A modular synthesis of multi-functionalized biphenyl, terphenyl and higher linear oligophenylene dicarboxylic acids and pyridine-terminated oligoarenes by stepwise palladium-catalyzed borylation/Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions is described. The presence of several distinct functional groups such as azide, hydroxy, and alkyne, as well as coordinative functional end groups (carboxylic acid or pyridine) combined in a single oligoarene molecular unit at strategic positions offer an advantageous dual-utility. First, these compounds can serve as useful molecular bricks (ditopic organic linkers) in the construction of complex porous crystalline materials. Second, after the assembly into the crystalline coordination networks, orthogonal functional sites within the linker-backbone offer tremendous potential from application perspectives as they can be modified by a wide range of post-synthetic modifications including azide-alkyne click chemistry. This allows further tailoring of the supramolecular assemblies to yield novel multifunctional materials.

A nickel-catalyzed cross-electrophile coupling reaction between (hetero)aryl bromides and 2,2-difluorovinyl tosylate is presented. In this study, the electrochromic behavior of benzonitrile compounds were investigated. For this, a series of benzonitrile compounds with different chemical structures were synthesized and their electrochemical properties were investigated by cyclic voltammetry. Electrochromic behavior of the benzonitrile derivatives were also investigated by constructing sandwich type electrochromic devices and recording the changes in the UV-vis spectra as a function of applied potential. The compounds exhibited excellent electrochromic properties such as a high optical contrast, low driving voltage, good switching stability, high coloration efficiency, and a fast response time. All five compounds had different colors (orange, yellow-green, reddish-brown, green, blue) and driving voltages that were highly dependent on their chemical structures. The results indicate that benzonitriles are good electrochromic materials and should be of interest for applications such as electrochromic smart windows, information displays, and optical storage devices.

Newly designed dimethylamine-substituted triphenylamine (TPA) derivatives, N,N’-(1,4-phenylene)bis(N-(4-((tert-butyldimethylsilyl)oxy)phenyl)-N ”,N ”-dimethylbenzene-1,4-diamine) (NTPPA-2Si) and N,N’4(1,1′-biphenyl)-4,4′-diyl)bis(N-(4-((tert-butyldimethylsilyl)oxy)pheny1)-N ”,N ”-dimethylbenzene-1,4-diamine) (NTPB-2Si), with silyl ether protecting groups were readily synthesized. Subsequently, novel electroactive aromatic poly(ether sulfone)s (PES), NTPPA-PES and NTPB-PES, could be obtained from silyl polycondensation. The PESs were readily soluble in commonly used laboratory organic solvents and could be solution-cast into tough and amorphous films with moderate levels of glass-transition temperature around 220 degrees C and thermal stability without significant weight loss up to 400 degrees C under nitrogen or air atmosphere. The Nernst equation method was used to explore the number of electrons transferred at each oxidation step of the targeted two monomers. Furthermore, these two anodic electrochromic PESs were introduced into electrochromic devices accompanied with cathodic heptyl viologen (HV), and the resulted devices demonstrated a high coloration contrast and excellent electrochemical stability. Using nanoscale building blocks to construct hierarchical materials is a radical new branch point in materials discovery that promises new structures and emergent functionality. Understanding the design principles that govern nanoparticle assembly is critical to moving this field forward. By exploiting mixed ligand environments to target patchy nanoparticle surfaces, we have demonstrated a novel method of colloidal quantum dot (QD) assembly that gives rise to 2D structures. The equilibration of solutions of spherical and quasi-spherical QDs, including CdS, CdSe, and InP, with 2,2′-bipyridine-5,5′-diacrylic acid resulted in the preferential formation of 2D assemblies over the course of days as determined by transmission electron microscopy analysis. Small-angle X-ray scattering confirms the existence of the QD assemblies in solution. The dependence of the assembly on linker properties (length and rigidity), linker concentration, and total concentration was investigated, together with the data point to a mechanism involving ligand redistribution to create a patchy surface that maximizes the steric repulsion of neighboring QDs. By operating in an underexchanged regime, the arising patchiness results in enthalpically preferred directions of cross-linking that can be accessed by thermal equilibration.

[n]Cycloparaphenylenes, or carbon nanohoops, are unique conjugated macrocycles with radially oriented pi-systems similar to those in carbon nanotubes. The centrosymmetric nature and conformational rigidity of these molecules lead to unusual size-dependent photophysical characteristics. To investigate these effects further and expand the family of possible structures, a new class of related carbon nanohoops with broken symmetry is disclosed. In these structures, referred to as meta[n]cycloparaphenylenes, a single carbon-carbon bond is shifted by one position in order to break the centrosymmetric nature of the parent [n]cycloparaphenylenes. Advantageously, the symmetry breaking leads to bright emission in the smaller nanohoops, which are typically non-fluorescent due to optical selection rules. Moreover, this simple structural manipulation retains one of the most unique features of the nanohoop structures-size dependent emissive properties with relatively large extinction coefficients and quantum yields. Inspired by earlier theoretical work by Tretiak and co-workers, this joint synthetic, photophysical, and theoretical study provides further design principles to manipulate the optical properties of this growing class of molecules with radially oriented pi-systems.

In this study, we prepared a magnetic metal-graphene nanocomposite for the synthesis of substituted biaryls via Suzuki cross coupling and homo coupling reaction of aryl halides. The magnetic few layer graphene composite was synthesized by using one-step electrochemical exfoliation of graphite foil in aqueous iron (II) ammonium sulfate as electrolyte without using of any additive or corrosive media. Then, Fe2O3@FLG composite was used an efficient support for the immobilization and suitable dispersing of palladium nanoparticles. The obtained Fe2O3@FLG@Pd-0 nanocomposite was characterized using FT-IR, SEM, TEM, EDS, XRD, VSM and ICP-AES analysis. Very low loading of this catalyst was displayed high activity in the producing substituted biaryls. It simply recovered from the reaction mixture and reused without any pre-activation in six consecutive runs with no loss of its catalytic activity or the observation of any detectable palladium leaching process. A catalyst- and metal-free electrochemical hydrodehalogenation of aryl halides is disclosed. Our reaction by a flexible protocol is operated in an undivided cell equipped with an inexpensive graphite rod anode and cathode. Trialkylamines nBu(3)N/Et3N behave as effective reductants and hydrogen atom donors for this electrochemical reductive reaction. Various aryl and heteroaryl bromides worked effectively. The typically less reactive aryl chlorides and fluorides can also be smoothly converted. The utility of our method is demonstrated by detoxification of harmful pesticides and hydrodebromination of a dibrominated biphenyl (analogues of flame-retardants) in gram scale.
