Organic long-persistent luminescence (LPL) is an organic luminescence system that slowly releases stored exciton energy as light. Organic LPL materials have several advantages over inorganic LPL materials in terms of functionality, flexibility, transparency, and solution-processability. However, the molecular selection strategies for the organic LPL system still remain unclear. Here we report that the energy gap between the lowest localized triplet excited state and the lowest singlet charge-transfer excited state in the exciplex system significantly controls the LPL performance. Changes in the LPL duration and spectra properties are systematically investigated for three donor materials having a different energy gap. When the energy level of the lowest localized triplet excited state is much lower than that of the charge-transfer excited state, the system exhibits a short LPL duration and clear two distinct emission features originating from exciplex fluorescence and donor phosphorescence.

We report on the first experimental and theoretical investigations of ultrafast intramolecular energy transfer for a novel class of highly luminescent materials – nanostructured organosilicon luminophores (NOLs). For this purpose we designed, synthesized and investigated a NOL, (POPOP)Si-2(3Ph-EH)(6), consisting of six p-terphenyl (3Ph) donor and 1,4-bis(5-phenyloxazol-2-yl)benzene (POPOP) acceptor luminophores – well-known laser dyes widely used in plastic scintillators as an activator and a spectral shifter, respectively. The NOL shows excellent optical properties – molar absorption coefficient up to 2.6 x 10(5) L mol(-1) cm(-1), photoluminescence quantum yield up to 96% and pseudo Stokes shift of 100 nm. Its intramolecular energy transfer efficiency determined from steady-state optical measurements was found to be 93%, while the excitation lifetime was less than 1 ns. For deeper understanding of the processes of intramolecular energy transfer within NOLs, ultrafast spectroscopy investigations of the NOL, model donor and acceptor luminophores were performed for the first time for this class of compounds. It was found that the time constant of the energy transfer from donor to acceptor luminophores within the NOL is tau(1) = 105 fs, which is significantly faster than the vibrational relaxation within the donor (ca. 400 fs). Based on these findings, a kinetic scheme of the electronic excitation energy deactivation processes in the NOL was developed. The results obtained not only directly prove that the mechanism of energy transfer within the NOLs is based on Forster resonance energy transfer of the excitation energy from donor to acceptor luminophores, but also highlight the advantages of NOLs and NOL-based materials for future photonics applications – fast and efficient plastic scintillators, scintillating fibers and other spectral shifting optical materials.

A series of Pd/Fe2O3 nanohybrids with low metal content supported with Amberlite resin formate (Pd/Fe2O3@ARF) was prepared and characterized by FTIR, XRD, XPS, EELS, SEM-EDAX, and HRTEM. The coexistence of mainly crystalline Pd and Fe2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) of average size similar to 4-5 nm in the resin matrix was confirmed. These nanohybrids were used for hydrodehalogenation of polyhaloar-omatics using NaBH4 as a reducing agent in water. Notably, the composite Pd/Fe2O3@ARF-110 exhibits excellent catalytic performance in the hydrodehalogenation of different haloar-omatics. High TOF (in comparison to other related heterogeneous catalysts), recydability, and chemoselectivity between halide and C = C bond make this nanohybrid catalyst very attractive for the degradation of persistent organic pollutants originated from industries. The experimental observations and other analytical studies suggest that the enhanced catalytic activity could be due to strong interactions between Fe2O3 and Pd NPs that facilitate the cleavage of B-H bond and subsequent hydride generation.

A nickel-catalyzed cross-electrophile coupling reaction between (hetero)aryl bromides and 2,2-difluorovinyl tosylate is presented. This protocol provides facile incorporation of the gem-difluorovinyl moiety in organic molecules. The method features mild reaction conditions, good functional group tolerance, and excellent yields. Furthermore, mechanistic experiments and DFT studies indicate a Ni(0)/Ni(II) catalytic cycle, thus differing from the currently accepted catalytic cycle for nickel-catalyzed C(sp(2))-C(sp(2)) cross-electrophile coupling reactions.

In this study, we prepared a magnetic metal-graphene nanocomposite for the synthesis of substituted biaryls via Suzuki cross coupling and homo coupling reaction of aryl halides. The magnetic few layer graphene composite was synthesized by using one-step electrochemical exfoliation of graphite foil in aqueous iron (II) ammonium sulfate as electrolyte without using of any additive or corrosive media. Then, Fe2O3@FLG composite was used an efficient support for the immobilization and suitable dispersing of palladium nanoparticles. The obtained Fe2O3@FLG@Pd-0 nanocomposite was characterized using FT-IR, SEM, TEM, EDS, XRD, VSM and ICP-AES analysis. Very low loading of this catalyst was displayed high activity in the producing substituted biaryls. It simply recovered from the reaction mixture and reused without any pre-activation in six consecutive runs with no loss of its catalytic activity or the observation of any detectable palladium leaching process. Conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs) synthesised in different solvents give different surface areas dependent on the solvent choice. No one solvent results in a high surface area across a range of different CMP materials. Here, we present an investigation into how the porosity of CMPs is affected by solvent polarity. It is seen that the trends differ depending on the respective monomer dipole moments and whether hydrogen bonding groups are present in the monomers and are able to interact with the respective solventviahydrogen bonding. It is believed that this methodology could be used to influence future materials design of both structure and synthesis strategy.

Chemoselective C-H arylations were accomplished through micellar catalysis by a versatile single-component ruthenium catalyst. The strategy provided expedient access to C-H-arylated ferrocenes with wide functional-group tolerance and ample scope through weak chelation assistance. The sustainability of the C-H arylation was demonstrated by outstanding atom-economy and recycling studies. Detailed computational studies provided support for a facile C-H activation through thioketone assistance.

Selective and large-scale synthesis of [8]-cycloparaphenylene (CPP) was achieved in seven steps starting from commercially available 4-bromo-4′-hydroxybiphenyl and 4,4’dibromobiphenyl. The key unsymmetrical tetraring unit, 4-bromophenyl and 4′-bromobiphenyl-substituted cis-1,4-bis(triethylsiloxy)-2,5-cyclohexadiene-1,4-diyl (5fA), was synthesized on an similar to 50 g scale by stereoselective cis-addition of 4-bromo-4′-lithiobiphenyl to 4-(4-bromophenyl)-4-hydroxy-2,5-cyclohexadienl-one, which was synthesized on an similar to 100 g scale. Platinum-mediated selective dimerization of the four-ring unit 5fB and subsequent reductive aromatization of the cyclohexadiene-diyl by H2SnCl4 gave 2 g of [8]CPP in 6.6% overall yield (10.2% on small scale).
