In this work, a series of novel luminescent molecules of butterfly-like architecture based on TPA fragments with different central and side aromatic blocks were designed and synthesized. Various properties of the molecules were studied by differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, UV-Vis optical spectroscopy and compared within this series as well as to their analogs having terminal trimethylsilyl moieties instead of diphenylamine ones. The molecules reported are promising luminescent materials, which combine high thermal stability, good solubility and large molar extinction coefficients with high photoluminescence quantum yields for emission in the green and red spectral regions. The experimental and theoretical investigations reported give more insight to the structure – property correlations for the TPA-based luminophores, as well as to their photostability and peculiarities of the conjugation through triphenylamine units between the central and the side fragments.

In this study, the electrochromic behavior of benzonitrile compounds were investigated. For this, a series of benzonitrile compounds with different chemical structures were synthesized and their electrochemical properties were investigated by cyclic voltammetry. Electrochromic behavior of the benzonitrile derivatives were also investigated by constructing sandwich type electrochromic devices and recording the changes in the UV-vis spectra as a function of applied potential. The compounds exhibited excellent electrochromic properties such as a high optical contrast, low driving voltage, good switching stability, high coloration efficiency, and a fast response time. All five compounds had different colors (orange, yellow-green, reddish-brown, green, blue) and driving voltages that were highly dependent on their chemical structures. The results indicate that benzonitriles are good electrochromic materials and should be of interest for applications such as electrochromic smart windows, information displays, and optical storage devices.

In the course of studying silicon modifications to improve emission properties of commonly used organic compounds, biphenyl with dimethylsilylvinyl groups in the para position (3-Si) was investigated. A comparative study was performed on the exact C-analogue (3-C) and expanded to biphenyl and dimethylbiphenyl to emphasize the general trend observed. Compound 3-Si displayed emission properties clearly different than all of the investigated hydrocarbon compounds, i.e. twice stronger fluorescence (phi(f) = 0.6) and a 3-times larger radiative rate constant as compared to 3-C in acetonitrile. Searching for the source of the unique emission of 3-Si, singlet and triplet processes were investigated for all of the compounds using steady-state and time-resolved methods, and their principal photophysical parameters are reported. Experimental work was supported by the theoretical predictions obtained using the EOM-CCSD method. The results led to the conclusion that the strong emission of 3-Si must be due to silicon’s presence that enhanced intensity borrowing from the strongly allowed S0 -> S2 transition and the larger S1 -> S0 transition moment.

A catalyst- and metal-free electrochemical hydrodehalogenation of aryl halides is disclosed. Our reaction by a flexible protocol is operated in an undivided cell equipped with an inexpensive graphite rod anode and cathode. Trialkylamines nBu(3)N/Et3N behave as effective reductants and hydrogen atom donors for this electrochemical reductive reaction. Various aryl and heteroaryl bromides worked effectively. The typically less reactive aryl chlorides and fluorides can also be smoothly converted. The utility of our method is demonstrated by detoxification of harmful pesticides and hydrodebromination of a dibrominated biphenyl (analogues of flame-retardants) in gram scale.

Poly(arylamine)s were synthesized by poly-condensation of 4-n-octylaniline with 4,4′-dibromobiphenyl using the Buchwald-Hartwig aryl amination. Both the NH and the Br end groups were properly modified upon addition of an end-capping reagent in an appropriate ratio. The synthesized polymers contained many impurities, such as Pd, Br, and Cl, which decrease organic light-emitting diode performance. An investigation to reduce the impurities in the polymer showed that the purification solvent plays the key role in reducing the concentration of impurities in the polymer; purification with a nonchlorinated solvent, anisole, provided a highly pure poly(arylamine) even with a simple purification procedure. Moreover, the highly purified polymer material improved carrier mobility in hole-only devices.

Four dinuclear organotin halides of composition XnPh(3-n)SnCH2Si(Me)(2)-C12H8-Si(Me)(2)CH2-SnPh(3-n)Xn (X = Cl, I; n = 1, 2) were prepared and combined in 1:1 stoichiometric reactions with potassium 2,5-pyridinedicarboxylate, 3,5-pyridinedicarboxylate, and piperazine bis-dithiocarbamate, respectively. The reactions yielded a total of five [1 + 1] aggregates with either 21- or 22-membered macrocyclic structures that were fully characterized by elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, IR and NMR (H-1, C-13, Si-29, and Sn-119) spectroscopy, and, in three cases, additionally by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In solution, the macrocycles exhibit conformational and configurational equilibria being fast on the NMR time scale, which, for one of the macrocycles, were closer examined by variable temperature NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations.

[n]Cycloparaphenylenes, or carbon nanohoops, are unique conjugated macrocycles with radially oriented pi-systems similar to those in carbon nanotubes. The centrosymmetric nature and conformational rigidity of these molecules lead to unusual size-dependent photophysical characteristics. To investigate these effects further and expand the family of possible structures, a new class of related carbon nanohoops with broken symmetry is disclosed. In these structures, referred to as meta[n]cycloparaphenylenes, a single carbon-carbon bond is shifted by one position in order to break the centrosymmetric nature of the parent [n]cycloparaphenylenes. Advantageously, the symmetry breaking leads to bright emission in the smaller nanohoops, which are typically non-fluorescent due to optical selection rules. Moreover, this simple structural manipulation retains one of the most unique features of the nanohoop structures-size dependent emissive properties with relatively large extinction coefficients and quantum yields. Inspired by earlier theoretical work by Tretiak and co-workers, this joint synthetic, photophysical, and theoretical study provides further design principles to manipulate the optical properties of this growing class of molecules with radially oriented pi-systems.

Polyelectrolytes play an important role in both natural biological systems and human society, and their synthesis, functional exploration, and profound application are thus essential for biomimicry and creating new materials. In this study, we developed an efficient synthetic methodology for in situ generation of azonia-containing polyelectrolytes in a one-pot manner by using readily accessible nonionic reactant in the presence of commercially available cheap ionic species. The resulting polyelectrolytes are emissive in the solid state and can readily form luminescent photopatterns with different colors.
