A series of nanostructured organosilicon luminophores (NOLs) composed of a central 1,4-bis(5-phenyl-1,3-oxazol-2-yl)benzene (POPOP) acceptor chromophore and various peripheral p-terphenyl and 2,5-diphenyl-1,3-oxazole donor fragments have been synthesized for the first time using van Leusen reaction and direct palladium-catalyzed C-arylation of oxazole ring. Due to different functionalities of the silicon branching centers, NOLs with different donor-acceptor ratios have been obtained. The synthesized structures are expected to possess good optical characteristics for use in photonics and optoelectronics.

The effects of polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) on human health have previously attracted much attention, but recent studies of PBBs have been focused on BB-153 and a few other congeners. PBB concentrations in serum samples from residents of an area containing an electronic waste dismantling site were determined in this study. The total PBB concentrations (i.e., the sums of the concentrations of the 35 PBB congeners) were 229-1360 ng/g lipid. The BB-153 concentrations were markedly higher in the samples from people living in the electronic waste dismantling area than in samples from people living in a nearby control area. BB-153 was found in all of the samples from the study exposure area but the concentrations were relatively low (0.07-4.70 ng/g lipid). High BB-1 concentrations were found for the first time in serum from people living in both the electronic waste dismantling and control areas. The BB-1 concentrations were 211-1280 ng/g lipid. The retention times of the 35 PBB standards and PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) with similar structures were used to predict the retention times of unidentified PBB congeners to allow the PBB distributions in the serum samples to be identified. A total of 26 previously unidentified PBB congeners were identified in the human serum samples. BB-5, BB-35, BB-79, and BB-109 were found in >50% of the samples. The PBB patterns in the serum samples were different from the patterns previously found in serum after a PBB contamination incident in 1973, so the health risks currently posed by PBBs are worth studying. Novel magnetic CoFe2O4-embedded MIL-101(Cr) with tetramethylammonium hydroxide (CoFe2O4/MIL-101T) was prepared through the facile hydrothermal method. Tetramethylammonium hydroxide acts as a template molecule and avoids the recrystallisation of terephthalic acid. The material was applied as the adsorbent in the magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) process coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography to detect the five flame retardants in environmental water samples. Several parameters affecting MSPE efficiency were systematically investigated, such as MIL-101T content, material amount, desorption solvents, adsorption time, solution pH, theoretical maximum enrichment factor (EFmax) and the reusability. Under optimised conditions, good linearities were achieved for five flame retardants with correlation coefficients R-2 > 0.9961. The limits of detections for analytes at the signal-to-noise ratio of three were 0.013-0.071 mu g center dot L-1. This method was applied to the analysis of tap, pond, lake and river waters. The recoveries were in the range of 81.5 +/- 3.2-107.0 +/- 2.3% with the relative standard deviations ranging from 0.11% to 8.66% in four real water samples. The adsorption mechanism was the hydrophobic interaction between the material and the analytes besides pore adsorption action of the material.

Transition metal catalyzed [3 + 2] annulation of imines with double bonds via directed C-H activation offers a direct access to amino cyclic motifs. An electroactive polytriphenylamine (PTPA-C6) is blended with poly(styrene-co-hydroxystyrene) (PS-co-PHS) as coating layers to enhance protection efficiency of PTPA-C6 on iron substrate in 3.5% sodium chloride (NaCl) solution. Experimental results show that incorporation of hydroxyl group to the polystyrene not only increases the miscibility of PTPA-C6 with PS through the hydrogen bond formation, but also enhances the bonding strength between the polymer coating layer and iron substrate. These improvements lead to superior enhancement in anticorrosion performance of PTPA-C6, even after thermal treatment. Protection efficiency (PE) of PTPA-C6 increases from 81.52% of the PTPA-C6 itself to over 94.40% under different conditions (PEmax = 99.19%).

The crystalline sponge method (CSM) is primarily used for structural determination by single-crystal X-ray diffraction of a single analyte encapsulated inside a porous MOF. The interpretation of the electron density provides a series of unique detailed snapshots depicting the supramolecular guest aggregation, thus showing the tight interplay between the host flexible skeleton and the molecular guests through the DMF-to-eugenol exchange process.

Developing efficient and wide spectrally acting photocatalysts for light-driven hydrogen production from water is highly desirable for solar energy conversion. Herein, diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) is used to combine with triphenylamine (TPA), bipyridyl (bdy), and biphenyl (bph) units for construction of conjugated microporous polymer photocatalysts. Although the synthesized two polymers, DPP-bdy-TPA and DPP-bph-TPA, have a similar framework structure, the former bearing a hydrophilic , bipyridyl unit displays much better photocatalytic performance with hydrogen production rates of 6918 and 2780 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) under a full-arc xenon lamp and visible light (>440 nm) illumination, respectively. Moreover, DPP-bdy-TPA has a wide photoaction spectrum with apparent quantum yields of 9.60% at 420 nm, 7.32% at 500 nm, and 0.31% at 600 nm, the so high values rarely achieved by present-known organic semiconductor photocatalysts. These results undoubtedly prove DPP is an excellent building block, and this work well exemplifies its utilization for construction of high-performance photocatalysts.

In this study, the electrochromic behavior of benzonitrile compounds were investigated. For this, a series of benzonitrile compounds with different chemical structures were synthesized and their electrochemical properties were investigated by cyclic voltammetry. Electrochromic behavior of the benzonitrile derivatives were also investigated by constructing sandwich type electrochromic devices and recording the changes in the UV-vis spectra as a function of applied potential. The compounds exhibited excellent electrochromic properties such as a high optical contrast, low driving voltage, good switching stability, high coloration efficiency, and a fast response time. All five compounds had different colors (orange, yellow-green, reddish-brown, green, blue) and driving voltages that were highly dependent on their chemical structures. The results indicate that benzonitriles are good electrochromic materials and should be of interest for applications such as electrochromic smart windows, information displays, and optical storage devices.

Airborne particulate matter (PM) has received increasing attention as it causes serious environmental pollution and huge health risk for humans. Herein, we demonstrate the synthesis of tubular conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) via a one-step cross-coupling reaction for the removal of PM from the air. Tubular CMPs possess a large specific surface area (>484 m(2) g(-1)), high physicochemical stability and mechanical flexibility and robustness. Benefiting from their abundant porosity, CMP-based filters show desirable ability for the capture of PM with a high efficiency of greater than 99% for both PM2.5 and PM10. In combination with their interestingly intrinsic hydrophobicity, a high filtration efficiency for PM2.5 greater than 99.97% can be obtained even under high-humidity conditions (relatively 96 +/- 2%), which can be maintained unchanged during a 12 h continuous test, making them highly advantageous over those hydrophilic filters that usually lose their filtration efficiency in a humid environment. Based on their simple fabrication, inherently hydrophobic wettability and high filtration efficiency, the as-synthesized CMP-based filters would hold great potential as promising filters for PM elimination in a humid environment under harsh conditions by taking the advantage of the intrinsically robust physicochemical properties of CMPs. More interestingly, due to the designable flexibility of CMPs, which makes it possible for fine-tuning their pore size or chemical composition, the tailored-design of advanced CMP-based filters for a specific purpose could be anticipated only by rationally varying the size or structure of their building blocks.
