A facile and less expensive hole transport material is essential to enhance the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells (PSC) without compromising the ambient stability. Here, we designed and synthesized a new class of HTM by introducing donor-pi-acceptor (D-pi-A). The HTM was synthesized by combining the moieties of triphenylamine, biphenyl and oxadiazole derivatives as electron donating, pi-spacer and electron withdrawing moieties, respectively, named 4 ”’-(5-(4-(hexyloxy)phenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazol-2-yl)-N,N-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-[1,1′:4′,1 ”:4 ”,1 ”’-quaterphenyl]-4-amine (TPA-BP-OXD). The pi-pi conjugation is increased by introducing the biphenyl pi-spacer. The HTM was terminated with an OXD-based moiety and framed as a D-pi-A-based HTM that trigged improvement in the charge transportation properties due to its pi-pi interactions. We rationally investigated the HTM by characterizing its photophysical, thermal, electrochemical, and charge transport properties. The great features of the HTM stimulated us to explore it on rigid and flexible substrates as a dopant-free HTM in planar inverted-perovskite solar cells (i-PSCs). The device performance in solution processed dopant-free HTM based i-PSC devices on both rigid and flexible substrates showed PCEs of 15.46% and 12.90%, respectively. The hysteresis is negligible, which is one of the most effective results based on a TPA-BP-OXD HTM in planar i-PSCs. The device performance and stability based on the TPA-BP-OXD HTM are better due to higher extraction and transportation of holes from the perovskite material, reduced charge recombination at the interface, and enhanced hydrophobicity of the HTM to compete for a role in enhancing the stability. Overall, our findings demonstrate the potentiality of the TPA-BP-OXD based HTM in planar i-PSCs.

The long-range migration ability of persistent organic pollutants was characterized by both K-OA and P-L. It is difficult for a traditional model of 3D-QSAR to capture the relationship between the double activities of pollutants and their structures. To this end, a log-normalized method was employed to treat a given data set (K-OA and P-L values) to obtain a comprehensive activity (Z) that represents the long-range migration ability of polyhalogenated biphenyls. Then, the relationship between the comprehensive activity of polyhalogenated biphenyls and their structures could be constructed; the proposed model was named the three-dimensional quantitative structure-double-activities relationship (3D-QSA(2)R) model. Two new PCB-52 molecules with a reduced ability for long-range migration were designed after analyses of the contour maps, with Z values increasing significantly by 30.44-41.30%, and the environmental persistence, bioconcentration and biotoxicity decreased by 3.37-8.99%, 26.86-26.73% and -1.17-3.50%, respectively, compared with those of PCB-52. logK(OA) and logP(L) values of the novel modified PCB-52 were predicted as 3.20-4.57% and 74.57-79.19%, respectively, by the EPI database software, and these values showed a consistent increasing trend with the Z values predicted by 3D-QSA(2)R, indicating that the established 3D-QSA(2)R could be used to deal with the relationship between the multi-activities of organic pollutants and their structures.

A microwave-assisted, efficient and rapid Sonogashira reaction was developed for the synthesis of polysubstituted aromatic alkynes. The reaction was made environmentally friendly and easy to perform by replacing the traditional amine solvents with water. The optimized reaction conditions yielded the products with high yields, while reducing the dependence on anaerobic reaction conditions with no inert gas protection. The reaction also achieved the product on the milligram level, overcoming the problem of TMSA volatilization in small-scale reactions. Thiele, Chichibabin and Muller hydrocarbons are considered as classical Kekule diradicaloids. Herein we report the synthesis and characterization of acyclic diaminocarbene (ADC)-based Thiele, Chichibabin, and Muller hydrocarbons. The calculated singlet-triplet energy gaps are Delta ES-T = -27.96, -3.70, -0.37 kcal mol(-1), respectively, and gradually decrease with the increasing length of the pi-conjugated spacer (p-phenylene vs. p,p ‘-biphenylene vs. p,p ”-terphenylene) between the two ADC-scaffolds. In agreement with the calculations, we also experimentally observed the enhancement of paramagnetic diradical character as a function of the length of the pi-conjugated spacer. ADC-based Thiele’s hydrocarbon is EPR silent and exhibits very well resolved NMR spectra, whereas ADC-based Muller’s hydrocarbon displays EPR signals and featureless NMR spectra at room temperature. The spacer also has a strong influence on the UV-Vis-NIR spectra of these compounds. Considering that our methodology is modular, these results provide a convenient platform for the synthesis of an electronically modified new class of carbon-centered Kekule diradicaloids.

Since the discovery of the living free-radical polymerization, alkoxyamines were widely used in nitroxide-mediated polymerization (NMP). Most of the known alkoxyamines bear just one functionality with only a few exceptions bearing two or more alkoxyamine units. Herein, we present a library of novel multidimensional alkoxyamines based on commercially available, rigid, aromatic core structures. A versatile approach allows the introduction of different sidechains which have an impact on the steric hindrance and dissociation behavior of the alkoxyamines. The reaction to the alkoxyamines was optimized by implementing a mild and reliable procedure to give all target compounds in high yields. Utilization of biphenyl, p-terphenyl, 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene, tetraphenylethylene, and tetraphenyl-methane results in linear, trigonal, square planar, and tetrahedral shaped alkoxyamines. These building blocks are useful initiators for multifold NMP leading to star-shaped polymers or as a linker for the nitroxide exchange reaction (NER), to obtain dynamic frameworks with a tunable crosslinking degree and self-healing abilities.

We have used functionalized carbazoles and indenoquonoxalines as the main building units and enthynyl groups as the pi-linkages to construct two novel dendritic fluorophores and studied their degenerate multi-photon absorption properties in both the solution phase and the neat-film state within femtosecond and nanosecond regions. In our experiments, these model compounds are found to manifest strong and widely dispersed two-photon absorption as well as effective power-limiting properties against ultra-short laser pulses in the near-IR region. In addition, both chromophores exhibit medium to strong three-photon-induced fluorescence, indicating such scaffold may serve as a reference structural motif for the development of three-photon materials.

Many interesting target guest molecules have low symmetry, yet most methods for synthesising hosts result in highly symmetrical capsules. Methods of generating lower symmetry pores are thus required to maximise the binding affinity in host-guest complexes. Herein, we use mixtures of tetraaldehyde building blocks with cyclohexanediamine to access low-symmetry imine cages. Whether a low-energy cage is isolated can be correctly predicted from the thermodynamic preference observed in computational models. The stability of the observed structures depends on the geometrical match of the aldehyde building blocks. One bent aldehyde stands out as unable to assemble into high-symmetry cages-and the same aldehyde generates low-symmetry socially self-sorted cages when combined with a linear aldehyde. We exploit this finding to synthesise a family of low-symmetry cages containing heteroatoms, illustrating that pores of varying geometries and surface chemistries may be reliably accessed through computational prediction and self-sorting.

We report a new class of metal-organic framework (MOF) inks with a water-repellent, photocurable fluoropolyrner (PFPE) having up to 90 wt % MOF loading. These MOF inks are enabled to process various MOFs through spray coating, pen writing, stencil printing, and molding at room temperature. Upon UV curing, the hydrophobic PFPE matrix efficiently blocks water permeation but allows accessibility of chemicals into the MOF pores, thereby freeing the MOF to perform its unique function. Moreover, by introducing functional MOFs we successfully demonstrated a water-tolerant chemosensor for a class of aromatic pollutants in water and a chemical-resistant thermosensor for visualizing temperature image. Efficient energy transfer is particularly important for multiexcitonic processes like singlet fission and photon upconversion. Observation of the transition from short-range tunneling to long-range hopping during triplet exciton transfer from CdSe nanocrystals to anthracene is reported here. This is firmly supported by steady-state photon upconversion measurements, a direct proxy for the efficiency of triplet energy transfer (TET), as well as transient absorption measurements. When phenylene bridges are initially inserted between a CdSe nanocrystal donor and anthracene acceptor, the rate of TET decreases exponentially, commensurate with a decrease in the photon upconversion quantum efficiency from 11.6% to 4.51% to 0.284%, as expected from a tunneling mechanism. However, as the rigid bridge is increased in length to 4 and 5 phenylene units, photon upconversion quantum efficiencies increase again to 0.468% and 0.413%, 1.5 1.6 fold higher than that with 3 phenylene units (using the convention where the maximum upconversion quantum efficiency is 100%). This suggests a transition from exciton tunneling to hopping, resulting in relatively efficient and distance-independent TET beyond the traditional 1 nm Dexter distance. Transient absorption spectroscopy is used to confirm triplet energy transfer from CdSe to transmitter, and the formation of a bridge triplet state as an intermediate for the hopping mechanism. This first observation of the tunneling-to-hopping transition for long-range triplet energy transfer between nanocrystal light absorbers and molecular acceptors suggests that these hybrid materials should further be explored in the context of artificial photosynthesis.
