Newly designed dimethylamine-substituted triphenylamine (TPA) derivatives, N,N’-(1,4-phenylene)bis(N-(4-((tert-butyldimethylsilyl)oxy)phenyl)-N ”,N ”-dimethylbenzene-1,4-diamine) (NTPPA-2Si) and N,N’4(1,1′-biphenyl)-4,4′-diyl)bis(N-(4-((tert-butyldimethylsilyl)oxy)pheny1)-N ”,N ”-dimethylbenzene-1,4-diamine) (NTPB-2Si), with silyl ether protecting groups were readily synthesized. The PESs were readily soluble in commonly used laboratory organic solvents and could be solution-cast into tough and amorphous films with moderate levels of glass-transition temperature around 220 degrees C and thermal stability without significant weight loss up to 400 degrees C under nitrogen or air atmosphere. The Nernst equation method was used to explore the number of electrons transferred at each oxidation step of the targeted two monomers. Furthermore, these two anodic electrochromic PESs were introduced into electrochromic devices accompanied with cathodic heptyl viologen (HV), and the resulted devices demonstrated a high coloration contrast and excellent electrochemical stability. A side-chain-extended conjugation strategy is demonstrated here to improve the photocatalytic performance of a linear conjugated polymer for hydrogen production from water. For this, polymers P0, P1, and P2 were designed and synthesized based on benzodithiophene and dibenzothiophene S,S-dioxide. Compared with P0, P1 and P2 have two additional thiophene units conjugated in the polymer skeleton along the main-chain and side-chain directions, respectively. Studies found that side chain-conjugated functionalization in P2 enhances thermal stability, redshifts light-absorption bands, narrows the polymer bandgap, prolongs the exciton lifetime, enlarges the photocatalytic over-potential, increases charge mobility, reduces charge transport resistance, and thus improves the hydrogen evolution rate (HER) by a factor of 160 fold. Although performance improvement is still observed in P1, the factor is only 3.6 fold. Thus, P2 exhibits the most promising performance among the three polymers with a HER of 20 314 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) in the presence of 3 wt% Pt cocatalyst and a record apparent quantum yield of 7.04% at 500 nm, rendering it an excellent green light photocatalyst.

The present work demonstrates the operation of a reversible supramolecular gate, i.e., an ensemble of various components linked by chemical communication, which is triggered by stoichiometric chemical inputs and by obeying the AND truth table delivers a stoichiometric chemical signal. Three cost-effective D-pi-D hole transport materials (HTMs) with different pi-bridges, including biphenyl (SY1), phenanthrene (SY2), and pyrene (SY3), have been synthesized via a one-pot reaction with cheap commercially available starting materials for application in organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs). The effects of the various pi-bridges on the photophysical, electrochemical, and electrical properties, and film morphologies of the materials, as well as on the photovoltaic properties of the PSCs, have been systematically investigated accordingly. Our results clearly show that HTM-SY3 with pyrene as the pi-bridge exhibits higher hole mobility and better hole extraction/transport and film formation abilities than the other two HTMs. Devices that employed SY3 as the HTM show impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) values of 19.08% and 13.41% in (FAPbI(3))(0.85)(MAPbBr(3))(0.15)- and CsPbI2Br-based PSCs, respectively, which are higher than those of the reference HTM-SY1- and SY2-based ones. Our studies demonstrate a promising strategy to rationally design and synthesize low-cost and efficient HTMs through structural engineering for use in PSCs.

Ionic liquids bearing both liquid crystallinity and chirality are potentially applicable for chiral electrochemical syntheses and polymerizations. In this study, two types of chiral nematic liquid-crystalline ionic liquids (N*-LCILs) are developed to achieve asymmetric electrochemical polymerization without a supporting electrolyte and even a chiral dopant. N*-LCILs are prepared i) by adding an axially chiral binaphthyl derivative as an external chiral dopant to imidazolium cation-based LCILs or ii) by incorporating a chiral binaphthyl phosphate as a counter anion in LCILs. Helical poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (H-PEDOT) films are successfully synthesized through electrochemical polymerization of a dimer- or trimer-type 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) monomer in an N*-LCIL, where N*-LCIL plays the role of both an asymmetric solvent and a supporting electrolyte. H-PEDOT films have helically pi-stacked structures of conjugated chains and spiral morphologies consisting of one-handed screwed fibril bundles. The plausible mechanism of the asymmetric electrochemical polymerization of EDOT in N*-LCIL is proposed to elucidate the correlation of helical sense between the helically pi-stacked chains, screwed fibril bundles, and N*-LCIL. The two present types of N*-LCILs are the first to enable supporting electrolyte-free asymmetric electrochemical polymerization, and they have potential applications in various types of chiral electrochemical syntheses, expanding the potential utility of ionic liquids.

The fish bioconcentration factor (BCF) is an important aspect within bioaccumulation assessments. Several factors have been suggested to influence BCF values – including species, developmental stage, mixture exposure, and calculation method. However, their exact contribution to variance in BCF values is unknown. Within this study we assessed the relative impact of these test characteristics on BCF values and analyzed the reproducibility of aquatic exposure bioconcentration tests. Linear mixed effects analyses were performed on a newly develop database to investigate the relationship between the response variable (i.e. lipid normalized log BCF values) and several test characteristics as fixed effects. Lower BCF values were observed for substances that were simultaneously applied with high molecular weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons compared to single substance exposure (with an average difference of -0.81 log BCF). Also, lower BCFs upon kinetic determination were observed compared to steady-state BCFs (log BCF -0.27), and lower BCFs for species from the Ostariophysi subcohort level (log BCF -0.17 to -0.15). In addition, data analysis showed high variation within BCF values for single substances (average SD = log BCF 0.21), which questions the robustness of the current bioaccumulation assessments. For example, the 95% confidence range of a BCF value of 2500 ranges from 953 (‘not-bioaccumulative’) to 6561 (‘very bioaccumulative’). Our results show that the use of one single BCF leads to a high uncertainty in bioaccumulation assessments. We strongly recommend that within future bioconcentration studies, the used experimental design and test conditions are described in detail and justified to support solid interpretation. No one solvent results in a high surface area across a range of different CMP materials. Here, we present an investigation into how the porosity of CMPs is affected by solvent polarity. Two novel triphenylamine-based derivatives with dimethylamino substituents, N,N’-bis(4-dimethylaminophenyl)-N,N’-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-1,4-phenylenediamine (NTPPA) and N,N’-bis (4-dimethylaminophenyl)-N,N’-bis ( 4-methoxypheny1)-1,1′-biphenyl-4,4′-diamine (NTPB), were readily prepared for investigating the optical and electrochromic behaviors. An electroactive polytriphenylamine (PTPA-C6) is blended with poly(styrene-co-hydroxystyrene) (PS-co-PHS) as coating layers to enhance protection efficiency of PTPA-C6 on iron substrate in 3.5% sodium chloride (NaCl) solution. Experimental results show that incorporation of hydroxyl group to the polystyrene not only increases the miscibility of PTPA-C6 with PS through the hydrogen bond formation, but also enhances the bonding strength between the polymer coating layer and iron substrate. These improvements lead to superior enhancement in anticorrosion performance of PTPA-C6, even after thermal treatment. Protection efficiency (PE) of PTPA-C6 increases from 81.52% of the PTPA-C6 itself to over 94.40% under different conditions (PEmax = 99.19%).
