An emerging class of thermally rearranged (TR) polymer has been of great interest for its extraordinary transport properties. More importantly, harnessing the full potential of TR polymer as gas separation membrane for CO2/CH4 separation is through its ability to resist plasticization at high pressures. Accordingly, we report here on the effect of CO2-induced plasticization on polyimide precursor (6FDA-bis-APAF: 4,4-hexafluoro isopropylidenediphthalic anhydride -2,2′-bis(3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl) – hexafluoropropane) and on the resulting thermally rearranged polybenzoxazole (TR-PBO) polymer membranes as investigated through the radial distribution function and accessible free volume analyses. Using molecular simulation techniques, structural properties such as d-spacing, glass transition temperature, fractional free volume, etc. were estimated in agreement with wide range of experimental observations, which are published within the last decade. Results showed that, TR polymer displayed restricted % FFV increase up to 40 bar due to its limited chain mobility as indicated by the dihedral distribution, and sorption sites on its backbone with lower affinity to CO2 as shown by the RDF analyses. Additionally, analysis of free volume elements suggests that the ability of TR polymers to maintain their interconnected microstructure and resistance to CO2-induced plasticization at high pressures leads also to higher diffusion and hence permeation performances and as a result, make them promising materials in gas separation applications.

In this study, a total of 17 piece 2,5-disubstituted benzoxazole derivatives were synthesized, 2 of which were not original, their antimicrobial activities were determined using microdilution method and theirin vitrocytotoxic activities were investigated on MCF-7 and A549 cells by MTT test. Estimated ADME profiles of compounds were calculated and also3N13’s were calculated HUMO-LUMO energies, molecular electrostatic potential analysis, and geometric optimization parameters with 6-311 G+ (d,p) base set using DFT/B3LYP theory, and the results were displayed.

A novel ortho-phthalimide-functionalized benzoxazine monomer containing an ortho-nitrile group has been synthesized in order to further systematically evaluate the thermally induced structural transformation from benzoxazine resin to cross-linked polybenzoxazole. The chemical structure of the synthesized monomer has been confirmed by H-1 and C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Also supporting the detailed structure is H-1-C-13 heteronuclear multiple quantum coherence (HMQC), which identifies the local proton-carbon proximities. The polymerization behaviors, including the ring-opening polymerization of the oxazine rings and the cyclotrimerization of the nitrile functionalities, are studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and in situ FT-IR. In addition, the subsequent benzoxazole formation after polymerization has also been analyzed using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and magic-angle spinning (MAS) solid-state C-13 NMR. The resulting cross-linked polybenzoxazole derived from the benzoxazine monomer exhibits exceptionally high thermal stability and low flammability, with an extremely high T-d5 temperature (550 degrees C), a high char yield value (70%) and an extraordinarily low total heat release (THR of 7.6 kJ g(-1)).

Benzoxazole derivative K313 has previously been reported to possess anti-inflammatory effects in lipopolysaccharide-induced RAW264.7 macrophages. To date, there have been no related reports on the anticancer effects of K313. In this study, we found that K313 reduced the viability of human B-cell leukemia (Nalm-6) and lymphoma (Daudi) cells in a dose-dependent manner without affecting healthy peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and induced moderate cell cycle arrest at the G0/G1 phase. Meanwhile, K313 mediated cell apoptosis, which was accompanied by the activation of caspase-9, caspase-3, and poly ADP-ribose polymerase (PARP). Furthermore, cells treated with K313 showed a significant decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), which may have been caused by the caspase-8-mediated cleavage of Bid, as detected by Western blot analysis. We also found that K313 led to the downregulation of p-p70S6K protein, which plays an important role in cell survival and cell cycle progression. In addition, treatment of these cells with K313 blocked autophagic flux, as reflected in the accumulation of LC3-II and p62 protein levels in a dose- and time-dependent manner. In conclusion, K313 decreases cell viability without affecting normal healthy PBMCs, induces cell cycle arrest and apoptosis, reduces p-p70S6K protein levels, and mediates strong autophagy inhibition. Therefore, K313 and its derivatives could be developed as potential anticancer drugs or autophagy blockers in the future.

In this work, the fluorescence turn-on mechanism of glutathione probe azido-substituted 2-(2′-hydroxyphenyl) benzoxazole derivative (AHBO) has been thoroughly studied based on the density functional theory and time-dependent density functional theory methods. The constructed potential energy curves demonstrate that the proton transfer (PT) processes of the probe AHBO and the final product AHBOG after the glutathione-azide reaction are more likely to occur in the first excited state than in the ground state. Results of frontier molecular orbital analyses show that the S-1 state of AHBO is a complete charge-separation state, and the non-radiative acceptor-excited photoinduced electron transfer (a-PET, fluorophore as the electron acceptor) from the excited azide group to the 2-(2′-hydroxyphenyl) benzoxazole (HBO) would take place upon photoexcitation, which is responsible for the fluorescence quenching of the probe AHBO. Whereas, without the electron-rich azide group, the product AHBOG undergoes the excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) in conjunction with the weak intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) process in the S-1 state. The absence of the a-PET and the two processes mentioned above provide explanations for the fluorescent enhancement observed with the product AHBOG.

Herein, we fabricated two types of electrospun membrane using: 1) sulfonated poly (arylene ether sulfone), which needs chemical cross-linking to increase its mechanical strength, and 2) thermally rearranged poly (benzoxazole-co-imide), which is mechanically robust while requiring the hydrophilic coating. With a high porosity and low structure parameter of the support layer, two thin film composite (TFC) membranes were fabricated via interfacial polymerization on the support layer using 1,3,5-bezenetricarbonyl trichloride (TMC) and m-phenylene diamine (MPD) monomers. Chlorine modification using NaOCl solution was applied to two TFC membranes (denoted as XBPSH-TFC-Cl and XPBO-TFC-Cl, respectively) to improve water permeability (A) of the polyamide selective layer, while maintaining decent salt rejection values (R). As a result, the highly efficient XPBO-TFC-Cl achieved a peak power density of 26.6 W.m(-2) at 21 bar using 1 M NaClaq and deionized (D.I.) water as draw and feed solutions, respectively. According to the modeling results, XPBO-TFC-Cl was less affected by the adverse phenomena (such as concentration polarization and reverse salt permeation), and showed lower performance reduction for various feed sources compared to XBPSH-TFC-Cl. These results demonstrate the potential of the next generation TFC membranes, which are commonly used for power generation and liquid separation.

We have developed herein a new approach to the diverse synthesis of novel derivatives of 3-aryl benzo[d]thiazole-2(3H)-imines (3a-g), by a two-component reaction between diazonium salt (2) and various synthesized N-acyl-N’-aryl thioureas (1a-g), in the presence of sodium tert-butoxide as strong base. Finally, it resulted in the production of the desired products with a moderate yield. The chemical structures of these synthesized compounds were confirmed by various physico-chemical methods viz. FT-IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, and elemental analysis.

A new highly luminescent iridium complex, bis(2-phenylpyridine-N,C-2′)[2-(2′-tosylaminophenyl)benzoxazole-N, N’] iridium(III) [Ir(ppy)(2)(TAPBO)] (TAPBO-2-(2′-tosylaminophenyl)benzoxazole) has been synthesized and its molecular structure determined using single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The Ir(III) complex displayed intense yellow photophosphorescence emission that manifested its potential for organic electroluminescence. Photo- and electroluminescent properties of the OLEDs fabricated on the basis of [Ir(ppy)(2)(TAPBO)] with doping concentration of Ir(ppy)(2)(TAPBO) varied from 3 to 20 wt% have been investigated. The OLED with 9 wt% Ir (ppy)(2)(TAPBO) exhibited maximum luminance of 9000 cdm(-2) at 180 mA/cm(-2) and had sufficiently low turn-on voltage of ca. 6 V.

Simple benzoxazines were mixed and reacted with various phenolics such as phenol, p-nitrophenol, p-cresol, 1,3-dihyroxybenzene (resorcinol), 1,3,5-trihydroxybenzene (phloroglucinol), and N-(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzamide. The influence of these phenolic compounds on ring-opening polymerization temperature of benzoxazines was examined by DSC analysis. The cresol-based benzoxazine (C-a) and phenolics yielded polymers with molecular weight of around 1500 Da. Interestingly, for C-a/resorcinol-and C-a/phloroglucinol-based polymers, a second GPC trace was observed that corresponds to a few million daltons for mixing ratios of 4:1 and 5:1. Moreover, the mixtures of C-a and N-(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzamide gave poly(benzoxazine-benzoxazole)s through a new methodology eliminating the need of synthesis of ortho-amide benzoxazines. The obtained polymers were soluble and characterized in detail by H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR, GPC, DSC, and TGA analyses.

Unassymetric bis[2-(2′-hydroxyphenylbenzoxole)] bis(HBO) derivatives with a DPA functionality for zinc binding have been developed with an efficient synthetic route, using the retrosynthetic analysis. Comparison of bis(HBO) derivatives with different substitution patterns allows us to verify and optimize their unique fluorescence properties. Upon binding zinc cation, bis(HBO) derivatives give a large fluorescence turn-on in both visible (lambda(em) approximate to 536 nm) and near-infrared (NIR) window (lambda(em) approximate to 746 nm). The probes are readily excitable by a 488 nm laser, making this series of compounds a suitable imaging tool for in vitro and in vivo study on a confocal microscope. The application of zinc binding-induced fluorescence turn-on is successfully demonstrated in cellular environments and thrombus imaging.
