A catalyst- and metal-free electrochemical hydrodehalogenation of aryl halides is disclosed. Our reaction by a flexible protocol is operated in an undivided cell equipped with an inexpensive graphite rod anode and cathode. Trialkylamines nBu(3)N/Et3N behave as effective reductants and hydrogen atom donors for this electrochemical reductive reaction. Various aryl and heteroaryl bromides worked effectively. The typically less reactive aryl chlorides and fluorides can also be smoothly converted. The utility of our method is demonstrated by detoxification of harmful pesticides and hydrodebromination of a dibrominated biphenyl (analogues of flame-retardants) in gram scale.

I found the field of Chemistry very interesting. The development of novel multi-substituted aryl-phosphonate compounds offers promise as new building blocks for metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials with excellent properties in regards to porosity and gas sorption. We demonstrate the efficiency of the palladium-catalyzed Hirao cross-coupling reaction in the synthesis of substituted phosphonates; however, attempts to prepare derivatives with isoretical expansion through the cyclization of 4-(4?-bromophenyl)acetophenone resulted in an extremely low yield, with the isolation of the dimer intermediate. Ab initio calculations showed that while the trimerization of acetophenone is exothermic, that of 4-phenyl acetophenone is endothermic. By contrast, the cyclization of 4-(4?-bromophenyl)benzonitrile is exothermic and allows for the formation of the appropriate phosphonic acid. The benzonitrile methodology also allows for the formation of ortho methyl derivatives with high steric hindrance. All the multi-substituted aryl-phosphonate compounds reported herein can be prepared on a multi gram scale enabling researchers a wider range of building blocks for phosphonate MOFs.

Facile polymerization reaction conditions were developed for synthesizing conjugated polymers via direct arylation and the Buchwald-Hartwig aryl amination reactions under aerobic conditions. Refluxing the reaction solvent and using XPhos Pd G2 as a precatalyst proved to be a tolerant polymerization protocol for direct arylation polycondensation, which eliminates the need for an inert gas atmosphere and can successfully proceed using commercially available, reagent-grade N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as the solvent. This strategy was also successfully applied to the Buchwald-Hartwig aryl amination polycondensation in toluene, which provided poly(triarylamine)s in air.

The reversible transformation of multicomponent nanorotors (ROT-1,k(298)= 44 kHz orROT-2,k(298)= 61 kHz) to the dimeric supramolecular structures (DS-1orDS-2,k(298)= 0.60 kHz) was triggered by a stoichiometric chemical stimulus. Simple coordination changes at the central phenanthroline of the molecular device by altering metal ions (Cu+-> Zn2+) or stoichiometry (Cu+, 1 equiv. -> 0.5 equiv.) affected the terminal zinc(ii) porphyrin units, the active sites within the machinery, changing rotational, catalytic and optical properties. In presence of added pyrrolidine, the nanorotorROT-1was inactive for catalysis whereas formation of the dimeric supramolecular structuresDS-1initiated a Michael addition reaction by releasing the organocatalyst from the porphyrin sites. This catalytic machinery (ROT-1 reversible arrow DS-1) proved to reproducibly work over two full cycles using allosteric OFF/ON control of catalysis.

The space integration of the lithiation of aryl halides, the borylation of aryllithiums, and Suzuki-Miyaura coupling using a Pd catalyst supported by a polymer monolith flow reactor without using an intentionally added base was achieved. To scale up the process, a series connection of the monolith Pd reactor was examined. To suppress the increase in the pressure drop caused by the series connection, a monolith reactor having larger pore sizes was developed by varying the temperature of the monolith preparation. The monolithic Pd reactor having larger pore sizes enabled Suzuki-Miyaura coupling at a higher flow rate because of a lower pressure drop and, therefore, an increase in productivity. The present study indicates that series connection of the reactors with a higher flow rate serves as a good method for increasing the productivity without decreasing the yields.

Novel palladium-doped nanoparticles have been explored to serve as the first metal oxide-derived heterogeneous catalyst for Ullmann reaction of chloroarenes under mild condition (34 degrees C). This heterogeneous catalyst exhibited high catalytic activity towards the Ullmann homocoupling of chloroarenes into a series of useful symmetrically biaryl products with good to excellent yields in the presence of ethanol and NaOH, thereby leading to green and economical Ullmann reaction. The produced nanoparticles were successfully characterized by various techniques including PXRD, XPS, HRTEM, SEM-EDS, BET, TGA techniques, elemental mapping analysis and ICP-OES. Interestingly, based on characterization and experimental data, a reasonable mechanism has been proposed. Also, the formation of aryl methyl ketone as a by-product has been further confirmed by isotopic labelling experiments that the acetyl moiety is derived from ethanol. Moreover, the catalyst was stable and could be easily reused up to 5 times under atmospheric air without suffering significant loss in catalytic activity.

The synthesis of different pi-spacered thiophene comonomers via Suzuki cross-coupling in good synthetic yields was accomplished. Potentiodynamic electropolymerization of these precursors on ITO electrode by constant potential electrolysis results in the deposition of thin films of polymers between 0.05 and 0.2 mu M. Interestingly, the as synthesized pi-conjugated polymers exhibit electrochromic behaviour upon electrochemical oxidation. On the application side, the synthesized electropolymers showed catalytic activity better than glassy carbon towards electrochemical reduction of nitrobenzene.

A series of phosphonate ester supported lanthanide complexes bearing functionalities for subsequent immobilisation on semiconductor surfaces are prepared. Six phosphonate ester ligands (L1-L6) with varying aromatic residues are synthesised. Subsequent complexation with lanthanide chloride or -nitrate precursors (Ln = La, Nd, Dy, Er) affords the corresponding mono- or dimeric lanthanide model complexes [LnX(3)(L1-L3 or L5-L6)(3)](n) (X = NO3, Cl; n = 1 (Nd, Dy, Er), 2 (La, Nd)) or [LnCl(2)Br(L4-Br)(2)(L4-Cl)](n) (n = 1 (Nd, Dy, Er), 2 (La, Nd)) (1-32). In this work, polymers comprising of the different ratios of N-decyl or N-triethylene glycol substituted 2,7-carbazoles and tetraphenylethenes were designed and synthesized by palladium-catalyzed Suzuki Miyaura cross coupling reaction of their corresponding comonomers. The copolymers containing carbazoles and tetraphenylethenes showed aggregation induced emission characteristics in both solid state and aggregate state when the composition of the tetraphenylethenes reached to 50%. N-triethylene glycol substituted carbazole polymers revealed lower bandgap and higher HOMO level compared to that of the N-decyl substituted carbazole polymers. The higher composition of the tetraphenylethenes, the deeper HOMO level and the larger bandgap of the polymers. Polymers with 1:1 molar ratio of the carbazoles and the tetraphenylethenes exhibited sphere-like nanoparticles with an average diameter of around 30 nm. The polymers containing carbazole and TPE units in 3:1 or 1:3 molar ratio self-assembled to form nanoaggregates with a size of around 100 nm.
