (F2), pyrrole (F3), thiophene (F4), oxazole (F5), imidazole (F6), thiazole (F7), isoindene (FF1), benzofuran (FF2), indole (FF3), benzothiophene (FF4), benzoxazole (FF5), benzimidazole (FF6), and benzothiazole (FF7), as pi-linkers are studied for the first time using Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TDDFT) with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as solvent to predict their excitation energy, absorption wavelength, oscillator strength, light harvesting efficiency, and exciton binding energy. The charge transfer and charge regeneration in the ground and excited states of the dyes are established. The photon to electron energy transfer from the dye (quercetin) to the semiconductor (TiO2) surface is analyzed based on intramolecular charge transfer. The results of the electron transfer studies on these newly designed dyes could be used to enhance the performance of resulting dye-sensitized solar cells.
