The valency (connectivity) of building units in covalent organic frameworks (COFs) has been primarily 3 and 4, corresponding to triangles and squares or tetrahedrons, respectively. We report a strategy for making COFs with valency 8 (cubes) and infinity (rods). The linker 1,4-boronophenylphosphonic acid-designed to have boron and phosphorus as an isoelectronic combination of carbon-group elements-was condensed into a porous, polycubane structure (BP-COF-1) formulated as (-B4P4O12-)(-C6H4-)4. It was characterized by x-ray powder diffraction techniques, which revealed cubes linked with phenyls. The isoreticular forms (BP-COF-2 to 5) were similarly prepared and characterized. Large single crystals of a constitutionally isomeric COF (BP-COF-6), composed of rod units, were also synthesized using the same strategy, thus propelling COF chemistry into a new valency regime.

Here, we present the use of mini-emulsion polymerization to generate small particle analogues of three insoluble conjugated polymer photocatalysts. These materials show hydrogen evolution rates with a sacrificial donor under broadband illumination that are between two and three times higher than the corresponding bulk polymers. The most active emulsion particles displayed a hydrogen evolution rate of 60.6mmol h(-1) g(-1) under visible light (lambda > 420 nm), which is the highest reported rate for an organic polymer. More importantly, the emulsion particles display far better catalytic lifetimes than previous polymer nanoparticles and they are also effective at high concentrations, allowing external quantum efficiencies as high as 20.4% at 420 nm. A limited degree of aggregation of the polymer particles maximizes the photocatalytic activity, possibly because of light scattering and enhanced light absorption.

The fish bioconcentration factor (BCF) is an important aspect within bioaccumulation assessments. Several factors have been suggested to influence BCF values – including species, developmental stage, mixture exposure, and calculation method. However, their exact contribution to variance in BCF values is unknown. Within this study we assessed the relative impact of these test characteristics on BCF values and analyzed the reproducibility of aquatic exposure bioconcentration tests. Linear mixed effects analyses were performed on a newly develop database to investigate the relationship between the response variable (i.e. lipid normalized log BCF values) and several test characteristics as fixed effects. Lower BCF values were observed for substances that were simultaneously applied with high molecular weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons compared to single substance exposure (with an average difference of -0.81 log BCF). Also, lower BCFs upon kinetic determination were observed compared to steady-state BCFs (log BCF -0.27), and lower BCFs for species from the Ostariophysi subcohort level (log BCF -0.17 to -0.15). In addition, data analysis showed high variation within BCF values for single substances (average SD = log BCF 0.21), which questions the robustness of the current bioaccumulation assessments. For example, the 95% confidence range of a BCF value of 2500 ranges from 953 (‘not-bioaccumulative’) to 6561 (‘very bioaccumulative’). Our results show that the use of one single BCF leads to a high uncertainty in bioaccumulation assessments. We strongly recommend that within future bioconcentration studies, the used experimental design and test conditions are described in detail and justified to support solid interpretation. Base-induced decomposition (BID) of bicyclic dioxetanes bearing a 3-hydroxyphenyl substituted with 4-p-oligophenylene moiety proceeded rapidly to give bright light even in water as well as in acetonitrile or DMSO. Addition of beta-MCD (methylated beta-cyclodextrin) or TBHP (tributylhexadecylphosphonium bromide) to an aqueous system improved chemiluminescence efficiency of these dioxetanes. However, beta-MCD effected without sacrificing rate of BID, while TBHP considerably decreased the rate. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We report a new class of metal-organic framework (MOF) inks with a water-repellent, photocurable fluoropolyrner (PFPE) having up to 90 wt % MOF loading. These MOF inks are enabled to process various MOFs through spray coating, pen writing, stencil printing, and molding at room temperature. Upon UV curing, the hydrophobic PFPE matrix efficiently blocks water permeation but allows accessibility of chemicals into the MOF pores, thereby freeing the MOF to perform its unique function. Moreover, by introducing functional MOFs we successfully demonstrated a water-tolerant chemosensor for a class of aromatic pollutants in water and a chemical-resistant thermosensor for visualizing temperature image. This approach would open up innumerable opportunities for those MOFs that are otherwise dormant.

Herein, we report a Ni-catalyzed reductive coupling for the synthesis of benzonitriles from aryl (pseudo)halides and an electrophilic cyanating reagent, 2-methyl-2-phenyl malononitrile (MPMN). MPMN is a bench-stable, carbon-bound electrophilic CN reagent that does not release cyanide under the reaction conditions. A variety of medicinally relevant benzonitriles can be made in good yields. Addition of NaBr to the reaction mixture allows for the use of more challenging aryl electrophiles such as aryl chlorides, tosylates, and triflates. Mechanistic investigations suggest that NaBr plays a role in facilitating oxidative addition with these substrates.

A number of groups have invested considerable time synthesizing double-decker silsesquioxane (DD SQ) copolymers; however, to our knowledge, no one has sought to explore through-chain electronic communication between DD SQs via conjugated co-monomers. We recently demonstrated that stilbene derivatives of simple DD cages exhibit properties commensurate with formation of cage centered lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMOs), equivalent to LUMOs found in complete/incomplete SQ cages, [RStilbeneSiO(1.5)](8,10,12), [RStilbeneSiO(1.5)](7)[O1.5SiMe/nPr], [RStilbeneSiO(1.5)](7)[O0.5SiMe3](3), [RStilbeneSiO(1.5)](8)[O-0.5-SiMe3](4), and [RStilbeneSiO(1.5)](8)[OSiMe2](2). Such LUMOs support the existence of 3D excited-state conjugation in these cages. We describe here Heck catalyzed copolymerization of vinyl(Me)SiO(PhSiO1.5)(8)OSi(Me)vinyl (vinylDDvinyl) with X-Ar-X, where X = Br or I and X-Ar-X = 1,4-dihalobenzene, 4,4’dibromo-1,1′-biphenyl, 4,4 ”-dibromo-p-terphenyl, 4,4′-dibromo-trans-stilbene, 2,5-dibromothiophene, 5,5′-dibromo-2,2′-bithiophene, 2,5-dibromothieno[3,2-b]thiophene, and 2,7-dibromo-9,9-dimethylfluorene. Coincidentally model analogs were synthesized from vinylMeSi(OMe)(2). All compounds were characterized in detail by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time-of-flight, thermogravimetric analysis, nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transfer infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectrometry, and two-photon absorption (2PA) spectroscopy. Modeling of HOMO-LUMO energy levels of related compounds with R = Me rather than Ph was also explored. In the current systems, we again see apparent conjugation in excited states, as previously observed, as indicated by 50-120 nm red shifts in emission from the corresponding model silane compounds. These results suggest unexpected semiconducting behavior via vinylMeSi(O-)(2) (siloxane) bridges between DD cages in polymers. The thiophene, bithiophene, and thienothiophene copolymers display integer charge transfer behavior on doping with 10 mol % F(4)TCNQ supporting excited-state conjugation; suggesting potential as p-type, doped organic/inorganic semiconductors.

Poly(arylamine)s were synthesized by poly-condensation of 4-n-octylaniline with 4,4′-dibromobiphenyl using the Buchwald-Hartwig aryl amination. Both the NH and the Br end groups were properly modified upon addition of an end-capping reagent in an appropriate ratio. The synthesized polymers contained many impurities, such as Pd, Br, and Cl, which decrease organic light-emitting diode performance. An investigation to reduce the impurities in the polymer showed that the purification solvent plays the key role in reducing the concentration of impurities in the polymer; purification with a nonchlorinated solvent, anisole, provided a highly pure poly(arylamine) even with a simple purification procedure. Moreover, the highly purified polymer material improved carrier mobility in hole-only devices.

Traditionally, electrochromic materials rely on counter redox materials like ferrocene to realize redox processes. In this work, two novel, closely related series of electrochromic materials bearing push-pull electronic structure were designed and synthesised (N,N,N’,N’-tetra(pyridin-4-yl)-1,4-phenylenediamine derivatives (TPPDs) and N,N,N ‘,N ‘-tetra(pyridin-4-yl)benzidine derivatives (TPBDs)). When stimulated by an external electric field, both series of compounds exhibited intramolecular charge transfer because of their push-pull electronic structures. Therefore, the TPPDs and TPBDs could undergo redox processes without the assistance of counter electrode chemicals. Furthermore, the TPPDs and TPBDs could replace the electrolyte that is required in conventional electrochromic devices (ECDs) because of their conductivity. This allowed the fabrication of a simple, single-component ECD.
