Herein, we report a Ni-catalyzed reductive coupling for the synthesis of benzonitriles from aryl (pseudo)halides and an electrophilic cyanating reagent, 2-methyl-2-phenyl malononitrile (MPMN). MPMN is a bench-stable, carbon-bound electrophilic CN reagent that does not release cyanide under the reaction conditions. A variety of medicinally relevant benzonitriles can be made in good yields. Addition of NaBr to the reaction mixture allows for the use of more challenging aryl electrophiles such as aryl chlorides, tosylates, and triflates. Mechanistic investigations suggest that NaBr plays a role in facilitating oxidative addition with these substrates.

A copper-catalyzed iodination of carbazoles has been developed. Barluenga’s reagent IPy2BF4 is used to generate a soft electrophilic halonium species for the iodination of the carbazoles. This report represents the first concept of copper-catalyst-promoted electrophilic halogenation of carbazoles. We demonstrated numerous applications of this methodology synthesizing diverse carbazole derivatives, i.e., both electron-rich and electron-deficient systems.

Reported here is a molecule-Lego synthetic strategy for macrocycles with functional skeletons, involving one-pot and high-yielding condensation between bis(2,4-dimethoxyphenyl)arene monomers and paraformaldehyde. By changing the blocks, variously functional units (naphthalene, pyrene, anthraquinone, porphyrin, etc.) can be conveniently introduced into the backbone of macrocycles. Interestingly, the macrocyclization can be tuned by the geometrical configuration of monomeric blocks. Linear (180 degrees) monomer yield cyclic trimers and pentamers, while V-shaped (120 degrees, 90 degrees and 60 degrees) monomers tend to form dimers. More significantly, even heterogeneous macrocycles are obtained in moderate yield by co-oligomerization of different monomers. This series of macrocycles have the potential to be prosperous in the near future.

Multiple studies have explored using cage silsesquioxanes (SQs) as backbone elements in hybrid polymers motivated by their well-defined structures and physical and mechanical properties. As part of this general exploration, we report unexpected photophysical properties of copolymers derived from divinyl double decker (DD) SQs, [vinyl(Me)Si(O-0.5)(2)][PhSiO1.5](8)[(O-0.5)(2)Si(Me)vinyl] (vinylDDvinyl). These copolymers exhibit strong emission red-shifts relative to model compounds, implying unconventional conjugation, despite vinyl(Me)Si(O-)(2) siloxane bridges. In an effort to identify minimum SQ structures that do/do not offer extended conjugation, we explored Heck catalyzed co-polymerization of vinyl-ladder(LL)-vinyl compounds, vinyl(Me/Ph)Si(O-0.5)(2)[PhSiO1.5](4)(O-0.5)(2)Si(Me/Ph)vinyl, with Br-Ar-Br. Most surprising, the resulting oligomers show 30-60 nm emission red-shifts beyond those seen with vinylDDvinyl analogs despite lacking a true cage. Further evidence for unconventional conjugation includes apparent integer charge transfer (ICT) between LL-co-thiophene, bithiophene, and thienothiophene with 10 mol % F(4)TCNQ, suggesting potential as p-type doped organic/inorganic semiconductors.

Main observation and conclusion Two bis-imidazolium salts LH2 center dot Cl-2 and LH2 center dot(PF6)(2) with acylated piperazine linker and two N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) silver(I) and palladium(II) complexes [L2Ag2](PF6)(2) (1) and [L2Pd2Cl4] (2) were prepared. The crystal structures of LH2 center dot Cl-2 and 1 were confirmed by X-ray analysis. In 1, one 26-membered macrometallocycle was generated through two silver(I) ions and two bidentate ligands L. The catalytic activity of 2 was investigated in Sonogashira, Heck-Mizoroki and Suzuki-Miyaura reactions. The results displayed that these C-C coupling reactions can be smoothly carried out under the catalysis of 2.

Transition metal catalyzed [3 + 2] annulation of imines with double bonds via directed C-H activation offers a direct access to amino cyclic motifs. However, owing to weak coordination and steric hindrance, trifluoromethylated ketimines have been an unaddressed challenge for TM-catalyzed annulations. Here, a rhenium-catalyzed [3 + 2] annulation of trifluoromethylated ketimines with isocyanates via C(sp(2))-H activation has been disclosed. This approach provides an efficient platform for rapid access to a privileged library of CF3-containing iminoisoindolinones and polyamides by utilizing challenging CF3-ketimines as the annulation component. The capability of gram scale synthesis, the post-functionalization of the cyclization adduct, the derivation of complex natural molecules and the facile synthesis of polyamides highlight a diversity of synthetic potential of the current methodology.

The space integration of the lithiation of aryl halides, the borylation of aryllithiums, and Suzuki-Miyaura coupling using a Pd catalyst supported by a polymer monolith flow reactor without using an intentionally added base was achieved. To scale up the process, a series connection of the monolith Pd reactor was examined. To suppress the increase in the pressure drop caused by the series connection, a monolith reactor having larger pore sizes was developed by varying the temperature of the monolith preparation. The monolithic Pd reactor having larger pore sizes enabled Suzuki-Miyaura coupling at a higher flow rate because of a lower pressure drop and, therefore, an increase in productivity. The present study indicates that series connection of the reactors with a higher flow rate serves as a good method for increasing the productivity without decreasing the yields.

Five novel triphenylamine derivatives with two silyl ether protecting groups were readily synthesized and further underwent silyl polycondensation to obtain novel electro-active aromatic polyethers. These polymers exhibited high optical transparency, were colourless, were soluble in many organic solvents, and had useful levels of thermal stability associated with moderately high glass-transition temperatures and char yields. These anodically polymeric electrochromic materials displayed highly reversible electrochemical and electrochromic behaviour, with interesting and useful multi-colour changes related to their different oxidation stages.

Airborne particulate matter (PM) has received increasing attention as it causes serious environmental pollution and huge health risk for humans. Herein, we demonstrate the synthesis of tubular conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) via a one-step cross-coupling reaction for the removal of PM from the air. Tubular CMPs possess a large specific surface area (>484 m(2) g(-1)), high physicochemical stability and mechanical flexibility and robustness. Benefiting from their abundant porosity, CMP-based filters show desirable ability for the capture of PM with a high efficiency of greater than 99% for both PM2.5 and PM10. In combination with their interestingly intrinsic hydrophobicity, a high filtration efficiency for PM2.5 greater than 99.97% can be obtained even under high-humidity conditions (relatively 96 +/- 2%), which can be maintained unchanged during a 12 h continuous test, making them highly advantageous over those hydrophilic filters that usually lose their filtration efficiency in a humid environment. Based on their simple fabrication, inherently hydrophobic wettability and high filtration efficiency, the as-synthesized CMP-based filters would hold great potential as promising filters for PM elimination in a humid environment under harsh conditions by taking the advantage of the intrinsically robust physicochemical properties of CMPs. More interestingly, due to the designable flexibility of CMPs, which makes it possible for fine-tuning their pore size or chemical composition, the tailored-design of advanced CMP-based filters for a specific purpose could be anticipated only by rationally varying the size or structure of their building blocks.
