Thermally rearranged polybenzoxazole copolymers incorporating Troger’s base for high flux gas separation membranes

A new class of thermally rearranged (TR) polymers was prepared via copolymerization of TR-able o-hydroxyl polyimide and non-TR-able polyimide incorporating highly rigid Troger’s Base (TB) units. The effect of TB content, type of TR-able diamine, and TR protocols on polymer properties and gas transport behaviors were thoroughly studied. TB moieties in the copolymers efficiently enhanced polymer rigidity and induced high T-g and TR temperature as confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis and dynamic mechanical analysis. Additionally, as the TB molar ratio increased, the interchain distances of precursor polyimides increased from 0.545 to 0.585 nm. The most important finding in this work was the synergistic effect between TR conversion and TB segments, which provide the optimum contents of TB in the copolymers. As a result, 6F6FTB-0.3-450 presented a maximum d-spacing value of 0.609 nm and excellent gas separation performance of 1567 Barrer for H-2 and 1944 Barrer for CO2 along with a selectivity of 18.6 for H-2/CH4 and 23.07 for CO2/CH4, surpassing the corresponding 2008 upper bounds. Micro-structured fluorescent powders for detecting latent fingerprints on different types of surfaces

Benzazole dyes have shown great potential for application in different fields of science due to their intense and stable photoluminescence properties, associated with high sensitivity. In this study, we developed and evaluated micro-structured fluorescent powders based on benzazole dyes for fingerprint detection on different types (porous and non-porous) and colors (dark, white, and multi-colored) of surfaces. The new micro-structured powders were obtained by embedding a small amount of benzazole dye into a silica matrix (1:100 and 1:300 mass ratio) using an aqueous solution or ethanol under ambient conditions. The photophysical properties were characterized by UV-vis absorption and fluorescence emission spectroscopy. To assess the efficiency of these proposed powders, comparisons were performed with commercially available black, white, and fluorescent powders (Sirchie (R)) for different types of surfaces. The developed micro-structured powders showed intense fluorescence emission in the blue-green region, and a sharp contrast with the fingerprint residues when exposed to long wavelengths of UV light (365 nm) was observed, producing distinct ridge details on all examined surfaces.

Biological evaluation and pharmacophore modeling of some benzoxazoles and their possible metabolites

A series of benzoxazole derivatives and some possible primary metabolites were evaluated as anticancer agents. In vitro anti-proliferative activities of the compounds were tested using the SRB assay on cancerous (HeLa) and non-cancerous (L929) cell lines. It was found that 17 of 21 tested compounds had cytotoxic activity on HeLa cells and the cytotoxic activities of the compounds were 15-700 times higher than on L929 cells. We generated two distinct pharmacophore models for the cytotoxic activities of the compounds on HeLa and L929 cells. While active compounds such as camptothecin and X8 fitted the two models generated for both cell lines, selective cytotoxic compounds such as XT3B fitted only the model generated for HeLa cells. Evaluation of the genotoxic activities of the cytotoxic compounds with the alkaline comet assay revealed that compounds X17 and XT3 showed strong genotoxic effects against HeLa cells at low concentrations whereas they had no genotoxic effect on L929 cells. Due to the selective ability for inducing DNA strand breaks only on cancerous cells, the compounds were identified as effective derivatives for anticancer candidates.

Preparation and gas separation performance of thermally rearranged poly (benzoxazole-co-amide) (TR-PBOA) hollow fiber membranes deriving from polyamides

Flexible poly(benzoxazole-co-amide) (PBOA) gas separation hollow fiber membranes were successfully prepared deriving from ether-containing polyamide precursors by thermal densification with or without a supplementary coating treatment. Compared with polyimide precursors, thermally rearrangement in this work required lower treatment temperature but generated better mechanical properties. Both spinning process and thermal treatment conditions were systemically manipulated to intensify the membrane densification aiming at achieving greatly improved selectivity of the obtained TR-PBOA hollow fiber membranes. It was found that draft ratio had little contribution to selectivity enhancement. Separation performance was substantially improved when precursor fibers were dried using ethanol-hexane exchange method and then thermally treated at 350-390 degrees C TR hollow fibers obtained by combined thermal treatment with coating method exhibited the highest selectivity values in this study.

Benzoxazole/benzothiazole-derived VEGFR-2 inhibitors: Design, synthesis, molecular docking, and anticancer evaluations

A novel series of benzoxazole/benzothiazole derivatives 4a-c-11a-e were designed, synthesized, and evaluated for anticancer activity against HepG2, HCT-116, and MCF-7 cells. HCT-116 was the most sensitive cell line to the influence of the new derivatives. In particular, compound 4c was found to be the most potent derivative against HepG2, HCT-116, and MCF-7 cells, with IC50 values = 9.45 +/- 0.8, 5.76 +/- 0.4, and 7.36 +/- 0.5 mu M, respectively. Compounds 4b, 9f, and 9c showed the highest anticancer activities against HepG2 cells with IC50 values of 9.97 +/- 0.8, 9.99 +/- 0.8, and 11.02 +/- 1.0 mu M, respectively, HCT-116 cells with IC50 values of 6.99 +/- 0.5, 7.44 +/- 0.4, and 8.15 +/- 0.8 mu M, respectively, and MCF-7 cells with IC50 values of 7.89 +/- 0.7, 8.24 +/- 0.7, and 9.32 +/- 0.7 mu M, respectively, in comparison with sorafenib as reference drug with IC50 values of 9.18 +/- 0.6, 5.47 +/- 0.3, and 7.26 +/- 0.3 mu M, respectively. The most active compounds 4a-c, 9b,c,e,f,h, and 11c,e were further evaluated for their VEGFR-2 inhibition. Compounds 4c and 4b potently inhibited VEGFR-2 at IC50 values of 0.12 +/- 0.01 and 0.13 +/- 0.02 mu M, respectively, which are nearly equipotent to the sorafenib IC50 value (0.10 +/- 0.02 mu M). Furthermore, molecular docking studies were performed for all synthesized compounds to assess their binding pattern and affinity toward the VEGFR-2 active site.

Direct CH Bond Activation of Benzoxazole and Benzothiazole with Aryl Bromides Catalyzed by Palladium(II)-N-heterocyclic Carbene Complexes

Herein, we report that a series of novel palladium(II)-NHC complexes (NHC=N-heterocyclic carbene) were synthesized. Tuning the heat resistance properties of polyimides by intermolecular interaction strengthening for flexible substrate application

Intrinsic polyimides (PIs) with high glass transition temperature (T-g), excellent thermal stability, and favorable mechanical properties have been in great demand in recent years with the rapid development of flexible displays. In this work, an interchain-interaction strengthener has been introduced to obtain PIs with improved thermal resistance and stability. Benzimidazole-based diamines imparting rigidity, conjugation, crosslinking, and especially hydrogen bonding have been incorporated into benzoxazole-polyimide. Frequency shifts in the IR bands spectra of C=O and N-H bonds were indicative of strong hydrogen bonding in benzimidazole-incorporating PIs, resulting in an increase in T-g from 333 degrees C to 442 degrees C. Furthermore, because of more extensive hydrogen bonding, PIs containing bis-benzimidazole units exhibited much higher crystallinity and T-g than those containing mono-benzimidazole units. The 5% weight loss temperature (T-d(5)) was above 550 degrees C because of the rigidity of the conjugated structure and the tightly packed state of the polymer chains. T-g and T-d(5) of PIs annealed in air were higher than those of samples annealed in vacuo, whereas the opposite trend was seen in crystallinity and mechanical properties. Finally, we delineated the effects of intermolecular interaction strengthener and annealing atmosphere on the properties of PIs, which may be helpful for the future design of flexible PI substrates.
