For the last ten years, ring-shaped pi-conjugated macrocycles possessing radially directed pi-orbitals have been subject to intense research. The electronic properties of these rings are deeply dependent on their size. However, most studies involve the flagship family of nanorings: the cyclo-para-phenylenes. We report herein the synthesis and study of the first examples of cyclofluorenes possessing five constituting fluorene units. The structural, optical and electrochemical properties were elucidated by X-ray crystallography, UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. By comparison with a shorter analogue, we show how the electronic properties of [5]-cyclofluorenes are drastically different from those of [4]-cyclofluorenes, highlighting the key role played by the ring size in the cyclofluorene family.

Airborne particulate matter (PM) has received increasing attention as it causes serious environmental pollution and huge health risk for humans. Herein, we demonstrate the synthesis of tubular conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) via a one-step cross-coupling reaction for the removal of PM from the air. Tubular CMPs possess a large specific surface area (>484 m(2) g(-1)), high physicochemical stability and mechanical flexibility and robustness. Benefiting from their abundant porosity, CMP-based filters show desirable ability for the capture of PM with a high efficiency of greater than 99% for both PM2.5 and PM10. In combination with their interestingly intrinsic hydrophobicity, a high filtration efficiency for PM2.5 greater than 99.97% can be obtained even under high-humidity conditions (relatively 96 +/- 2%), which can be maintained unchanged during a 12 h continuous test, making them highly advantageous over those hydrophilic filters that usually lose their filtration efficiency in a humid environment. Based on their simple fabrication, inherently hydrophobic wettability and high filtration efficiency, the as-synthesized CMP-based filters would hold great potential as promising filters for PM elimination in a humid environment under harsh conditions by taking the advantage of the intrinsically robust physicochemical properties of CMPs. More interestingly, due to the designable flexibility of CMPs, which makes it possible for fine-tuning their pore size or chemical composition, the tailored-design of advanced CMP-based filters for a specific purpose could be anticipated only by rationally varying the size or structure of their building blocks.

Since the discovery of the living free-radical polymerization, alkoxyamines were widely used in nitroxide-mediated polymerization (NMP). Most of the known alkoxyamines bear just one functionality with only a few exceptions bearing two or more alkoxyamine units. Herein, we present a library of novel multidimensional alkoxyamines based on commercially available, rigid, aromatic core structures. A versatile approach allows the introduction of different sidechains which have an impact on the steric hindrance and dissociation behavior of the alkoxyamines. The reaction to the alkoxyamines was optimized by implementing a mild and reliable procedure to give all target compounds in high yields. Utilization of biphenyl, p-terphenyl, 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene, tetraphenylethylene, and tetraphenyl-methane results in linear, trigonal, square planar, and tetrahedral shaped alkoxyamines. These building blocks are useful initiators for multifold NMP leading to star-shaped polymers or as a linker for the nitroxide exchange reaction (NER), to obtain dynamic frameworks with a tunable crosslinking degree and self-healing abilities.

An electroactive polytriphenylamine (PTPA-C6) is blended with poly(styrene-co-hydroxystyrene) (PS-co-PHS) as coating layers to enhance protection efficiency of PTPA-C6 on iron substrate in 3.5% sodium chloride (NaCl) solution. Experimental results show that incorporation of hydroxyl group to the polystyrene not only increases the miscibility of PTPA-C6 with PS through the hydrogen bond formation, but also enhances the bonding strength between the polymer coating layer and iron substrate. These improvements lead to superior enhancement in anticorrosion performance of PTPA-C6, even after thermal treatment. Protection efficiency (PE) of PTPA-C6 increases from 81.52% of the PTPA-C6 itself to over 94.40% under different conditions (PEmax = 99.19%).

Carbon-nitrogen (C-N) bond-forming cross-coupling reactions catalyzed by palladium-based catalysts, the so-called Buchwald-Hartwig aminations, have been widely employed for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and aryl-amine-based organic materials in academic and industrial settings. However, in solution, these reactions usually require glovebox and Schlenk line techniques, which greatly reduces their practical utility. Here, we report the development of operationally simple mechanochemical C-N cross-coupling reactions in the solid-state. Intensive investigations of various ball milling parameters revealed that the air-stable ligand tri(1-adamantyl)phosphine can be used to achieve solid-state coupling reactions between aryl halides and diarylamines with high efficiency. Notably, all experimental operations of the developed protocol can be carried out in air, thus providing a more convenient, industrially attractive, and sustainable alternative to conventional solution-based palladium-catalyzed C-N coupling reactions.

Poly(arylamine)s were synthesized by poly-condensation of 4-n-octylaniline with 4,4′-dibromobiphenyl using the Buchwald-Hartwig aryl amination. Both the NH and the Br end groups were properly modified upon addition of an end-capping reagent in an appropriate ratio. The synthesized polymers contained many impurities, such as Pd, Br, and Cl, which decrease organic light-emitting diode performance. An investigation to reduce the impurities in the polymer showed that the purification solvent plays the key role in reducing the concentration of impurities in the polymer; purification with a nonchlorinated solvent, anisole, provided a highly pure poly(arylamine) even with a simple purification procedure. Moreover, the highly purified polymer material improved carrier mobility in hole-only devices.

We have used functionalized carbazoles and indenoquonoxalines as the main building units and enthynyl groups as the pi-linkages to construct two novel dendritic fluorophores and studied their degenerate multi-photon absorption properties in both the solution phase and the neat-film state within femtosecond and nanosecond regions. In our experiments, these model compounds are found to manifest strong and widely dispersed two-photon absorption as well as effective power-limiting properties against ultra-short laser pulses in the near-IR region. In addition, both chromophores exhibit medium to strong three-photon-induced fluorescence, indicating such scaffold may serve as a reference structural motif for the development of three-photon materials.

Radical cations of bis(dianisylamino)-terminated oligo(p-phenylene)s (OPPs) with up to five phenyl moieties were characterized by means of UV/Vis-NIR and variable-temperature ESR spectroscopy to investigate the bridge-length-dependence on intramolecular charge/spin self-exchange between two nitrogen redox-active centers. Additionally, a comparative study between bis(dianisylamine)-based mixed-valence (MV) radical cations connected by p-terphenylene and hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC) pi-bridging units also provided information on the influence of extended pi-conjugation over the OPP-bridge due to the planarization between adjacent phenylene units on the strength of electronic coupling. The present study on a homologous series of organic MV systems clarifies the attenuation factor through the OPP-bridge and the linear relationship between the electrochemical potential splitting and the electronic coupling in the region of intermediate-to-weak electronic coupling regime.

Next-generation membranes use highly engineered polymeric structures with enhanced chain rigidity, yet difficulties in polymerization often limit molecular weights required for film formation. Addition-type polynorbornenes are promising materials for industrial gas separations, but suffer from these limitations owing to endo-exo monomeric mixtures that restrict polymerization sites. In this work, a synthetic approach employing the reductive Mizoroki-Heck reaction resulted in exo-selective products that polymerized up to >99% yields for ROMP and addition-type polymers, achieving molecular weights an order of magnitude higher than addition-type polymers from endo-exo mixtures and impressive side group stereoregularity. Due to this increased macromolecular control, these polynorbornenes demonstrate unique solubility-selective permeation with mixed gas selectivities that exceed commercially used PDMS. In addition to thermal and structural characterization, XRD and computational studies confirmed the results of pure and mixed-gas transport testing, which show highly rigid membranes with favorably disrupted chain packing.
