Reported here is a molecule-Lego synthetic strategy for macrocycles with functional skeletons, involving one-pot and high-yielding condensation between bis(2,4-dimethoxyphenyl)arene monomers and paraformaldehyde. By changing the blocks, variously functional units (naphthalene, pyrene, anthraquinone, porphyrin, etc.) can be conveniently introduced into the backbone of macrocycles. Interestingly, the macrocyclization can be tuned by the geometrical configuration of monomeric blocks. Linear (180 degrees) monomer yield cyclic trimers and pentamers, while V-shaped (120 degrees, 90 degrees and 60 degrees) monomers tend to form dimers. More significantly, even heterogeneous macrocycles are obtained in moderate yield by co-oligomerization of different monomers. This series of macrocycles have the potential to be prosperous in the near future.

The effects of polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) on human health have previously attracted much attention, but recent studies of PBBs have been focused on BB-153 and a few other congeners. PBB concentrations in serum samples from residents of an area containing an electronic waste dismantling site were determined in this study. The total PBB concentrations (i.e., the sums of the concentrations of the 35 PBB congeners) were 229-1360 ng/g lipid. The BB-153 concentrations were markedly higher in the samples from people living in the electronic waste dismantling area than in samples from people living in a nearby control area. BB-153 was found in all of the samples from the study exposure area but the concentrations were relatively low (0.07-4.70 ng/g lipid). High BB-1 concentrations were found for the first time in serum from people living in both the electronic waste dismantling and control areas. The BB-1 concentrations were 211-1280 ng/g lipid. The retention times of the 35 PBB standards and PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) with similar structures were used to predict the retention times of unidentified PBB congeners to allow the PBB distributions in the serum samples to be identified. A total of 26 previously unidentified PBB congeners were identified in the human serum samples. BB-5, BB-35, BB-79, and BB-109 were found in >50% of the samples. The PBB patterns in the serum samples were different from the patterns previously found in serum after a PBB contamination incident in 1973, so the health risks currently posed by PBBs are worth studying. The salen-porphyrin based conjugated microporous polymer (SP-CMP) was first constructed by polycondensation reaction of a salen-dialdehyde derivative and pyrrole. Due to the outstanding chemical and thermal stability, abundant micropores with a reasonable pore size, and ordered salen-porphyrin arrays in the A(4)B(4)-type polymer framework, the functional CMP was further applied as a Pd nanoparticle support by the coordinate interactions between the polydentate chelating sites with Pd(OAc)(2) and subsequent reduction with NaBH4. The as-synthesized composite material (Pd@SP-CMP) was fully characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and solid-state C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The porous property of Pd@SP-CMP was also characterized by N-2 adsorption/desorption isotherms and the obtained material exhibited a Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area of 266 m(2) g(-1), together with a pore volume of 0.192 cm(3) g(-1). The microscopic morphology of Pd@SP-CMP was further evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The Pd@SP-CMP material with highly dispersed Pd nanoparticles exhibited excellent catalytic activity towards Suzuki-Miyaura and Heck-Mizoroki coupling reactions in water or in the dioxane/water mixture. In addition, Pd@SP-CMP also displayed outstanding stability and recyclability, and it can be reused without loss of activity in ten successive reactions. More importantly, the salen-porphyrin based CMPs could be the promising candidates for developing high-performance heterogeneous catalysts.

Novel palladium-doped nanoparticles have been explored to serve as the first metal oxide-derived heterogeneous catalyst for Ullmann reaction of chloroarenes under mild condition (34 degrees C). This heterogeneous catalyst exhibited high catalytic activity towards the Ullmann homocoupling of chloroarenes into a series of useful symmetrically biaryl products with good to excellent yields in the presence of ethanol and NaOH, thereby leading to green and economical Ullmann reaction. The produced nanoparticles were successfully characterized by various techniques including PXRD, XPS, HRTEM, SEM-EDS, BET, TGA techniques, elemental mapping analysis and ICP-OES. Interestingly, based on characterization and experimental data, a reasonable mechanism has been proposed. Also, the formation of aryl methyl ketone as a by-product has been further confirmed by isotopic labelling experiments that the acetyl moiety is derived from ethanol. Moreover, the catalyst was stable and could be easily reused up to 5 times under atmospheric air without suffering significant loss in catalytic activity.

This study intends to design and prepare a new magnetic copper catalyst and its activity was assessed by carbon-carbon coupling reactions. For this purpose, 1-[3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl] urea (TMSPU), hydrazine and CuI were used sequentially to modify Fe3O4@SiO2 core-shell magnetic nanoparticles to obtain an efficient magnetic transition metal catalyst. Various analytical techniques were used to characterize the catalyst to show that the achieved structure and its properties are well-suited for coupling reactions. Finally, Mizoroki-Heck and Ullmann coupling reactions were performed using Fe3O4@SiO2@PrNCu catalyst. The new catalyst offer simple synthetic procedure, convenient use for routine casework and low price. The Fe3O4@SiO2@PrNCu catalyst was easily separated by means of a permanent and ordinary magnet and the recovered catalyst was reused in six cycles without any significant loss of activity. Traditionally, electrochromic materials rely on counter redox materials like ferrocene to realize redox processes. In this work, two novel, closely related series of electrochromic materials bearing push-pull electronic structure were designed and synthesised (N,N,N’,N’-tetra(pyridin-4-yl)-1,4-phenylenediamine derivatives (TPPDs) and N,N,N ‘,N ‘-tetra(pyridin-4-yl)benzidine derivatives (TPBDs)). When stimulated by an external electric field, both series of compounds exhibited intramolecular charge transfer because of their push-pull electronic structures. Therefore, the TPPDs and TPBDs could undergo redox processes without the assistance of counter electrode chemicals. Furthermore, the TPPDs and TPBDs could replace the electrolyte that is required in conventional electrochromic devices (ECDs) because of their conductivity. This allowed the fabrication of a simple, single-component ECD.

Polyelectrolytes play an important role in both natural biological systems and human society, and their synthesis, functional exploration, and profound application are thus essential for biomimicry and creating new materials. In this study, we developed an efficient synthetic methodology for in situ generation of azonia-containing polyelectrolytes in a one-pot manner by using readily accessible nonionic reactant in the presence of commercially available cheap ionic species. The resulting polyelectrolytes are emissive in the solid state and can readily form luminescent photopatterns with different colors. The azonia-containing polyelectrolytes possess extraordinary potency of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, enabling them to impressively kill methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a drug resistant superbug, both in vitro and in vivo.

Developing efficient and wide spectrally acting photocatalysts for light-driven hydrogen production from water is highly desirable for solar energy conversion. Herein, diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) is used to combine with triphenylamine (TPA), bipyridyl (bdy), and biphenyl (bph) units for construction of conjugated microporous polymer photocatalysts. Although the synthesized two polymers, DPP-bdy-TPA and DPP-bph-TPA, have a similar framework structure, the former bearing a hydrophilic , bipyridyl unit displays much better photocatalytic performance with hydrogen production rates of 6918 and 2780 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) under a full-arc xenon lamp and visible light (>440 nm) illumination, respectively. Moreover, DPP-bdy-TPA has a wide photoaction spectrum with apparent quantum yields of 9.60% at 420 nm, 7.32% at 500 nm, and 0.31% at 600 nm, the so high values rarely achieved by present-known organic semiconductor photocatalysts. These results undoubtedly prove DPP is an excellent building block, and this work well exemplifies its utilization for construction of high-performance photocatalysts.

In this study, the electrochromic behavior of benzonitrile compounds were investigated. For this, a series of benzonitrile compounds with different chemical structures were synthesized and their electrochemical properties were investigated by cyclic voltammetry. Electrochromic behavior of the benzonitrile derivatives were also investigated by constructing sandwich type electrochromic devices and recording the changes in the UV-vis spectra as a function of applied potential. The compounds exhibited excellent electrochromic properties such as a high optical contrast, low driving voltage, good switching stability, high coloration efficiency, and a fast response time. All five compounds had different colors (orange, yellow-green, reddish-brown, green, blue) and driving voltages that were highly dependent on their chemical structures. The results indicate that benzonitriles are good electrochromic materials and should be of interest for applications such as electrochromic smart windows, information displays, and optical storage devices.

The preparation of copolymers bearing N-methylcarbazole and 2,7-linked 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene units has been carried out using the N-methyl-2,7-di(2-(3,4-ethylenedioxythienyl))carbazole monomer, which has been chemically synthesized through the Stille coupling reaction of 2,7-dibromo-N-methylcarbazole and tributyl-stannylated 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene. Then, the monomer was electropolymerized by chronoamperometry in acetonitrile with 0.1 M LiClO4 under a constant potential of 0.70 V and using steel AISI 316 electrodes. The electrochemical activity and stability, charge-discharge capacity, charge transfer resistance and surface properties (i.e. morphology, topography and wettability) of the resulting polymer have been characterized and compared with those reported for poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene). Finally, the polymer has been obtained by potentiodynamic sweep, applying around 100 cyclic voltammetry steps to an acetonitrile solution of the N-methyl-2,7-di(2-(3,4-ethylenedioxythienyl))carbazole monomer with 0.1 M LiClO4. Results show that although this technique has been mostly used to electropolymerize diheteroaromatic-subtituted carbazoles, the resulting material presents serious disadvantages with respect to that produced by chronoamperometry under a constant potential.
