Computational analyses of toxicological processes enables high-throughput screening of chemical substances and prediction of their endpoints in biological systems. In particular, quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models have been increasingly applied to assess the environmental effects of a plethora of toxic materials. In recent years, some more highlighted types of toxicants are endocrine disruptors (EDs, which are chemicals that can interfere with any hormone-related metabolism). Because EDs may significantly affect animal development and reproduction, rapidly predicting the adverse effects of EDs using in silico techniques is required. This study presents an in silico method to generate prediction data on the effects of representative EDs in aquatic vertebrates, particularly fish species. The protocol describes an example utilizing the automated workflow of the QSAR Toolbox software developed by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to enable acute ecotoxicity predictions of EDs. As a result, the following are determined: (1) calculation of the numerical correlations between the concentration for 50% of lethality (LC50) and octanol-water partition coefficient (K-ow), (2) output performances in which the LC50 values determined in experiments are compared to those generated by computations, and (3) the dependence of estrogen receptor binding affinity on the relationship between K-ow and LC50.

The first unsubstituted olefin-linked covalent organic framework, termed COF-701, was made by linking 2,4,6-trimethyl-1,3,5-triazine (TMT) and 4,4′-biphenyldicarbaldehyde (BPDA) through Aldol condensation. Formation of the unsubstituted olefin (-CH=CH) linkage upon reticulation is confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and solid-state C-13 cross-polarization magic angle spinning (CP-MAS) NMR spectroscopy of the framework and of its C-13-isotope-labeled analogue. COF-701 is found to be porous (1715 m(2) g(-1)) and to retain its composition and crystallinity under both strongly acidic and basic conditions. The high chemical robustness is attributed to the unsubstituted olefin linkages. Immobilization of the strong Lewis acid BF3 center dot OEt2 in the pores of the structure yields BF3 subset of COF-701. In the material, the catalytic activity of the guest is retained, as evidenced in a benchmark Diels-Alder reaction.

The space integration of the lithiation of aryl halides, the borylation of aryllithiums, and Suzuki-Miyaura coupling using a Pd catalyst supported by a polymer monolith flow reactor without using an intentionally added base was achieved. To scale up the process, a series connection of the monolith Pd reactor was examined. To suppress the increase in the pressure drop caused by the series connection, a monolith reactor having larger pore sizes was developed by varying the temperature of the monolith preparation. The monolithic Pd reactor having larger pore sizes enabled Suzuki-Miyaura coupling at a higher flow rate because of a lower pressure drop and, therefore, an increase in productivity. The present study indicates that series connection of the reactors with a higher flow rate serves as a good method for increasing the productivity without decreasing the yields.

Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC x GC) based on flow-modulation (FM) is gaining increasing attention as an alternative to thermal modulation (TM), the recognized GCxGC benchmark, thanks to its lower operational cost and rugged performance. An accessible, rational procedure to perform method translation between the two platforms would be highly valuable to facilitate compatibility and consequently extend the flexibility and applicability of GC x GC. To enable an effective transfer, the methodology needs to ensure preservation of the elution pattern, separation power, and sensitivity. Here, a loop-type thermal modulation system with dual detection (TM-GCxGC-MS/FID) used for the targeted analysis of allergens in fragrances is selected as reference method. Initially, six different columns configurations are systematically evaluated for the flow-modulated counterpart. The set-up providing the most consistent chromatographic separation (20 m x 0.18 mm d(c) x 0.18 mu m d(f) + 1.8 m x 0.18 mm d(c) x 0.18 mu m d(f)) is further evaluated to assess its overall performance in terms of sensitivity, linearity, accuracy, and pattern reliability. The experimental results convincingly show that the method translation procedure is effective and allows successful transfer of the target template metadata. Using nanoscale building blocks to construct hierarchical materials is a radical new branch point in materials discovery that promises new structures and emergent functionality. Understanding the design principles that govern nanoparticle assembly is critical to moving this field forward. By exploiting mixed ligand environments to target patchy nanoparticle surfaces, we have demonstrated a novel method of colloidal quantum dot (QD) assembly that gives rise to 2D structures. The equilibration of solutions of spherical and quasi-spherical QDs, including CdS, CdSe, and InP, with 2,2′-bipyridine-5,5′-diacrylic acid resulted in the preferential formation of 2D assemblies over the course of days as determined by transmission electron microscopy analysis. Small-angle X-ray scattering confirms the existence of the QD assemblies in solution. The dependence of the assembly on linker properties (length and rigidity), linker concentration, and total concentration was investigated, together with the data point to a mechanism involving ligand redistribution to create a patchy surface that maximizes the steric repulsion of neighboring QDs. By operating in an underexchanged regime, the arising patchiness results in enthalpically preferred directions of cross-linking that can be accessed by thermal equilibration.

Two high-resolution mass spectrometers (HRMS) with different analyzer technology, Orbitrap and hybrid quadrupole time-of-flight (QTOF), were compared with a low-resolution mass spectrometer, quadrupole, to analyse a set of 35 difficult allergens. These difficult allergens are commonly coeluted fragrance allergens with matrix compounds, using standard gas chromatography-mass spectrometer conditions, from the extended list of the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS). Although the fundamental role of chromatographic separation has been demonstrated many times, the aim of this work is to demonstrate the benefits of high-resolution. The added value of high-resolution was illustrated in both a qualitative and a quantitative way. For qualitative aspect, the high resolution extracted ion signals of these two detectors were compared with the low-resolution extracted ion signals. About 50% of the coeluted cases observed with the low-resolution detector are easily resolved by the two high-resolution detectors. For the quantitative aspect, an accuracy profile methodology and a performance metric were used to propose an overall evaluation. The Orbitrap mass spectrometer demonstrated a better overall performance, while the QTOF presented similar or even lower quantification performances than the quadrupole on the set of analysed fragrances.
