A palladium catalysed Ullmann biaryl synthesis has been developed using hydrazine hydrate as the reducing reagent at room temperature. The combination of Pd(OAc)(2) and hydrazine hydrate works smoothly for the coupling of both electron-rich and electron-deficient aryl iodides, as well as hetero-aryl iodides, leading to a wide range of biaryls in good to excellent yields. The reaction requires only 1 mol% Pd(OAc)(2) and the in situ generated palladium naoparticles are found to be active catalysts.

The synthesis of different pi-spacered thiophene comonomers via Suzuki cross-coupling in good synthetic yields was accomplished. Potentiodynamic electropolymerization of these precursors on ITO electrode by constant potential electrolysis results in the deposition of thin films of polymers between 0.05 and 0.2 mu M. Interestingly, the as synthesized pi-conjugated polymers exhibit electrochromic behaviour upon electrochemical oxidation. On the application side, the synthesized electropolymers showed catalytic activity better than glassy carbon towards electrochemical reduction of nitrobenzene.

In the course of studying silicon modifications to improve emission properties of commonly used organic compounds, biphenyl with dimethylsilylvinyl groups in the para position (3-Si) was investigated. A comparative study was performed on the exact C-analogue (3-C) and expanded to biphenyl and dimethylbiphenyl to emphasize the general trend observed. Compound 3-Si displayed emission properties clearly different than all of the investigated hydrocarbon compounds, i.e. twice stronger fluorescence (phi(f) = 0.6) and a 3-times larger radiative rate constant as compared to 3-C in acetonitrile. Searching for the source of the unique emission of 3-Si, singlet and triplet processes were investigated for all of the compounds using steady-state and time-resolved methods, and their principal photophysical parameters are reported. Experimental work was supported by the theoretical predictions obtained using the EOM-CCSD method. The results led to the conclusion that the strong emission of 3-Si must be due to silicon’s presence that enhanced intensity borrowing from the strongly allowed S0 -> S2 transition and the larger S1 -> S0 transition moment.

Traditionally, electrochromic materials rely on counter redox materials like ferrocene to realize redox processes. In this work, two novel, closely related series of electrochromic materials bearing push-pull electronic structure were designed and synthesised (N,N,N’,N’-tetra(pyridin-4-yl)-1,4-phenylenediamine derivatives (TPPDs) and N,N,N ‘,N ‘-tetra(pyridin-4-yl)benzidine derivatives (TPBDs)). When stimulated by an external electric field, both series of compounds exhibited intramolecular charge transfer because of their push-pull electronic structures. Therefore, the TPPDs and TPBDs could undergo redox processes without the assistance of counter electrode chemicals. Furthermore, the TPPDs and TPBDs could replace the electrolyte that is required in conventional electrochromic devices (ECDs) because of their conductivity. This allowed the fabrication of a simple, single-component ECD.

Symmetrical and unsymmetrical biaryls comprises a diverse class of biologically eloquent organic compounds. We herein report, a quick and eco-friendly protocol for the synthesis of biaryls by an oxidative (aerobic) homocoupling of arylboronic acids (ABAs) using Pd(OAc)(2) in water extract of pomogranate ash (WEPA) as an efficient agro-waste(bio)-derived aqueous (basic) media. The reactions were executed at ambient aerobic conditions in the absence of external base and ligand to result symmetrical biaryls in excellent yields. The use of renewable media with an effective exploitation of waste, short reaction times, excellent yields of products, easy separation of the products, unnecessating the external base, oxidant, ligand or volatile organic solvents and ambient reaction conditions are the vital insights of the present protocol.

A photochemical C-N coupling of aryl halides with nitroarenes is demonstrated for the first time. Catalyzed by a Ni-II complex in the absence of any external photosensitizer, readily available nitroarenes undergo coupling with a variety of aryl halides, providing a step-economic extension to the widely used Buchwald-Hartwig C-N coupling reaction. The method tolerates coupling partners with steric-congestion and functional groups sensitive to bases and nucleophiles. Mechanistic studies suggest that the reaction proceeds via the addition of an aryl radical, generated from a Ni-I/Ni-III cycle, to a nitrosoarene intermediate.

A series of aryl-extended N-monoalkyl-4,4 ‘-bipyridinium salts L (aryl=1,4-phenyl, 4,4 ‘-biphenyl, 2,6-naphthyl and 9,10-anthracenyl) have been implemented by Pd-II/Pt-II-directed self-assembly into constitutionally dynamic systems (CDSs). As a result, the intended processes produced not only (en)M2L2 (en=ethylenediamine) metallacyclic species but also (en)M4L4 ring-in-ring aggregates, in equilibrium with the former, as a consequence of the hydrophobic nature of the aryl rings within the 4,4 ‘-bipyridinium scaffold. The key feature of the obtained dynamic systems is the possibility of modulating their response against external stimuli by modifying the hydrophobic character of the ligand. While the different dynamic libraries follow the same trends upon changes in concentration, temperature, polarity of the medium, or addition of an aromatic chemical effector, subtle changes in the ligand hydrophobic core results in a fine-tuning of the speciation when applying a certain degree of the different stimulus. The exception is the anthracene-containing derivative, which does not form inclusion complexes or self-threaded structures.

A deep-blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitter TXADO-spiro-DMACF has been reported for nondoped organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) by integrating an appropriate blocking unit with the donor (D)-acceptor (A)-donor (D)-type TADF emitter via a spiro linkage. Benefiting from the characteristic perpendicular arrangement, the intermolecular interactions are expected to be weakened to some degree. As a result, TXADO-spiro-DMACF shows a very small bathochromic shift of 8 nm associated with a narrowed full width at half maximum of 54 nm on going from solution to the film. The corresponding nondoped device successfully achieves a bright deep-blue emission, revealing Commission Internationale de l’Eclairage coordinates of (0.16, 0.09) and a peak external quantum efficiency of 5.3% (5.3 cd/A, 5.9 lm/W). The results clearly indicate that spiro-blocking is a promising strategy to develop deep-blue TADF emitters capable of nondoped OLEDs.

Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) synthesised in different solvents give different surface areas dependent on the solvent choice. No one solvent results in a high surface area across a range of different CMP materials. Here, we present an investigation into how the porosity of CMPs is affected by solvent polarity. It is seen that the trends differ depending on the respective monomer dipole moments and whether hydrogen bonding groups are present in the monomers and are able to interact with the respective solventviahydrogen bonding. It is believed that this methodology could be used to influence future materials design of both structure and synthesis strategy.

Methyl formate was produced in one pot through the hydrogenation of CO2 to formic acid/formate followed by an esterification step. The route offers the possibility to integrate renewable energy into the fossil-based chemical value chain. In this work, a phosphine-polymer-anchored Ru complex was shown to be an efficient solid catalyst for the direct hydrogenation of CO2 to methyl formate. The 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane-like polymer presented the highest activity with a turnover number (TON) of up to 3401 at 160 degrees C. The reaction parameters were systemically investigated to optimize the reaction towards the formation of methyl formate. This catalyst could be reused seven times without a significant decrease in activity. Evolution of the catalytic Ru center during the reaction was revealed, and a possible reaction mechanism was proposed.
