In the present study, clove essential oil (CEO) Pickering emulsions were stabilized by octadecylamine-modified carboxymethyl curdlan (CMCD-ODA) at different pH values. The droplet size and neg. charged zeta potential of the CMCD-ODA emulsions decreased as the pH increased from 3.0 to 11.0. Rheol. results indicated that the CMCD-ODA polymer/emulsion prepared at pH 5.0 showed higher apparent viscosity and viscoelasticity than other pH conditions, which might prevent droplets from flocculating. The Pickering emulsions obtained at pH 5.0 were spherical droplets with a uniform size distribution and a mean diameter of 9.54¦Ìm, and they exhibited excellent stability during 28 days of storage. The morphol. structures of the emulsions investigated by confocal laser scanning microscopy and SEM indicated that the CMCD-ODA Pickering emulsion obtained at pH 5.0 was stabilized by loading amphiphilic CMCD-ODA polymer around the spherical oil droplets and forming a weak gel network structure. The CEO-loaded CMCD-ODA emulsions had higher antioxidant capacity than free CEO after 28 days of storage at pH 5.0. Given the good emulsion stability, antioxidant activity, and great antibacterial effect, the CEO-loaded carboxymethyl curdlan Pickering emulsion has promising applications in food, cosmetic, and biomedicine industries.

Complex mixtures of bioactive ingredients in plant essential oils present complex chemistries which involve different modes of action. An increasing body of scientific reports has recently focused on the acaricidal activities of plant essential oils attributed to their monoterpene components, but information about their underlying mol. mechanism of action is scarce. Here, after the chem. anal. of lemongrass oil, a proteomic anal. of the ovary, salivary gland, and midgut of Haemaphysalis longicornis exposed to Cymbopogon citratus (lemongrass) essential oil was performed via data-independent acquisition mass spectrometry (DIA-MS) technol. to further elucidate the mol. mechanisms involved. Pathway anal. reveals the activation of metabolic pathways mediated by oxidoreductases and transferases. Furthermore, the upregulation of various calcium-associated proteins and the upregulation of cytochrome c1, cytochrome c oxidase polypeptide IV, and programmed cell death protein 6-like isoform X1 suggest a cytotoxic mode of action via the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), mitochondrial Ca2+ overload, mitochondrial uncoupling, and depolarization, and ATP depletion leading to either apoptotic or necrotic death. Morphol. alterations observed after the RNAi of a major detoxification enzyme (glutathione S-transferase) merit further investigation. Hence, the cytotoxic mode of action exhibited by C. citratus oil could be vital for the development of eco-friendly acaricide.

This is the first report of the high-performance liquid chromatog. and gas chromatog.-mass spectrometry profile of a herbal mixture (HM) made of Juniperus oxycedrus L. (redberry juniper) berries, inner bark of Betula pendula Roth. (silver birch), and grains of Avena sativa L. (oat), and its effect on the Number of micronuclei (MN) in human lymphocytes and toxicity toward Artemia salina. Constituents represented by over 1000¦Ìg per g of methanol dry extract were gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, and amentoflavone. The methanol extract of the HM at a concentration of 2.0¦Ìg/mL decreased MN frequency by 38.3%, which was more than 3 times greater than that of the radioprotectant amifostine. The essential oil isolated from the HM was composed mainly of ¦Â-myrcene (32%) and showed weaker toxicity toward Artemia salina than the pos. control after both incubation periods (24 h and 48 h). These findings suggest that the examined HM, beside its ethnopharmacol. relevance on the elimination of renal calculi, also significantly reduces the Number of MN in human lymphocytes.

The use of Thymus species amongst the public and their importance in the scientific world is increasing day by day. In addition to being consumed as tea and spice, Thymus species are used as folk medicine for respiratory, digestive, skin, circulatory, genital, nervous, visual and urinary diseases. In this study, it was aimed to examine the essential oil and ethanol extract of the root and aerial parts of Thymus pubescens Boiss. et Kotschy ex Celak in the terms of their biol. activity and chem. content. The phenolic content of the species was determined by LC-MS/MS, while triterpenoid content, the chem. composition of the essential oil as well as flavor was determined by GC-MS. In addition, their antioxidant and cytotoxic activities, as well as acetyl- (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), urease, tyrosinase, elastase, collagenase, HMG-CoA reductase and angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activities were studied. Thymol (53.33%) was determined as the major component in the essential oil, while ¦Â-fenchyl alc. (43.87%) was determined as the major component of the flavor. According to the LC-MS/MS and GC-MS results, it was found that especially the aerial parts of the species have a high amount of rosmarinic acid (3875.76 ¦Ìg analyte/g extract), quinic acid (2392.55), naringenin (970.39), oleanolic (92785.96) and ursolic (63373.32) acids. The essential oil of T. pubescens species was observed to show high activity in four antioxidant assays, e.g. inhibition of lipid peroxidation, DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity as well as CUPRAC, while the ethanol extracts showed moderate antioxidant activity. In enzyme inhibition assays, the aerial parts exerted marked BChE, elastase, and collagenase inhibitory activities (92.43¡À1.28%, 42.59¡À0.56, and 48.61¡À0.39 at 100 ¦Ìg/mL, resp.). On the other hand, AChE, urease, tyrosinase, HMG-CoA reductase and ACE inhibitory activities of all extracts were from low to moderate levels. In particular, the aerial parts of the species displayed a high cytotoxic effect (vitality%: 6.82¡À0.01 at 200 ¦Ìg/mL) in breast cancer (MCF-7) cell line. Due to its remarkable antioxidant capacity, high content of rosmarinic, oleanolic, and ursolic acids and especially BChE, elastase, and collagenase inhibitory activity, T. pubescens has the potential for using in food supplements, food preservatives, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical industries.

The present study aimed to determine seasonal influences on the physiol. characteristics of G. brasiliensis that are associated with the production of secondary metabolites, as well as the yield and composition of leaf essential oil (EO). We evaluated leaves of six-year-old plants at four cardinal points in the middle third of a canopy with four replicates during May, August, Nov., and Feb. There were assessed photosynthesis rate, total phenolic and total flavonoid contents, phenylalanine (PAL) and tyrosine (TAL) ammonia-lyase activities and the leaves were histochem. stained. We quantified isolated phenolic compounds from leaf methanolic and hexanic extracts The EO yield and composition, and the numbers and diameters of oil secretory channels in leaves were also evaluated. The photosynthetic rate peaked during Nov., whereas the total phenolic content and PAL and TAL activities peaked in Feb. Phenolic compounds were dispersed in the central rib and limbus in idioblasts. Only morelloflavone (fukugetin) was detected in methanolic extracts, and the concentration in leaves peaked during Nov. The yield and composition of the EO varied with the seasons, and the EO yield was maximal during Nov. Sesquiterpenes were the main components in the leaf EO. Our findings indicate that spring is the most suitable season for obtaining morelloflavone and a higher yield of EO from G. brasiliensis leaves in tropical regions.

Floral and sweet odors are two typical characteristic aromas of Congou black tea, but their aroma-active compounds are still unclear. Characterizing the key aroma-active compounds can provide a theor. foundation for the practical aroma quality evaluation of Congou black tea and directional processing technol. of high-quality black tea with floral or sweet odors. Gas chromatog.-olfactometry (GC-O) combined with odor activity value (OAV) is often used to screen key aroma-active substances, but the interaction between aroma components and their impact on the overall sensory quality is ignored. Therefore, in this study, OAV combined with variable importance in projection (VIP) and Spearman correlation anal. (SCA) were used to characterize the aroma-active components of Congou black teas with floral and sweet odors. Eighty-five volatiles were identified in these samples using gas chromatog.-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Twenty-three compounds were identified as potential markers for the floral and sweet odors of Congou black teas from orthogonal partial least squares discriminant anal. (OPLS-DA). Eighteen compounds were selected as candidate aroma compounds based on GC-O anal. and OAV calculations In addition, 26 compounds were screened as crucial aroma compounds based on SCA. Finally, 19 compounds were evaluated as key aroma compounds by the comprehensive evaluation of VIP, OAV, and SCA. Terpenoids are the main active compounds that contribute to the floral odor of Congou black tea, whereas aldehydes are the key compounds for the sweet odor. The proposed method can effectively screen the aroma-active compounds and can be used for comprehensive quality control of products. 2022 Society of Chem. Industry.

The present study compared the chromatog. profile of oils from P. corcovadensis leaves obtained through hydrodistillation, maceration, supercritical fluid, headspace, steam distillation and ultrasound to determine the best method for the obtainment of ¦Â-germacrene-D-4-ol. The oviposition deterrent and larvicidal activities of this compound were carried out. The main compounds identified in the oils obtained using these methods were terpinolene, 1-butyl-3,4-methylenedioxybenzene, trans-caryophyllene and ¦Â-germacrene-D-4-ol, the proportions of which varied with the extraction method employed. Steam distillation (26.48 ¡À 0.37%), maceration (25.26 ¡À 0.39%) and supercritical fluid (24.38 ¡À 0.47%) were the best methods for extracting ¦Â-germacrene-D-4-ol. The oil obtained by maceration had the highest yield and was therefore chosen for the isolation of ¦Â-germacrene-D-4-ol. Larvicidal and oviposition assays of isolated compound and the oil obtained by maceration were performed with A. aegypti. Larvicidal activity (LC50) were 18.23 ¡À 1.19 ppm for ¦Â-germacrene-D-4-ol and 6.71 ¡À 0.16 ppm for the oil. The compound and oil also exhibited oviposition deterrence activity against the mosquito at concentrations of 5, 10 and 50 ppm. Moreover, it could be assumed that the sesquiterpene ¦Â-germacrene-D-4-ol achieves oviposition deterrence by interacting with odorant-binding protein 1 (OBP1) in Aedes aegypti, as the highest FitScore was found for this macromol. target. This suggests how mosquito identifies ¦Â-germacrene-D-4-ol at the oviposition site. The findings demonstrate that ¦Â-germacrene-D-4-ol and the P. corcovadensis leaf oil obtained by maceration have considerable potential as larvicides and oviposition deterrents for the control of the A. aegypti.

In the framework of the contribution to the valorization of medicinal and aromatic plants, we have performed a chem. and pharmacol. study of the EO of different organs of P. atlantica. Then, we have studied their toxicity towards crop pests. The extraction of the EO performed by the hydrodistillation gives EO yields of the order of 0.52 ¡À 0.36%, 0.46 ¡À 0.24% and 0.31 ¡À 0.15% for the leaves, fruits and barks, resp. The chem. composition of the EO of this plant is diverse. The EO of the leaves and fruits of P. atlantica are dominated by terpinen-4-ol with percentages of 24.88% and 29.07%, resp. While, the EO of bark is dominated by ¦Á-pinene 14.61%. The evaluation in vitro of the antioxidant activity performed by DPPH and FRAP methods show that the EO of the leaves has a significant antioxidant power than those of the fruits and barks. The antimicrobial activity of the EO shows that all the tested microbial strains are sensitive to the EO of the leaves. While, the EO of the fruit exhibits an activity against the fungal strains. For the study of the toxicity of the EO of the organs of P. atlantica towards the C. capitata and the T. absoluta, we have noticed that the tested EO proved a clear insecticidal action on the larvae of T. absoluta and on adults of C. capitata. It is worth wile to mention that the studied plant can be considered as a promising source of antimicrobial agents, antioxidants and biopesticides.
