Main observation and conclusion Two bis-imidazolium salts LH2 center dot Cl-2 and LH2 center dot(PF6)(2) with acylated piperazine linker and two N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) silver(I) and palladium(II) complexes [L2Ag2](PF6)(2) (1) and [L2Pd2Cl4] (2) were prepared. The crystal structures of LH2 center dot Cl-2 and 1 were confirmed by X-ray analysis. In 1, one 26-membered macrometallocycle was generated through two silver(I) ions and two bidentate ligands L. The catalytic activity of 2 was investigated in Sonogashira, Heck-Mizoroki and Suzuki-Miyaura reactions. The results displayed that these C-C coupling reactions can be smoothly carried out under the catalysis of 2.

For the last ten years, ring-shaped pi-conjugated macrocycles possessing radially directed pi-orbitals have been subject to intense research. The electronic properties of these rings are deeply dependent on their size. However, most studies involve the flagship family of nanorings: the cyclo-para-phenylenes. We report herein the synthesis and study of the first examples of cyclofluorenes possessing five constituting fluorene units. The structural, optical and electrochemical properties were elucidated by X-ray crystallography, UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. By comparison with a shorter analogue, we show how the electronic properties of [5]-cyclofluorenes are drastically different from those of [4]-cyclofluorenes, highlighting the key role played by the ring size in the cyclofluorene family.

Many interesting target guest molecules have low symmetry, yet most methods for synthesising hosts result in highly symmetrical capsules. Methods of generating lower symmetry pores are thus required to maximise the binding affinity in host-guest complexes. Herein, we use mixtures of tetraaldehyde building blocks with cyclohexanediamine to access low-symmetry imine cages. Whether a low-energy cage is isolated can be correctly predicted from the thermodynamic preference observed in computational models. The stability of the observed structures depends on the geometrical match of the aldehyde building blocks. One bent aldehyde stands out as unable to assemble into high-symmetry cages-and the same aldehyde generates low-symmetry socially self-sorted cages when combined with a linear aldehyde. We exploit this finding to synthesise a family of low-symmetry cages containing heteroatoms, illustrating that pores of varying geometries and surface chemistries may be reliably accessed through computational prediction and self-sorting.

A Lewis base catalyst Trip-SMe (Trip = triptycenyl) for electrophilic aromatic halogenation using N-halosuccinimides (NXS) is introduced. In the presence of an appropriate activator (as a noncoordinating-anion source), a series of unactivated aromatic compounds were halogenated at ambient temperature using NXS. This catalytic system was applicable to transformations that are currently unachievable except for the use of Br-2 or Cl-2: e.g., multihalogenation of naphthalene, regioselective bromination of BINOL, etc. Controlled experiments revealed that the triptycenyl substituent exerts a crucial role for the catalytic activity, and kinetic experiments implied the occurrence of a sulfonium salt [Trip-S(Me)Br][SbF6] as an active species. Compared to simple dialkyl sulfides, Trip-SMe exhibited a significant charge-separated ion pair character within the halonium complex whose structural information was obtained by the single-crystal X-ray analysis. A preliminary computational study disclosed that the pi system of the triptycenyl functionality is a key motif to consolidate the enhancement of electrophilicity.

Thiele, Chichibabin and Muller hydrocarbons are considered as classical Kekule diradicaloids. Herein we report the synthesis and characterization of acyclic diaminocarbene (ADC)-based Thiele, Chichibabin, and Muller hydrocarbons. The calculated singlet-triplet energy gaps are Delta ES-T = -27.96, -3.70, -0.37 kcal mol(-1), respectively, and gradually decrease with the increasing length of the pi-conjugated spacer (p-phenylene vs. p,p ‘-biphenylene vs. p,p ”-terphenylene) between the two ADC-scaffolds. In agreement with the calculations, we also experimentally observed the enhancement of paramagnetic diradical character as a function of the length of the pi-conjugated spacer. ADC-based Thiele’s hydrocarbon is EPR silent and exhibits very well resolved NMR spectra, whereas ADC-based Muller’s hydrocarbon displays EPR signals and featureless NMR spectra at room temperature. The spacer also has a strong influence on the UV-Vis-NIR spectra of these compounds. Considering that our methodology is modular, these results provide a convenient platform for the synthesis of an electronically modified new class of carbon-centered Kekule diradicaloids.

Newly designed dimethylamine-substituted triphenylamine (TPA) derivatives, N,N’-(1,4-phenylene)bis(N-(4-((tert-butyldimethylsilyl)oxy)phenyl)-N ”,N ”-dimethylbenzene-1,4-diamine) (NTPPA-2Si) and N,N’4(1,1′-biphenyl)-4,4′-diyl)bis(N-(4-((tert-butyldimethylsilyl)oxy)pheny1)-N ”,N ”-dimethylbenzene-1,4-diamine) (NTPB-2Si), with silyl ether protecting groups were readily synthesized. Subsequently, novel electroactive aromatic poly(ether sulfone)s (PES), NTPPA-PES and NTPB-PES, could be obtained from silyl polycondensation. The PESs were readily soluble in commonly used laboratory organic solvents and could be solution-cast into tough and amorphous films with moderate levels of glass-transition temperature around 220 degrees C and thermal stability without significant weight loss up to 400 degrees C under nitrogen or air atmosphere. The Nernst equation method was used to explore the number of electrons transferred at each oxidation step of the targeted two monomers. Furthermore, these two anodic electrochromic PESs were introduced into electrochromic devices accompanied with cathodic heptyl viologen (HV), and the resulted devices demonstrated a high coloration contrast and excellent electrochemical stability. Novel magnetic CoFe2O4-embedded MIL-101(Cr) with tetramethylammonium hydroxide (CoFe2O4/MIL-101T) was prepared through the facile hydrothermal method. Tetramethylammonium hydroxide acts as a template molecule and avoids the recrystallisation of terephthalic acid. The material was applied as the adsorbent in the magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) process coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography to detect the five flame retardants in environmental water samples. Several parameters affecting MSPE efficiency were systematically investigated, such as MIL-101T content, material amount, desorption solvents, adsorption time, solution pH, theoretical maximum enrichment factor (EFmax) and the reusability. Under optimised conditions, good linearities were achieved for five flame retardants with correlation coefficients R-2 > 0.9961. The limits of detections for analytes at the signal-to-noise ratio of three were 0.013-0.071 mu g center dot L-1. This method was applied to the analysis of tap, pond, lake and river waters. The recoveries were in the range of 81.5 +/- 3.2-107.0 +/- 2.3% with the relative standard deviations ranging from 0.11% to 8.66% in four real water samples. The adsorption mechanism was the hydrophobic interaction between the material and the analytes besides pore adsorption action of the material.

Polyelectrolytes play an important role in both natural biological systems and human society, and their synthesis, functional exploration, and profound application are thus essential for biomimicry and creating new materials. In this study, we developed an efficient synthetic methodology for in situ generation of azonia-containing polyelectrolytes in a one-pot manner by using readily accessible nonionic reactant in the presence of commercially available cheap ionic species. The resulting polyelectrolytes are emissive in the solid state and can readily form luminescent photopatterns with different colors. The azonia-containing polyelectrolytes possess extraordinary potency of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, enabling them to impressively kill methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a drug resistant superbug, both in vitro and in vivo.
