Herein, we fabricated two types of electrospun membrane using: 1) sulfonated poly (arylene ether sulfone), which needs chemical cross-linking to increase its mechanical strength, and 2) thermally rearranged poly (benzoxazole-co-imide), which is mechanically robust while requiring the hydrophilic coating. With a high porosity and low structure parameter of the support layer, two thin film composite (TFC) membranes were fabricated via interfacial polymerization on the support layer using 1,3,5-bezenetricarbonyl trichloride (TMC) and m-phenylene diamine (MPD) monomers. Chlorine modification using NaOCl solution was applied to two TFC membranes (denoted as XBPSH-TFC-Cl and XPBO-TFC-Cl, respectively) to improve water permeability (A) of the polyamide selective layer, while maintaining decent salt rejection values (R). As a result, the highly efficient XPBO-TFC-Cl achieved a peak power density of 26.6 W.m(-2) at 21 bar using 1 M NaClaq and deionized (D.I.) water as draw and feed solutions, respectively. According to the modeling results, XPBO-TFC-Cl was less affected by the adverse phenomena (such as concentration polarization and reverse salt permeation), and showed lower performance reduction for various feed sources compared to XBPSH-TFC-Cl. These results demonstrate the potential of the next generation TFC membranes, which are commonly used for power generation and liquid separation.

A series of benzoxazole derivatives and some possible primary metabolites were evaluated as anticancer agents. In vitro anti-proliferative activities of the compounds were tested using the SRB assay on cancerous (HeLa) and non-cancerous (L929) cell lines. It was found that 17 of 21 tested compounds had cytotoxic activity on HeLa cells and the cytotoxic activities of the compounds were 15-700 times higher than on L929 cells. We generated two distinct pharmacophore models for the cytotoxic activities of the compounds on HeLa and L929 cells. While active compounds such as camptothecin and X8 fitted the two models generated for both cell lines, selective cytotoxic compounds such as XT3B fitted only the model generated for HeLa cells. Evaluation of the genotoxic activities of the cytotoxic compounds with the alkaline comet assay revealed that compounds X17 and XT3 showed strong genotoxic effects against HeLa cells at low concentrations whereas they had no genotoxic effect on L929 cells. Due to the selective ability for inducing DNA strand breaks only on cancerous cells, the compounds were identified as effective derivatives for anticancer candidates.

Quantum chemical calculations were performed to study the molecular geometry and the electronic structure of benzimidazoles GK-151B, 4, 6, and benzoxazole 11, using the Gaussian 03W software (Gaussian, Inc., Wallingford, CT, USA). Three-dimensional structure of benzimidazoles 1-3, MC-9, and GK-151B was determined by ab initio calculation using Gamess- US software. The activity of the received benzimidazoles was moderate or good. All of the benzoxazoles and benzothiazoles demonstrated much lower activity. Benzoxazoles were less active by about 50 times, and benzothiazole by 100 times than the benzimidazole analogs. Quantum chemical calculations showed differences in the distribution of electrostatic potential in the benzazole system of benzimidazoles and benzoxazoles. Three-dimensional structure calculations revealed how the parity of the alkyl substituent at the C2 position impacts the activity. Benzimidazole system is essential for the antituberculosis activity that is associated with the presence of the imine nitrogen atom in N-1 position. Its replacement by an oxygen or sulfur atom results in a decrease of the activity. The parity of the alkyl substituent at the C-2 position also modifies the activity.

An energetic study of 5-fluoro-2-methylbenzoxazole (FMBO) and of 5-fluoro-2-methylbenzothiazole (FMBT), in condensed and gaseous states, has been performed using calorimetric techniques and computational calculations. The standard (p degrees = 0.1 MPa) molar enthalpies of formation of FMBO and FMBT, in the liquid phase, at T = 298.15 K, were derived from the corresponding standard molar energies of combustion, measured by rotating-bomb combustion calorimetry. At T = 298.15 K, the standard (p degrees = 0.1 MPa) molar enthalpy of vaporization, for each compound, was determined, by a direct method, using the vacuum drop microcalorimetric technique.
