Reaction of 1,4-bis(benzo[d]oxazol-2-yl)butane (BBO) with [Ag(CH3CN)(4)(ClO4)] afforded a new binuclear silver(I) complex, with composition [Ag-2(BBO)(2)(ClO4)(2)], characterized by elemental analysis, UV/Vis and IR spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The results show that the Ag(I) complex consists of a centrosymmetric dimetallacyclic structure assembled from two Ag(I) atoms and two bridging BBO ligands. The coordination environment of silver(I) complex can be described as distorted trigonal planar, with one oxygen atom from a perchlorate anion and two nitrogen atoms from two BBO ligands. The luminescence properties of the ligand and the Ag(I) complex were studied in the solid state. The emission peaks of the Ag(I) complex are attributed to ligand-centered transitions. There is no effect of the complexation except for a partial quenching. The cyclic voltammograms of the Ag(I) complex indicated an irreversible Ag+/Ag couple.

An environmentally benign protocol for the synthesis of a novel series of imine derivatives containing 2-oxo-3H-benzoxazole scaffold was successfully developed. Thus benzoxazolinone-6-carbaldehyde (3) was carried out by the formylation of 3-methyl-2-oxo-3H-benzoxazole (1) using hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) in polyphosphoric acid (PPA). The designed compounds were prepared by the treatment of compound (3) with primary amines in the presence of methanol as solvent, by using ultrasonic-assisted method under catalyst-free conditions and conventional heat in methanol at reflux in presence of catalytic amount of acetic acid, to afforded the pure desired 6-imino-2-oxo-3H-benzoxazoles (4a-4f) in appreciable yields; their purity was confirmed by melting point as well as thin layer chromatography (TLC). The chemical structures of the new synthesized compounds were elucidated on the basis of the FT-IR, H-1 and C-13-NMR spectroscopic techniques.

Honokiol, a natural bioactive neolignan isolated from the bark and leaf of Magnolia officinalis and Magnolia obovata, exhibits many important biological properties. In continuation of our interest in discovery of the agrochemicals derived from the natural sources, thirty-seven new 8/8′-alkylthiol-benzoxazole and N-alkyl/sulfonyl-benzoxazolone derivatives of honokiol were prepared and their insecticidal activities were evaluated against the larvae of Mythimna separata Walker and Plutella xylostella Linnaeus. The results showed that eleven derivatives exhibited potent insecticidal activity against M. separata when compared with the positive control. Particularly, compound 5h displayed the most promising insecticidal activity against M. separata with the final mortality rate (FMR) of 58.6%. Meanwhile, compounds 7n (FMR = 65.3%), 7p (FMR = 61.5%), and 8c (FMR = 65.3%) demonstrated a greater insecticidal activity against P. xylostella than toosendanin, a well-known botanical insecticide. Additionally, the preliminary structure-activity relationships (SARs) were also discussed. This study indicates that these honokiol derivatives could be used as leads for the further derivation and development of the potential pesticide candidates for crop protection.

In this study, a novel series of 4-(2-(alkylthio)benzo[d]oxazol-5-yl)-2,4-dihydro-3H-1,2,4-triazol-3-ones (4a-m) was designed and synthesized. The anticonvulsant activities of these compounds were evaluated by using the maximal electroshock seizure (MES) and subcutaneous pentylenetetrazole (scPTZ) seizure models in mice. The neurotoxicity of these compounds was evaluated using the rotarod neurotoxicity test. The majority of compounds showed anti-MES activities at 100 or 300 mg/kg. Compound 4g was considered to be the most promising, based on its potency against MES-and PTZ-induced seizures with ED50 values of 23.7 and 18.9 mg/kg, respectively. The TD50 value of 4g was 284.0mg/ kg, which resulted in a higher protective index (PI = TD50/ED50) value than that of carbamazepine and valproate. In an ELISA test, compound 4g significantly increased the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) content in mouse brain. In addition, pretreatment with thiosemicarbazide (an inhibitor of the GABA synthesizing enzyme) significantly decreased the activity of 4g in the MES model, which suggests that the mechanism through which compound 4g elicits its anticonvulsive action is at least in part through increasing the GABA level in the brain.

The inherent features of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) make them highly attractive for uranium recovery applications. A key aspect yet to be explored is how to improve the selectivity and efficiency of COFs for recovering uranium from seawater. To achieve this goal, a series of robust and hydrophilic benzoxazole-based COFs is developed (denoted as Tp-DBD, Bd-DBD, and Hb-DBD) as efficient adsorbents for photo-enhanced targeted uranium recovery. Benefiting from the hydroxyl groups and the formation of benzoxazole rings, the hydrophilic Tp-DBD shows outstanding stability and chemical reduction properties. Meanwhile, the synergistic effect of the hydroxyl groups and the benzoxazole rings in the pi-conjugated frameworks significantly decrease the optical band gap, and improve the affinity and capacity to uranium recovery. In seawater, the adsorption capacity of uranium is 19.2x that of vanadium, a main interfering metal in uranium extraction.
