Herein we report two crystalline molecular rotors 1 and 4 that show extremely narrow signals in deuterium solid-state NMR spectroscopy. Although this line shape is typically associated with fast-moving molecular components, our VT 2H NMR experiments, along with X-ray diffraction analyses and periodic DFT computations show that this spectroscopic feature can also be originated from low-frequency intramolecular rotations of the central phenylene with a cone angle of 54.7 that is attained by the cooperative motion of the entire structure that distorts the molecular axis to rotation. In contrast, two isomeric structures (2 and 3) do not show a noticeable intramolecular rotation, because their crystallographic arrays showed very restricting close contacts. Our findings clearly indicate that the multiple components and phase transitions in crystalline molecular machines can work in concert to achieve the desired motion.

Efficient energy transfer is particularly important for multiexcitonic processes like singlet fission and photon upconversion. Observation of the transition from short-range tunneling to long-range hopping during triplet exciton transfer from CdSe nanocrystals to anthracene is reported here. This is firmly supported by steady-state photon upconversion measurements, a direct proxy for the efficiency of triplet energy transfer (TET), as well as transient absorption measurements. When phenylene bridges are initially inserted between a CdSe nanocrystal donor and anthracene acceptor, the rate of TET decreases exponentially, commensurate with a decrease in the photon upconversion quantum efficiency from 11.6% to 4.51% to 0.284%, as expected from a tunneling mechanism. However, as the rigid bridge is increased in length to 4 and 5 phenylene units, photon upconversion quantum efficiencies increase again to 0.468% and 0.413%, 1.5 1.6 fold higher than that with 3 phenylene units (using the convention where the maximum upconversion quantum efficiency is 100%). This suggests a transition from exciton tunneling to hopping, resulting in relatively efficient and distance-independent TET beyond the traditional 1 nm Dexter distance. Transient absorption spectroscopy is used to confirm triplet energy transfer from CdSe to transmitter, and the formation of a bridge triplet state as an intermediate for the hopping mechanism. This first observation of the tunneling-to-hopping transition for long-range triplet energy transfer between nanocrystal light absorbers and molecular acceptors suggests that these hybrid materials should further be explored in the context of artificial photosynthesis.

A new family of ten dinuclear Ru(ii) complexes based on the bis[pyrrolyl Ru(ii)] triad scaffold, where two Ru(bpy)(2) centers are separated by a variety of organic linkers, was prepared to evaluate the influence of the organic chromophore on the spectroscopic and in vitro photodynamic therapy (PDT) properties of the compounds. The bis[pyrrolyl Ru(ii)] triads absorbed strongly throughout the visible region, with several members having molar extinction coefficients (epsilon) >= 10(4) at 600-620 nm and longer. Phosphorescence quantum yields (phi(p)) were generally less than 0.1% and in some cases undetectable. The singlet oxygen quantum yields (phi(Delta)) ranged from 5% to 77% and generally correlated with their photocytotoxicities toward human leukemia (HL-60) cells regardless of the wavelength of light used. Dark cytotoxicities varied ten-fold, with EC50 values in the range of 10-100 mu M and phototherapeutic indices (PIs) as large as 5400 and 260 with broadband visible (28 J cm(-2), 7.8 mW cm(-2)) and 625 nm red (100 J cm(-2), 42 mW cm(-2)) light, respectively. The bis[pyrrolyl Ru(ii)] triad with a pyrenyl linker (5h) was especially potent, with an EC50 value of 1 nM and PI > 27 000 with visible light and subnanomolar activity with 625 nm light (100 J cm(-2), 28 mW cm(-2)). The lead compound 5h was also tested in a tumor spheroid assay using the HL60 cell line and exhibited greater photocytotoxicity in this more resistant model (EC50 = 60 nM and PI > 1200 with 625 nm light) despite a lower dark cytotoxicity. The in vitro PDT effects of 5h extended to bacteria, where submicromolar EC50 values and PIs >300 against S. mutans and S. aureus were obtained with visible light. This activity was attenuated with 625 nm red light, but PIs were still near 50. The ligand-localized (3)pi pi* state contributed by the pyrenyl linker of 5h likely plays a key role in its phototoxic effects toward cancer cells and bacteria.

Novel magnetic CoFe2O4-embedded MIL-101(Cr) with tetramethylammonium hydroxide (CoFe2O4/MIL-101T) was prepared through the facile hydrothermal method. Tetramethylammonium hydroxide acts as a template molecule and avoids the recrystallisation of terephthalic acid. The material was applied as the adsorbent in the magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) process coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography to detect the five flame retardants in environmental water samples. Several parameters affecting MSPE efficiency were systematically investigated, such as MIL-101T content, material amount, desorption solvents, adsorption time, solution pH, theoretical maximum enrichment factor (EFmax) and the reusability. Under optimised conditions, good linearities were achieved for five flame retardants with correlation coefficients R-2 > 0.9961. The limits of detections for analytes at the signal-to-noise ratio of three were 0.013-0.071 mu g center dot L-1. This method was applied to the analysis of tap, pond, lake and river waters. The recoveries were in the range of 81.5 +/- 3.2-107.0 +/- 2.3% with the relative standard deviations ranging from 0.11% to 8.66% in four real water samples. The adsorption mechanism was the hydrophobic interaction between the material and the analytes besides pore adsorption action of the material.

Since the discovery of the living free-radical polymerization, alkoxyamines were widely used in nitroxide-mediated polymerization (NMP). Most of the known alkoxyamines bear just one functionality with only a few exceptions bearing two or more alkoxyamine units. Herein, we present a library of novel multidimensional alkoxyamines based on commercially available, rigid, aromatic core structures. A versatile approach allows the introduction of different sidechains which have an impact on the steric hindrance and dissociation behavior of the alkoxyamines. The reaction to the alkoxyamines was optimized by implementing a mild and reliable procedure to give all target compounds in high yields. Utilization of biphenyl, p-terphenyl, 1,3,5-triphenylbenzene, tetraphenylethylene, and tetraphenyl-methane results in linear, trigonal, square planar, and tetrahedral shaped alkoxyamines. These building blocks are useful initiators for multifold NMP leading to star-shaped polymers or as a linker for the nitroxide exchange reaction (NER), to obtain dynamic frameworks with a tunable crosslinking degree and self-healing abilities.

In the course of studying silicon modifications to improve emission properties of commonly used organic compounds, biphenyl with dimethylsilylvinyl groups in the para position (3-Si) was investigated. A comparative study was performed on the exact C-analogue (3-C) and expanded to biphenyl and dimethylbiphenyl to emphasize the general trend observed. Compound 3-Si displayed emission properties clearly different than all of the investigated hydrocarbon compounds, i.e. twice stronger fluorescence (phi(f) = 0.6) and a 3-times larger radiative rate constant as compared to 3-C in acetonitrile. Searching for the source of the unique emission of 3-Si, singlet and triplet processes were investigated for all of the compounds using steady-state and time-resolved methods, and their principal photophysical parameters are reported. Experimental work was supported by the theoretical predictions obtained using the EOM-CCSD method. The results led to the conclusion that the strong emission of 3-Si must be due to silicon’s presence that enhanced intensity borrowing from the strongly allowed S0 -> S2 transition and the larger S1 -> S0 transition moment.

Porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have excellent characteristics for the adsorptive removal of environmental pollutants. Herein, we introduce a new series of highly stable MOFs constructed using Fe3+ and Al3+ metal ions and bisphosphinate linkers. The isoreticular design leads to ICR-2, ICR-6, and ICR-7 MOFs with a honeycomb arrangement of linear pores, surface areas up to 1360 m(2) g(-1), and high solvothermal stabilities. In most cases, their sorption capacity is retained even after 24 h of reflux in water. The choice of the linkers allows for fine-tuning of the pore sizes and the chemical nature of the pores. This feature can be utilized for the optimization of host-guest interactions between molecules and the pore walls. Water pollution by various endocrine disrupting chemicals has been considered a global threat to public health. In this work, we prove that the chemical stability and hydrophobic nature of the synthesized series of MOFs result in the remarkable sorption properties of these materials for endocrine disruptor bisphenol A.

Typically, Suzuki couplings used in polymerizations are performed at raised temperatures in inert atmospheres. As a result, the synthesis of aromatic materials that utilize this chemistry often demands expensive and specialized equipment on an industrial scale. Herein, we describe a bimetallic methodology that exploits the distinct reactivities of palladium and copper to perform high yielding aryl-aryl dimerizations and polymerizations that can be performed on a benchtop under ambient conditions. These couplings are facile and can be performed by simple mixing in the open vessel. To demonstrate the utility of this method in the context of polymer synthesis: polyfluorene, polycarbazole, polysilafluorene, and poly(6,12-dihydrodithienoindacenodithiophene) were created at ambient temperature and open to air.
