A catalyst system derived from commercially available Cu(NO3)(2)center dot 3H(2)O and 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid is applied to the homocoupling reaction of arylboronic acids. This transformation provides a convenient approach to symmetrical biaryls with good to excellent yields (39%95%), and exhibits good functional group compatibility. Furthermore, biaryl can be prepared in gram quantities in good yield.

A side-chain-extended conjugation strategy is demonstrated here to improve the photocatalytic performance of a linear conjugated polymer for hydrogen production from water. For this, polymers P0, P1, and P2 were designed and synthesized based on benzodithiophene and dibenzothiophene S,S-dioxide. Compared with P0, P1 and P2 have two additional thiophene units conjugated in the polymer skeleton along the main-chain and side-chain directions, respectively. Studies found that side chain-conjugated functionalization in P2 enhances thermal stability, redshifts light-absorption bands, narrows the polymer bandgap, prolongs the exciton lifetime, enlarges the photocatalytic over-potential, increases charge mobility, reduces charge transport resistance, and thus improves the hydrogen evolution rate (HER) by a factor of 160 fold. Although performance improvement is still observed in P1, the factor is only 3.6 fold. Thus, P2 exhibits the most promising performance among the three polymers with a HER of 20 314 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) in the presence of 3 wt% Pt cocatalyst and a record apparent quantum yield of 7.04% at 500 nm, rendering it an excellent green light photocatalyst.

Yamamoto coupling polymerization has been used for the synthesis of polymeric chiral organocatalysts. Cinchona squaramide derivatives with dibromophenyl moiety were polymerized under the Yamamoto coupling conditions to afford the corresponding chiral polymers in good yields. Using this technique, novel cinchona alkaloid polymers containing the squaramide moiety were designed and successfully synthesized. In addition to the homopolymerization of cinchona squaramide monomers with a dibromophenyl group, achiral comonomers such as dibromobenzene were copolymerized with the cinchona monomers to yield chiral copolymers. These chiral polymers were successfully utilized as polymeric catalysts in asymmetric Michael addition reactions. Good to excellent enantioselectivities were observed for different types of asymmetric Michael reactions. Using the chiral homopolymer catalyst P4, almost perfect diastereoselectivity (>100:1) with 99% ee was obtained for the reaction between methyl 2-oxocyclopentanecarboxylate 25 and trans-beta-nitrostyrene 17. The polymer catalysts developed in this study have robust structures and can be reused several times without a loss in their catalytic activities.

We report a new class of metal-organic framework (MOF) inks with a water-repellent, photocurable fluoropolyrner (PFPE) having up to 90 wt % MOF loading. These MOF inks are enabled to process various MOFs through spray coating, pen writing, stencil printing, and molding at room temperature. Upon UV curing, the hydrophobic PFPE matrix efficiently blocks water permeation but allows accessibility of chemicals into the MOF pores, thereby freeing the MOF to perform its unique function. Moreover, by introducing functional MOFs we successfully demonstrated a water-tolerant chemosensor for a class of aromatic pollutants in water and a chemical-resistant thermosensor for visualizing temperature image. This approach would open up innumerable opportunities for those MOFs that are otherwise dormant.

Using nanoscale building blocks to construct hierarchical materials is a radical new branch point in materials discovery that promises new structures and emergent functionality. Understanding the design principles that govern nanoparticle assembly is critical to moving this field forward. By exploiting mixed ligand environments to target patchy nanoparticle surfaces, we have demonstrated a novel method of colloidal quantum dot (QD) assembly that gives rise to 2D structures. The equilibration of solutions of spherical and quasi-spherical QDs, including CdS, CdSe, and InP, with 2,2′-bipyridine-5,5′-diacrylic acid resulted in the preferential formation of 2D assemblies over the course of days as determined by transmission electron microscopy analysis. Small-angle X-ray scattering confirms the existence of the QD assemblies in solution. The dependence of the assembly on linker properties (length and rigidity), linker concentration, and total concentration was investigated, together with the data point to a mechanism involving ligand redistribution to create a patchy surface that maximizes the steric repulsion of neighboring QDs. By operating in an underexchanged regime, the arising patchiness results in enthalpically preferred directions of cross-linking that can be accessed by thermal equilibration.

Poly(arylamine)s were synthesized by poly-condensation of 4-n-octylaniline with 4,4′-dibromobiphenyl using the Buchwald-Hartwig aryl amination. Both the NH and the Br end groups were properly modified upon addition of an end-capping reagent in an appropriate ratio. The synthesized polymers contained many impurities, such as Pd, Br, and Cl, which decrease organic light-emitting diode performance. An investigation to reduce the impurities in the polymer showed that the purification solvent plays the key role in reducing the concentration of impurities in the polymer; purification with a nonchlorinated solvent, anisole, provided a highly pure poly(arylamine) even with a simple purification procedure. Moreover, the highly purified polymer material improved carrier mobility in hole-only devices.

The development of novel multi-substituted aryl-phosphonate compounds offers promise as new building blocks for metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials with excellent properties in regards to porosity and gas sorption. We demonstrate the efficiency of the palladium-catalyzed Hirao cross-coupling reaction in the synthesis of substituted phosphonates; however, attempts to prepare derivatives with isoretical expansion through the cyclization of 4-(4?-bromophenyl)acetophenone resulted in an extremely low yield, with the isolation of the dimer intermediate. Ab initio calculations showed that while the trimerization of acetophenone is exothermic, that of 4-phenyl acetophenone is endothermic. By contrast, the cyclization of 4-(4?-bromophenyl)benzonitrile is exothermic and allows for the formation of the appropriate phosphonic acid. The benzonitrile methodology also allows for the formation of ortho methyl derivatives with high steric hindrance. All the multi-substituted aryl-phosphonate compounds reported herein can be prepared on a multi gram scale enabling researchers a wider range of building blocks for phosphonate MOFs.

Facile polymerization reaction conditions were developed for synthesizing conjugated polymers via direct arylation and the Buchwald-Hartwig aryl amination reactions under aerobic conditions. Refluxing the reaction solvent and using XPhos Pd G2 as a precatalyst proved to be a tolerant polymerization protocol for direct arylation polycondensation, which eliminates the need for an inert gas atmosphere and can successfully proceed using commercially available, reagent-grade N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as the solvent. This strategy was also successfully applied to the Buchwald-Hartwig aryl amination polycondensation in toluene, which provided poly(triarylamine)s in air.

A novel family of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-incorporated Se-Fe-Cu compounds, bis-1,3-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene (bis-Me-2-imy)-containing compound [(mu(4)-Se)Fe-3(CO)(9){Cu(Me-2-imy)}(2)] (2), bis-N-methyl- or bis-N-isopropyl-substituted benzimidazol-2-ylidene (bis-Me-2-bimy or bis-Pr-i(2)-bimy)-incorporated compounds [(mu(4)-Se)Fe-3(CO)(9){Cu(Me-2-bimy)}(2)] (3) or [(mu(4)-Se)Fe-3(CO)(9){Cu(Pr-i(2)-bimy)}(2)] (4), and a bis-1,3-dimethyl-4,5-dichloroimidazol-2-ylidene (bis-Me-2-Cl-2-imy)-containing compound [(mu(3)-Se)Fe-3(CO)(9){Cu(Me-2-Cl-2-imy)}(2)] (5), were synthesized in moderate yields in facile one-pot reactions of the ternary pre-designed compound [(mu(3)-Se)Fe-3(CO)(9){Cu(MeCN)}(2)] (1) with the corresponding imidazolium salts and (KOBu)-Bu-t in THF in an ice-water bath. Single-crystal X-ray analyses revealed that the Me-2-imy compound 2 or the Me-2-bimy compound 3 each exhibited a trigonal bipyramidal SeFe3(CO)(9)Cu geometry with an Fe2Cu plane further capped by a Cu(Me-2-imy) or Cu(Me-2-bimy) fragment, respectively, with one long Cu-Cu covalent bond. In addition, compound 4 also comprised a trigonal bipyramidal SeFe3(CO)(9)Cu core structure, but the second Cu(Pr-i(2)-bimy) group bridged the equatorial Fe-Fe edge with two unbonded Cu atoms, due to the presence of a sterically bulky Pr-i(2)-bimy fragment. On the other hand, the strong electron-withdrawing chloro-containing NHC compound 5 showed a comparatively open tetrahedral SeFe3(CO)(9) metal core, where two Fe-Fe edges each were further bridged by a Cu(Me-2-Cl-2-imy) fragment. Due to the nonclassical C-H center dot center dot center dot O(carbonyl) hydrogen bonds between the CO groups of the SeFe3(CO)(9)Cu-2 core and CH moieties of the neighboring NHC ligands, both compounds 2 and 3 comprised a one-dimensional network, while compounds 4 and 5 each were made up of a two-dimensional framework in the solid state, which efficiently enhanced the stability of these Se-Fe-Cu NHC compounds. Importantly, all of these synthesized Se-Fe-Cu NHC compounds 2-5 had pronounced catalytic activities for the homocoupling of arylboronic acids with high catalytic yields. Finally, these Se-containing Fe-Cu NHC compounds further represented excellent models for studying chalcogen effects in comparison to their Te analogs, as demonstrated by their catalytic performances and electrochemical behaviors, and by DFT calculations.
