Symmetrical and unsymmetrical biaryls comprises a diverse class of biologically eloquent organic compounds. We herein report, a quick and eco-friendly protocol for the synthesis of biaryls by an oxidative (aerobic) homocoupling of arylboronic acids (ABAs) using Pd(OAc)(2) in water extract of pomogranate ash (WEPA) as an efficient agro-waste(bio)-derived aqueous (basic) media. The reactions were executed at ambient aerobic conditions in the absence of external base and ligand to result symmetrical biaryls in excellent yields. The use of renewable media with an effective exploitation of waste, short reaction times, excellent yields of products, easy separation of the products, unnecessating the external base, oxidant, ligand or volatile organic solvents and ambient reaction conditions are the vital insights of the present protocol.

The synthesis of 7-conjugated organic materials through C-H activation and functionalization has recently received increasing attention. In this work, four pyrid-2-yl-appended para-phenylene oligomers (1-4) with two to five phenyl repeating units were synthesized via the Ru-catalyzed C-H activation of 2-phenylpyridine, followed by oxidative homocoupling or the arylation with a para-phenylene dibromide substrate. The single-crystal X-ray data and crystal packing of 1 and 3 are presented. In response to acid stimuli, the blue emissions of 1-3 are replaced by red-shifted cyan emissions, which are associated with the charge transfer transition from the phenylene backbone to the protonated pyridinium units. However, the emission of the longest congener 4 is largely quenched upon protonation. This lengthdependent emission property is rationalized by DFT and TDDFT calculations. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Aryllithiums are one of the most common and important aryl nucleophiles; nevertheless, methods for arylation of aryllithums to produce biaryls have been limited. Herein, we report arylation of aryllithiums with S-arylphenothiazinium ions through selective ligand coupling of intermediary sulfuranes. Various unsymmetrical biaryls could be obtained without transition-metal catalysis.

Many interesting target guest molecules have low symmetry, yet most methods for synthesising hosts result in highly symmetrical capsules. Methods of generating lower symmetry pores are thus required to maximise the binding affinity in host-guest complexes. Herein, we use mixtures of tetraaldehyde building blocks with cyclohexanediamine to access low-symmetry imine cages. Whether a low-energy cage is isolated can be correctly predicted from the thermodynamic preference observed in computational models. The stability of the observed structures depends on the geometrical match of the aldehyde building blocks. One bent aldehyde stands out as unable to assemble into high-symmetry cages-and the same aldehyde generates low-symmetry socially self-sorted cages when combined with a linear aldehyde. We exploit this finding to synthesise a family of low-symmetry cages containing heteroatoms, illustrating that pores of varying geometries and surface chemistries may be reliably accessed through computational prediction and self-sorting.

Four dinuclear organotin halides of composition XnPh(3-n)SnCH2Si(Me)(2)-C12H8-Si(Me)(2)CH2-SnPh(3-n)Xn (X = Cl, I; n = 1, 2) were prepared and combined in 1:1 stoichiometric reactions with potassium 2,5-pyridinedicarboxylate, 3,5-pyridinedicarboxylate, and piperazine bis-dithiocarbamate, respectively. The reactions yielded a total of five [1 + 1] aggregates with either 21- or 22-membered macrocyclic structures that were fully characterized by elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, IR and NMR (H-1, C-13, Si-29, and Sn-119) spectroscopy, and, in three cases, additionally by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In solution, the macrocycles exhibit conformational and configurational equilibria being fast on the NMR time scale, which, for one of the macrocycles, were closer examined by variable temperature NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations.

Novel gemini (tail-head-spacer-head-tail) bis-quaternary ammonium compounds (bis-QACs) with a biphenyl spacer between two pyridinium heads were synthesized and compared with commonly used antiseptics such as benzalkonium chloride (BAC) and chlorhexidine digluconate (CHG). The series of compounds showed high inhibitory activity against five bacterial strains and two fungi. The compounds, which contain C8H17-C10H21 aliphatic tails best within the series. A counterion change does not affect MIC in general. Cytotoxicity on human embryonic kidney cells and haemolysis were also investigated. For bis-QACs cytotoxic effect was lower than for 3,3 ‘-[1,4-phenylenebis(oxy)]bis(1-dodecylpyridinium) dibromide (3PHBO-12), that is their closest structural analogue, and for BAC.

Two branched oligophenylenethynylenes with phenylene or biphenylene moieties as inter-nodal fragments are synthesized by the Sonogashira reaction for optoelectronic applications. The branching of polyphenylenethynylenes influences the electro-optical properties, but cannot be precisely controlled, while its determination is often hardly addressed. The optical investigation, supported by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies, of oligophenylenethynylenes and the properly synthesized model compounds is performed to get insights on the branching and related effect on the material performance. The proposed branched oligophenylenethynylenes are good ultraviolet emitters in solution, while in solid-state aggregation phenomena strongly affect emission properties. However, the interactions between pi-electrons on phenylene and ethynylene of neighboring molecules in films enhance intermolecular charge transport (hole mobility = 3.2 x 10(-3) cm(2) V(-1)s(-1)) making them optimal candidates as hole transport materials in optoelectronic devices. The insertion of the oligophenylenethynylene film as a hole transporting layer in multilayered solution processes blue, green, and red electroluminescent diodes, enhances OLEDs electro-optical properties.

Here, we present the use of mini-emulsion polymerization to generate small particle analogues of three insoluble conjugated polymer photocatalysts. These materials show hydrogen evolution rates with a sacrificial donor under broadband illumination that are between two and three times higher than the corresponding bulk polymers. The most active emulsion particles displayed a hydrogen evolution rate of 60.6mmol h(-1) g(-1) under visible light (lambda > 420 nm), which is the highest reported rate for an organic polymer. More importantly, the emulsion particles display far better catalytic lifetimes than previous polymer nanoparticles and they are also effective at high concentrations, allowing external quantum efficiencies as high as 20.4% at 420 nm. A limited degree of aggregation of the polymer particles maximizes the photocatalytic activity, possibly because of light scattering and enhanced light absorption.

Polyelectrolytes play an important role in both natural biological systems and human society, and their synthesis, functional exploration, and profound application are thus essential for biomimicry and creating new materials. In this study, we developed an efficient synthetic methodology for in situ generation of azonia-containing polyelectrolytes in a one-pot manner by using readily accessible nonionic reactant in the presence of commercially available cheap ionic species. The resulting polyelectrolytes are emissive in the solid state and can readily form luminescent photopatterns with different colors. The azonia-containing polyelectrolytes possess extraordinary potency of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, enabling them to impressively kill methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a drug resistant superbug, both in vitro and in vivo.

In this study, synthesis, characterization and photocatalytic performance of surface-modified TiO2 nanoparticles with ascorbic acid-stabilized Pd nanoparticles are presented. The structure, composition and morphology of as-prepared nanophotocatalyst were characterized by UV-DRS, FT-IR, ICP-AES, TEM and XPS analysis. Ascorbic acid-stabilized Pd nanoparticles induced visible light driven photocatalytic property on the surface of TiO2 which are otherwise insensitive to visible light owing to the wide band gap. The catalytic system worked well for the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling and Ullmann homocoupling under compact fluorescent light as a visible source with significant activity, selectivity and recyclability. Good to excellent yields of biaryl products were obtained for various aryl halides having different electronic demands and even aryl chlorides. Our results proposed that the improved photoactivity predominantly benefits from the synergistic effects of ascorbic acid-stabilized Pd nanoparticles on TiO2 nanoparticles that cause efficient separation and photoexcited charge carriers and photoredox capability of nanocatalyst. Thus, tuning of band gap of TiO2 making a visible light sensitive photocatalyst, demonstrates a significant advancement in the photocatalytic Suzuki-Miyaura and Ullmann coupling reactions.
