Reaction of 1,4-bis(benzo[d]oxazol-2-yl)butane (BBO) with [Ag(CH3CN)(4)(ClO4)] afforded a new binuclear silver(I) complex, with composition [Ag-2(BBO)(2)(ClO4)(2)], characterized by elemental analysis, UV/Vis and IR spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The results show that the Ag(I) complex consists of a centrosymmetric dimetallacyclic structure assembled from two Ag(I) atoms and two bridging BBO ligands. The coordination environment of silver(I) complex can be described as distorted trigonal planar, with one oxygen atom from a perchlorate anion and two nitrogen atoms from two BBO ligands. The luminescence properties of the ligand and the Ag(I) complex were studied in the solid state. The emission peaks of the Ag(I) complex are attributed to ligand-centered transitions. There is no effect of the complexation except for a partial quenching. The cyclic voltammograms of the Ag(I) complex indicated an irreversible Ag+/Ag couple.

To achieve this goal, a series of robust and hydrophilic benzoxazole-based COFs is developed (denoted as Tp-DBD, Bd-DBD, and Hb-DBD) as efficient adsorbents for photo-enhanced targeted uranium recovery. Benefiting from the hydroxyl groups and the formation of benzoxazole rings, the hydrophilic Tp-DBD shows outstanding stability and chemical reduction properties. Meanwhile, the synergistic effect of the hydroxyl groups and the benzoxazole rings in the pi-conjugated frameworks significantly decrease the optical band gap, and improve the affinity and capacity to uranium recovery. In seawater, the adsorption capacity of uranium is 19.2x that of vanadium, a main interfering metal in uranium extraction.

Evaluation of cytotoxic and apoptotic effects in MCF-7 human cancer cells was useful to assess sigma(2) receptor activity, while an in vivo mice model of inflammatory pain allowed to analyze sigma(1) receptor pharmacological properties. In vitro and in vivo results suggested that compound 19 is a sigma(1)/sigma(2) agonist, compound 24 a sigma(1) antagonist/sigma(2) agonist, whereas compound 22 might act as sigma(1) antagonist/sigma(2) partial agonist. Background/Aim: Multidrug resistance (MDR) represents a significant impediment to successful cancer treatment. In this study, novel metal [Zn(II), Cu(II), Mg(II), Ni(II), Pd(II), and Ag(I)] complexes of 2-trifluoroacetonyl-benzoxazole previously synthesized and characterized by our group were tested for their MDR-reversing activity in comparison with the free ligands in L5178Y mouse T-lymphoma (MDR) cells transfected with human ATP-binding cassette sub family B member 1 (ABCB1; P-glycoprotein) gene. Materials and Methods: Cytotoxic and antiproliferative effects of the complexes were assessed by the thiazolyl blue tetrazolium bromide (MTT) method. Modulation of ABCB1 activity was measured by rhodamine 123 accumulation assay using flow cytometry. The apoptosis-inducing activity of some complexes was also tested on the multidrug resistant L5178Y mouse T-lymphoma cells, using the annexin-V/propidium iodide assay. Results: When compared to the free ligand, a remarkable enhancement in MDR reversal and cytotoxic activity was found for the Zn(II) and Cu(II) complexes. The activity of the complexes proved to be up to 29- and 5-fold higher than that of the ligands and the ABCB1 inhibitor verapamil as positive control, respectively. The complexes possessed a remarkable potential to induce apoptosis of MDR cells. Conclusion: Our results suggest that the Zn(II) and Cu(II) complexes display significant MDR-reversing activity in a dose-dependent manner and possess strong cytotoxic activity and a remarkable potential to induce apoptosis in MDR L5178Y mouse T-lymphoma cells.
