The unprecedented reaction of tertiary amines with 2(3H)-benzoxazolones has been investigated. In the presence of the Ph3P-I-2 reagent system, the reaction of both acyclic and cyclic aliphatic tertiary amines led to the formation of 2-N,N-dialkylaminobenzoxazoles with the selective cleavage of an alkyl group. Especially, N-(2-iodoethyl)piperazinyl derivatives were rapidly produced in good yields when using DABCO as the nitrogen source. Only in the cases when the nucleophilicity of the substrates exceeds that of the amine, competitive self -condensation of benzoxazolones then proceeds preferentially. P-31{H-1}-NMR study suggested the involvement of an aryloxyphosphonium intermediate and/or possibly 2-iodobenzoxazole which activates the C-2 position of benzoxazolones toward nucleophilic aromatic substitution.

Rhenium(I) and (VII) complexes with cyclohex-1-enylolonium cation and bridging pyridyl derivatives are reported. The latter ligand: H(2)den, was used in the synthesis of rhenium(I) complex in its reaction with [Re(CO)(5)Cl] that gave rise to novel rhenium(I) complex fac-[Re(CO)(3)(Hhdm)] (1). The surprising aspect in the formation of (1) is the modification of H(2)den which was stabilized into a coordinated six-membered pyrimidine ring, 1,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidin-2-yl)di(pyridin-2-yl)methanol (H(2)hdm) chelate. The derived ligand acts as a tridentate monoanionic N-2,O-donor ligand towards the fac-[Re(CO)(3)](+) core. Surprisingly, the 2-aza-benzoate counter-ion that was present in the used ligand is not displayed in the crystal structure of complex 1, and might have been stabilized into 2-aza-benzoic acid (picolinic acid). The reaction of the potential tridentate N-2,O-donor ligand 2,2 ‘-dipyridylketone (dpk) with trans-[ReOI2(OEt)(PPh3)(2)] led to the isolation of [ReO3(dpk center dot OH)] (2). The ligand H(2)den and the rhenium complexes were spectroscopically characterized, and the structures of H(2)den, 1 and 2 were established by X-ray diffraction.

The biological activities of aminoguanidine (GNH(2)) and its derivatives have been extensively studied due to their properties as radical scavengers and antioxidants. Some of their biological activities may result from their binding to various metals present in biological systems. However, the reactivity of coordinated aminoguanidines has not been investigated. We report herein the synthesis, structure and reactivity of a novel osmium(iii) complex bearing the parent aminoguanidine, mer-[Os{NHC(NH2)(NHNH2)}(L)(CN)(3)](-) (OsGNH(2), HL = 2-(2-hydroxyphenyl)benzoxazole). The antioxidant properties of OsGNH(2) have been investigated by reactions with various oxidants, including O-2, H2O2, m-chloroperbenzoic acid (m-CPBA) and Ce(iv). Various osmium products are produced, which depend on the type of oxidant used. OsGNH(2) is readily oxidized by O-2 or H2O2 under ambient conditions to afford an osmium(iii) formamidine complex, [Os-III(NH2CNH)(L)(CN)(3)](-) (OsFA, FA = formamidine). With m-CPBA, the nitrosyl complex, mer-[Os(NO)(L)(CN)(3)](-) (OsNO), is formed instead. On the other hand, the nitrido complex mer-[Os(N)(L)(CN)(3)](-) (OsN) is produced when the one-electron oxidant (NH4)(2)[Ce-IV(NO3)(6)] (Ce(iv)) is employed. The molecular structures of OsGNH(2) and OsFA have been determined by X-ray crystallography. The oxidation of OsGNH(2) to OsFA by O-2 or H2O2 is proposed to go through initial dehydrogenation to give a diazoamidine intermediate. In the oxidation by m-CPBA and Ce(iv), it is proposed that the initially formed OsFA is further oxidized to OsNO and OsN, respectively, via osmium(iii) hydrogen cyanamido and osmium(iv) cyanoimido intermediates.

Specifically, visually, and quantitatively monitor copper ion (Cu2+) is critical in the area of biological and environmental detection. Herein, a ratiometric fluorescent probe with benzoxazole appended xanthenes skeleton was constructed and further employed to monitor Cu2+ in Hela cells, real water samples, and test strips. An easily distinguishable colorimetric (colorless to red) and fluorescence (green to red) change could be observed by naked eye under the portable UV lamp (365 nm) and the changes could be recovered by adding S-2. We report a new mononuclear molybdenum(iv) complex, (MoOLLSQ)-L-BIS, in which L-SQ (2,4-di-tert-butyl o-semibenzoquinone ligand) has been prepared from the reaction of the o-iminosemibenzoquinone form of a tridentate non-innocent benzoxazole ligand, L-BIS, and MoO2(acac)(2). The complex was characterized by X-ray crystallography, elemental analysis, IR and UV-vis spectroscopy and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The crystal structure of (MoOLLSQ)-L-BIS revealed a distorted octahedral geometry around the metal centre, surrounded by one O and two N atoms of L-BIS and two O atoms of L-SQ. The effective magnetic moment (mu(eff)) of (MoOLLSQ)-L-BIS decreased from 2.36 to 0.2 mu(B) in the temperature range of 290 to 2 K, indicating a singlet ground state caused by antiferromagnetic coupling between the metal and ligand centred unpaired electrons. Also, the latter led to the EPR silence of the complex. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) studies indicate both ligand and metal-centered redox processes. (MoOLLSQ)-L-BIS was applied as a catalyst for the oxidative cleavage of cyclohexene to adipic acid and selective oxidation of sulfides to sulfones with aqueous hydrogen peroxide.

New difluoroboron beta-ketoiminate boron complexes bearing benzoxazole (CBO) and benzothiazole (CBS) have been synthesized. It was found that CBO was almost non-emissive in THF, and the emission could be intensified significantly when great amount of H2O was added, illustrating AIE (aggregation-induced emission) property. CBS could not show AIE property in THF/H2O system, but its emission in solid state was also strong. The single crystal structure of CBS suggested that pi-pi interactions and the hydrogen bonds of C(Ar) – F center dot center dot center dot H, C(Ar) – H center dot center dot center dot S and C(Ar) – H center dot center dot center dot Cl would suppress the rotation of single bonds, resulting into obvious emission enhancement. It is interesting that the as-synthesized crystals of CBO and CBS both emitted azure light, and the grinding made their emitting colors to change into cyan and green, which could be recovered under fuming with DCM or heating. The reversible mechanofluorochromism was due to the transformation between crystalline and amorphous states, which could be confirmed from the results of absorption spectra, XRD patterns and DSC curves in different solid states. Additionally, the high-contrast mechanofluorochromism of CBS compared with CBO might be originated from the loose packing in crystalline state and the better pi-electron delocalization.

A novel series of substituted 2-thiohydantoin incorporated with benzoimidazole, pyrazole, triazole and/or benzoxazole moieties has been synthesized using (E)-3-[1-(4-bromophenyl) ethylideneamino]-2-thioxoimidazolidin-4-one 1 as the key starting material.
