Two novel triphenylamine-based derivatives with dimethylamino substituents, N,N’-bis(4-dimethylaminophenyl)-N,N’-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)-1,4-phenylenediamine (NTPPA) and N,N’-bis (4-dimethylaminophenyl)-N,N’-bis ( 4-methoxypheny1)-1,1′-biphenyl-4,4′-diamine (NTPB), were readily prepared for investigating the optical and electrochromic behaviors. These two obtained materials were introduced into electrochromic devices accompanied with heptyl viologen (HV), and the devices demonstrate a high average coloration efficiency of 287 cm(2)/C and electrochemical stability. Besides, NTPB/HV was further used to fabricate electrofluorochromic devices with a gel type electrolyte, and exhibit a controllable and high photoluminescence contrast ratio (I-off/I-on) of 32.12 from strong emission to truly dark by tuning the applied potential in addition to a short switching time of 4.9 s and high reversibility of 99% after 500 cycles.

The purpose of this work is to prepare effective adsorbents for simultaneously removing Hg(ii) ion and aromatic pollutants in water, which still remains a great challenge presently due to their different physicochemical properties. Herein, two new thiol-/thioether-functionalized porous organic polymers were prepared and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectra, C-13 CP/MAS nuclear magnetic resonance spectra, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, elemental analysis, thermo-gravimetric analysis, and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms. The results showed that the two adsorbents had a loosely porous structure, high BET surface area, and good thermal and chemical stability. The optimal pH value for the two new adsorbents to uptake Hg(ii) was 3-4. The new adsorbents presented a high adsorption ability with the maximum adsorption capacity of 180 mg g(-1) for Hg(ii) and 358-452 mg g(-1) for aromatic pollutants (toluene and m-xylene as models) and acceptable/fast binding kinetics for Hg(ii) and aromatic pollutants, respectively. The adsorbents also showed high adsorption selectivity for Hg(ii) in the presence of commonly coexisting metal ions. Moreover, the two adsorbents had good simultaneous removal ability for Hg(ii) and the aromatic pollutants at different concentrations and good reusability. Finally, the two new adsorbents were used successfully for the simultaneous and highly efficient removal of Hg(ii) ion and aromatic pollutants in simulated sewage with removal efficiencies higher than 88% for Hg(ii) and higher than 93% for the aromatic pollutants (10 mg of adsorbent mixed with 10 mL of sewage containing Hg(ii) and the aromatic pollutants at 10 g mL(-1) for each one), indicating their great potential to be applied for the simultaneous removal of Hg(ii) and aromatic pollutants in real sewage or wastewater.

The present work demonstrates the operation of a reversible supramolecular gate, i.e., an ensemble of various components linked by chemical communication, which is triggered by stoichiometric chemical inputs and by obeying the AND truth table delivers a stoichiometric chemical signal. The output triggers a series of events that finally set up a catalytic process. In detail, a three-component AND gate, composed of two distinct nanoswitches, a copper-loaded and an unloaded one {= state (0,0)}, was actuated with stoichiometric amounts of two inputs (IN-1 = Zn2+, IN-2 = Hg2+) generating copper(I) ions as output in state (1,1). In the presence of suitable reactants, ROT-2 acted as a catalytic machinery catalyzing a click reaction (= signal amplification). Verification of the functioning of the AND gate in a mixture of 12 components was thus accomplished by monitoring formation of the click product. Due to the stoichiometric design, the gate was reset to state (0,0) by adding hexacyclen and reactivated by adding inputs IN-1 and IN-2 alike in the first cycle.

A series of nanostructured organosilicon luminophores (NOLs) composed of a central 1,4-bis(5-phenyl-1,3-oxazol-2-yl)benzene (POPOP) acceptor chromophore and various peripheral p-terphenyl and 2,5-diphenyl-1,3-oxazole donor fragments have been synthesized for the first time using van Leusen reaction and direct palladium-catalyzed C-arylation of oxazole ring. Due to different functionalities of the silicon branching centers, NOLs with different donor-acceptor ratios have been obtained. Novel magnetic CoFe2O4-embedded MIL-101(Cr) with tetramethylammonium hydroxide (CoFe2O4/MIL-101T) was prepared through the facile hydrothermal method. Tetramethylammonium hydroxide acts as a template molecule and avoids the recrystallisation of terephthalic acid. The material was applied as the adsorbent in the magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) process coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography to detect the five flame retardants in environmental water samples. Several parameters affecting MSPE efficiency were systematically investigated, such as MIL-101T content, material amount, desorption solvents, adsorption time, solution pH, theoretical maximum enrichment factor (EFmax) and the reusability. Under optimised conditions, good linearities were achieved for five flame retardants with correlation coefficients R-2 > 0.9961. The limits of detections for analytes at the signal-to-noise ratio of three were 0.013-0.071 mu g center dot L-1. This method was applied to the analysis of tap, pond, lake and river waters. The recoveries were in the range of 81.5 +/- 3.2-107.0 +/- 2.3% with the relative standard deviations ranging from 0.11% to 8.66% in four real water samples. The adsorption mechanism was the hydrophobic interaction between the material and the analytes besides pore adsorption action of the material.

Since the discovery of the living free-radical polymerization, alkoxyamines were widely used in nitroxide-mediated polymerization (NMP). Most of the known alkoxyamines bear just one functionality with only a few exceptions bearing two or more alkoxyamine units. Herein, we present a library of novel multidimensional alkoxyamines based on commercially available, rigid, aromatic core structures. A versatile approach allows the introduction of different sidechains which have an impact on the steric hindrance and dissociation behavior of the alkoxyamines. The reaction to the alkoxyamines was optimized by implementing a mild and reliable procedure to give all target compounds in high yields. Utilization of biphenyl, p-terphenyl, 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene, tetraphenylethylene, and tetraphenyl-methane results in linear, trigonal, square planar, and tetrahedral shaped alkoxyamines. These building blocks are useful initiators for multifold NMP leading to star-shaped polymers or as a linker for the nitroxide exchange reaction (NER), to obtain dynamic frameworks with a tunable crosslinking degree and self-healing abilities.

A series of three fluorine containing and three non-fluorinated Diels-Alder step-growth polyarylene polymers and copolymers was synthesized via conventional oil bath heating (days/weeks). A drastic time reduction was realized with a microwave-assisted polymerization (hours). The polymers were characterized by multinuclear (H-1,C-13, and(19)F) NMR and attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, thermal analysis (thermogravimetric analysis [TGA], differential scanning calorimetry [DSC], and dynamic mechanical analysis [DMA]), gel permeation chromatography, X-ray diffraction (XRD), water contact analysis, and refractive index (RI) measurements. The NMR spectra indicated a mixture ofparaandmetaconformations through the polymer backbone increasing to moreparawith greater fluorine content. TGA revealed the fluorine-containing polyarylenes possessed the highest char yields at almost 80% at 1000 degrees C under nitrogen, and all the polyarylenes possessed onset of degradation temperatures above 550 degrees C under nitrogen and air atmospheres. XRD analysis indicated more ordering for the fluorine-containing polyarylenes which afforded the high char yields. DMA gave storage moduli values in the range of 1-10 GPa for the polyarylenes. Molecular weights for all samples were above 100 kg/mol. Water contact angles did not change with fluorine content due to the shielding effect of the pendant phenyl groups. However, the RI decreased to 1.6497 at 632.8 nm for the polyarylene with the highest fluorine content.
