An efficient microwave assisted synthesis of 2-substituted benzoxazole derivatives from antiinflammatory drugs aceclofenac and mefenamic acid using amberlite-IRA-402 (OH) ion exchange resin as a base catalyst were reported. The results obtained from in vitro antiinflammatory studies towards membrane stabilization and proteinase inhibitory activities showed that the synthesized benzoxazole compounds 4 and 7 possess better efficacy when compared to that of standards aceclofenac and etodolac with a percentage inhibition of 74.22 +/- 0.15, 70.64 +/- 0.24 for membrane stabilization and 75.19 +/- 0.12, 71.80 +/- 0.49 for proteinase enzyme assay at 100 mu moL/L. The synthesized compounds 4 and 7 were also evaluated for antioxidant activity which showed good inhibition (70.16 +/- 0.31 and 68.25 +/- 0.49) at 100 mu moL/L which was on Par to that of standard ascorbic acid. Graphene oxide (GO) was chemically modified with para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) to immobilize copper(ii) ions on its surface and used as a nanocatalyst for the oxidative C(sp(2))-H bond amination reaction. Also, the catalyst showed very good recyclability and much less leaching of the Cu into the reaction solution. The high activity of Cu2+@GO-PABA can be ascribed to the good synergistic effects of Cu2+ and para-aminobenzoic acid grafted on graphene oxide.

Membrane technology operating in highly concentrated solutions is essential in pressure retarded osmosis (PRO) applications to compete with other renewable energy technologies. Herein, we fabricated highly porous and robust electrospun membranes (ESMs) using a poly(benzoxazole-co-imide) (PBO) polymer. As a result, PBO-TFC-F5 achieved an unprecedented power density of 87.2 W m(-2) using 3 M NaClaq as a draw solution at 27 bar. When PBO-TFC-F5 was used for osmotic heat engine (OHE), it showed a power generation cost of only 203 $center dot MWh(-1), which was less than half the cost observed using commercial membranes. This robust, porous, and high performance PBO-TFC-F5 opens up new possibilities in membrane-based power generation systems.

Synthesis and Thermal Properties of Wholly Aromatic Poly(benzoxazole)s

A series of aromatic poly(o-hydroxyamide)s (PHAs) were synthesized by the direct polycondensation reaction of 4,4′-(2,3-quinoxalinedioxy) dibenzoic acid and/or 4,4′-(2,3-pyridinedioxy) dibenzoic acid with bis(o-aminophenol) including 2,2-bis-(amino-4-hydroxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane. The PHAs exhibited inherent viscosities in the range of 0.17-0.35 dL/g at 35 degrees C in a DMAc solution. These polymers showed low inherent viscosities and yielded brittle films. All the PHAs showed excellent solubility in aprotic solvents such as DMAc, DMSO, NMP, and DMF at room temperature and in less polar solvents such as pyridine and THF. However, all the PBOs were only partially soluble in H2SO4. The PBOs exhibited 10% weight loss at temperatures in the range of 537-551 degrees C. The maximum weight loss temperature increased with an increase in the content of the quinoxaline-containing monomer. The residue of the PBOs showed a weight loss of 45.8-56.7% at 900 degrees C in a nitrogen atmosphere.

Synthesis, Molecular Docking, and DFT Studies of Some New 2,5-Disubstituted Benzoxazoles as Potential Antimicrobial and Cytotoxic Agents

In this study, a total of 17 piece 2,5-disubstituted benzoxazole derivatives were synthesized, 2 of which were not original, their antimicrobial activities were determined using microdilution method and theirin vitrocytotoxic activities were investigated on MCF-7 and A549 cells by MTT test. When the activity results are examined, although the antibacterial effects of benzoxazole derivatives are weaker than standard drugs;3N13and3N19againstCandida albicansisolate showed the closest activity to fluconazole with MIC: 16 mu g/ml. The cytotoxicity test was measured at a concentration of 100 mu M and a 24-h incubation period. The results showed that the compounds had weak activities against two cell lines. Molecular docking studies of synthesized compounds were performed on sterol 14 alpha-demethylase protein (CYP51) and protein-ligand interactions of3N13, the most effective derivative againstC. albicansisolate, were showed (PDB: 5TZ1). Estimated ADME profiles of compounds were calculated and also3N13’s were calculated HUMO-LUMO energies, molecular electrostatic potential analysis, and geometric optimization parameters with 6-311 G+ (d,p) base set using DFT/B3LYP theory, and the results were displayed.

Effect of substitution on the solid-state fluorescence properties of styrylbenzoxazole derivatives with terminal dicyanomethylene group

Three styrylbenzoxazole derivatives with terminal dicyanomethylene group were studied in order to understand how minor modifications brought to the benzoxazole ring influence the photoluminescence (PL) properties. The three compounds, in which several molecular motions are allowed, were weakly fluorescent in organic solution. Remarkably, the unsubstituted (1) and methoxy (2) derivatives showed clear solid-state luminescence enhancement (SLE). Distinct emission characteristics were attributed to the formation of amorphous and crys-talline particles owing to scanning electron microscopy. These two compounds were also strongly luminescent as microcrystalline powders. Compound 1 that crystallized in herringbone configuration was a better emitter than the methoxy derivative 2, in which intermolecular interactions are more numerous, according to X-ray diffraction analysis. In contrast, compound 3 was virtually not emissive, confirming that in this series of dyes the presence of the hydroxy group is detrimental to PL emission, as rarely observed among SLE-active fluorophores.

K313, a novel benzoxazole derivative, exhibits anti-inflammatory properties via inhibiting GSK3 activity in LPS-induced RAW264.7 macrophages

Benzoxazole and its derivatives have been widely studied in recent years due to their various biological properties. A previous study has demonstrated that K313 (1H-indole-2,3-dione 3-(1,3-benzoxazol-2-ylhydrazone)), a novel benzoxazole derivative, inhibits T cell proliferation to yield immunosuppressive effects. However, there are no related reports about its anti-inflammatory effects. In the present study, we investigated the anti-inflammatory properties and the underlying molecular mechanism of K313 in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW264.7 macrophages. K313 dose-dependently (5, 10, and 20M) inhibited LPS-stimulated nitric oxide (NO), interleukin (IL)-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-, and 3-nitrotyrosine (3-NT) production and significantly decreased the gene transcription levels of inducible nitric oxide (iNOS), IL-6, and TNF-. In addition, the results showed that the inflammatory cytokines suppressed by K313 were not regulated by p65 NF-B, ERK1/2, AKT, or p38 MAPK. Instead, K313 increased phosphorylation of glycogen synthase kinase-3 beta (GSK-3) (Ser9) resulting in GSK-3 deactivation. Moreover, in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages, K313 and lithium chloride (LiCl) had a synergistic effect on the anti-inflammatory response. These results indicated that K313 exhibited anti-inflammatory properties and revealed the potential mechanism. K313 can increase GSK-3 (Ser9) phosphorylation to decrease GSK-3 activation in LPS-induced RAW264.7 macrophages.
