Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC x GC) based on flow-modulation (FM) is gaining increasing attention as an alternative to thermal modulation (TM), the recognized GCxGC benchmark, thanks to its lower operational cost and rugged performance. An accessible, rational procedure to perform method translation between the two platforms would be highly valuable to facilitate compatibility and consequently extend the flexibility and applicability of GC x GC. To enable an effective transfer, the methodology needs to ensure preservation of the elution pattern, separation power, and sensitivity. Here, a loop-type thermal modulation system with dual detection (TM-GCxGC-MS/FID) used for the targeted analysis of allergens in fragrances is selected as reference method. Initially, six different columns configurations are systematically evaluated for the flow-modulated counterpart. The set-up providing the most consistent chromatographic separation (20 m x 0.18 mm d(c) x 0.18 mu m d(f) + 1.8 m x 0.18 mm d(c) x 0.18 mu m d(f)) is further evaluated to assess its overall performance in terms of sensitivity, linearity, accuracy, and pattern reliability. The experimental results convincingly show that the method translation procedure is effective and allows successful transfer of the target template metadata. Novel gemini (tail-head-spacer-head-tail) bis-quaternary ammonium compounds (bis-QACs) with a biphenyl spacer between two pyridinium heads were synthesized and compared with commonly used antiseptics such as benzalkonium chloride (BAC) and chlorhexidine digluconate (CHG). The series of compounds showed high inhibitory activity against five bacterial strains and two fungi. The compounds, which contain C8H17-C10H21 aliphatic tails best within the series. A counterion change does not affect MIC in general. Cytotoxicity on human embryonic kidney cells and haemolysis were also investigated. For bis-QACs cytotoxic effect was lower than for 3,3 ‘-[1,4-phenylenebis(oxy)]bis(1-dodecylpyridinium) dibromide (3PHBO-12), that is their closest structural analogue, and for BAC.

A catalyst- and metal-free electrochemical hydrodehalogenation of aryl halides is disclosed. Our reaction by a flexible protocol is operated in an undivided cell equipped with an inexpensive graphite rod anode and cathode. Trialkylamines nBu(3)N/Et3N behave as effective reductants and hydrogen atom donors for this electrochemical reductive reaction. Various aryl and heteroaryl bromides worked effectively. The typically less reactive aryl chlorides and fluorides can also be smoothly converted. The utility of our method is demonstrated by detoxification of harmful pesticides and hydrodebromination of a dibrominated biphenyl (analogues of flame-retardants) in gram scale.

Computational analyses of toxicological processes enables high-throughput screening of chemical substances and prediction of their endpoints in biological systems. In particular, quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models have been increasingly applied to assess the environmental effects of a plethora of toxic materials. In recent years, some more highlighted types of toxicants are endocrine disruptors (EDs, which are chemicals that can interfere with any hormone-related metabolism). Because EDs may significantly affect animal development and reproduction, rapidly predicting the adverse effects of EDs using in silico techniques is required. This study presents an in silico method to generate prediction data on the effects of representative EDs in aquatic vertebrates, particularly fish species. The protocol describes an example utilizing the automated workflow of the QSAR Toolbox software developed by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to enable acute ecotoxicity predictions of EDs. As a result, the following are determined: (1) calculation of the numerical correlations between the concentration for 50% of lethality (LC50) and octanol-water partition coefficient (K-ow), (2) output performances in which the LC50 values determined in experiments are compared to those generated by computations, and (3) the dependence of estrogen receptor binding affinity on the relationship between K-ow and LC50.

The crystalline sponge method (CSM) is primarily used for structural determination by single-crystal X-ray diffraction of a single analyte encapsulated inside a porous MOF. As the host-guest systems often show severe disorder, reliable crystallographic determination is demanding; thus the dynamics of the guest entering and the formation of nanoconfined molecular aggregates has not been in the spotlight. A new family of ten dinuclear Ru(ii) complexes based on the bis[pyrrolyl Ru(ii)] triad scaffold, where two Ru(bpy)(2) centers are separated by a variety of organic linkers, was prepared to evaluate the influence of the organic chromophore on the spectroscopic and in vitro photodynamic therapy (PDT) properties of the compounds. The bis[pyrrolyl Ru(ii)] triads absorbed strongly throughout the visible region, with several members having molar extinction coefficients (epsilon) >= 10(4) at 600-620 nm and longer. Phosphorescence quantum yields (phi(p)) were generally less than 0.1% and in some cases undetectable. The singlet oxygen quantum yields (phi(Delta)) ranged from 5% to 77% and generally correlated with their photocytotoxicities toward human leukemia (HL-60) cells regardless of the wavelength of light used. Dark cytotoxicities varied ten-fold, with EC50 values in the range of 10-100 mu M and phototherapeutic indices (PIs) as large as 5400 and 260 with broadband visible (28 J cm(-2), 7.8 mW cm(-2)) and 625 nm red (100 J cm(-2), 42 mW cm(-2)) light, respectively. The bis[pyrrolyl Ru(ii)] triad with a pyrenyl linker (5h) was especially potent, with an EC50 value of 1 nM and PI > 27 000 with visible light and subnanomolar activity with 625 nm light (100 J cm(-2), 28 mW cm(-2)). The lead compound 5h was also tested in a tumor spheroid assay using the HL60 cell line and exhibited greater photocytotoxicity in this more resistant model (EC50 = 60 nM and PI > 1200 with 625 nm light) despite a lower dark cytotoxicity. The in vitro PDT effects of 5h extended to bacteria, where submicromolar EC50 values and PIs >300 against S. mutans and S. aureus were obtained with visible light. This activity was attenuated with 625 nm red light, but PIs were still near 50. The ligand-localized (3)pi pi* state contributed by the pyrenyl linker of 5h likely plays a key role in its phototoxic effects toward cancer cells and bacteria.

Constructing effective photocatalysts with visible light response to achieve rapid dehalogenation of polyhalogenated compounds remains a challenge nowadays. Herein, Pd nanoclusters-decorated TiO2 nanosheets with surface defects (Pd/TNS) are designed for polyhalogenated biphenyls dehalogenation under visible light. Pd/TNS is able to rapidly remove bromine atoms of 4-bromobiphenyl in 30 min. Experimental results reveal that oxygen vacancies and Ti3+ are in-situ generated in TNS during Pd photodeposition, which extend the absorption band edge of Pd/TNS to visible light region. Besides, the unique two-dimensional nanosheets structure of TNS contributes to a high surface area for high dispersion of Pd nanoclusters. Importantly, the Pd nanoclusters serve to activate carbon-halogen bond in polyhalogenated biphenyls and hydrogen-oxygen in H2O. The high dehalogenation efficiency could be assigned to a strong chemical interaction and synergistic effect between the Pd nanoclusters and TiO2(B) nanosheets. Finally, a collaborative mechanism is proposed for photocatalytic dehalogenation of polyhalogenated biphenyls on Pd/TNS.

The fish bioconcentration factor (BCF) is an important aspect within bioaccumulation assessments. Several factors have been suggested to influence BCF values – including species, developmental stage, mixture exposure, and calculation method. However, their exact contribution to variance in BCF values is unknown. Within this study we assessed the relative impact of these test characteristics on BCF values and analyzed the reproducibility of aquatic exposure bioconcentration tests. Linear mixed effects analyses were performed on a newly develop database to investigate the relationship between the response variable (i.e. lipid normalized log BCF values) and several test characteristics as fixed effects. Lower BCF values were observed for substances that were simultaneously applied with high molecular weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons compared to single substance exposure (with an average difference of -0.81 log BCF). Also, lower BCFs upon kinetic determination were observed compared to steady-state BCFs (log BCF -0.27), and lower BCFs for species from the Ostariophysi subcohort level (log BCF -0.17 to -0.15). In addition, data analysis showed high variation within BCF values for single substances (average SD = log BCF 0.21), which questions the robustness of the current bioaccumulation assessments. For example, the 95% confidence range of a BCF value of 2500 ranges from 953 (‘not-bioaccumulative’) to 6561 (‘very bioaccumulative’). Our results show that the use of one single BCF leads to a high uncertainty in bioaccumulation assessments. We strongly recommend that within future bioconcentration studies, the used experimental design and test conditions are described in detail and justified to support solid interpretation. Understanding the design principles that govern nanoparticle assembly is critical to moving this field forward. By exploiting mixed ligand environments to target patchy nanoparticle surfaces, we have demonstrated a novel method of colloidal quantum dot (QD) assembly that gives rise to 2D structures. The equilibration of solutions of spherical and quasi-spherical QDs, including CdS, CdSe, and InP, with 2,2′-bipyridine-5,5′-diacrylic acid resulted in the preferential formation of 2D assemblies over the course of days as determined by transmission electron microscopy analysis. Small-angle X-ray scattering confirms the existence of the QD assemblies in solution. The dependence of the assembly on linker properties (length and rigidity), linker concentration, and total concentration was investigated, together with the data point to a mechanism involving ligand redistribution to create a patchy surface that maximizes the steric repulsion of neighboring QDs. By operating in an underexchanged regime, the arising patchiness results in enthalpically preferred directions of cross-linking that can be accessed by thermal equilibration.
