In this study, the electrochromic behavior of benzonitrile compounds were investigated. For this, a series of benzonitrile compounds with different chemical structures were synthesized and their electrochemical properties were investigated by cyclic voltammetry. Electrochromic behavior of the benzonitrile derivatives were also investigated by constructing sandwich type electrochromic devices and recording the changes in the UV-vis spectra as a function of applied potential. The compounds exhibited excellent electrochromic properties such as a high optical contrast, low driving voltage, good switching stability, high coloration efficiency, and a fast response time. All five compounds had different colors (orange, yellow-green, reddish-brown, green, blue) and driving voltages that were highly dependent on their chemical structures. The results indicate that benzonitriles are good electrochromic materials and should be of interest for applications such as electrochromic smart windows, information displays, and optical storage devices.

A nickel-catalyzed cross-electrophile coupling reaction between (hetero)aryl bromides and 2,2-difluorovinyl tosylate is presented. This protocol provides facile incorporation of the gem-difluorovinyl moiety in organic molecules. The method features mild reaction conditions, good functional group tolerance, and excellent yields. Furthermore, mechanistic experiments and DFT studies indicate a Ni(0)/Ni(II) catalytic cycle, thus differing from the currently accepted catalytic cycle for nickel-catalyzed C(sp(2))-C(sp(2)) cross-electrophile coupling reactions.

A modular synthesis of multi-functionalized biphenyl, terphenyl and higher linear oligophenylene dicarboxylic acids and pyridine-terminated oligoarenes by stepwise palladium-catalyzed borylation/Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions is described. The presence of several distinct functional groups such as azide, hydroxy, and alkyne, as well as coordinative functional end groups (carboxylic acid or pyridine) combined in a single oligoarene molecular unit at strategic positions offer an advantageous dual-utility. First, these compounds can serve as useful molecular bricks (ditopic organic linkers) in the construction of complex porous crystalline materials. Second, after the assembly into the crystalline coordination networks, orthogonal functional sites within the linker-backbone offer tremendous potential from application perspectives as they can be modified by a wide range of post-synthetic modifications including azide-alkyne click chemistry. This allows further tailoring of the supramolecular assemblies to yield novel multifunctional materials.

Typically, Suzuki couplings used in polymerizations are performed at raised temperatures in inert atmospheres. As a result, the synthesis of aromatic materials that utilize this chemistry often demands expensive and specialized equipment on an industrial scale. Herein, we describe a bimetallic methodology that exploits the distinct reactivities of palladium and copper to perform high yielding aryl-aryl dimerizations and polymerizations that can be performed on a benchtop under ambient conditions. These couplings are facile and can be performed by simple mixing in the open vessel. To demonstrate the utility of this method in the context of polymer synthesis: polyfluorene, polycarbazole, polysilafluorene, and poly(6,12-dihydrodithienoindacenodithiophene) were created at ambient temperature and open to air.

The realization of organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) with performances that support low-cost and large-area fabrication remains an important and challenging topic of investigation. The unique electrical properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) make them promising building blocks for next generation electronic devices. Significant advances in the enrichment of semiconducting SWNTs, particularly via pi-conjugated polymers for purification and dispersal, have allowed the preparation of high-performance OTFTs on a small scale. The intimate interaction of the conjugated polymer with both SWNTs and the dielectric necessitates the investigation of a variety of conjugated polymer derivatives for device optimization. Here, the preparation of polymer-SWNT composites containing carbazole moieties, a monomer unit that has remained relatively overlooked for the dispersal of large-diameter semiconducting SWNTs, is reported. This polymer selectively discriminates semiconducting SWNTs using a facile procedure. OTFTs prepared from these supramolecular complexes are ambipolar, and possess superior mobilities and on/off ratios compared to homo poly(fluorene) dispersions, with hole mobilities from random-network devices reaching 21 cm(2) V-1 s(-1). Atomic force microscopy measurements suggest the poly(carbazole)-SWNT composites form more uniform thin films compared to the poly(fluorene) dispersion. Additionally, treating the silicon dioxide dielectric with octyltrichlorosilane is a simple and effective way to reduce operational hysteresis in SWNT OTFTs.

This study intends to design and prepare a new magnetic copper catalyst and its activity was assessed by carbon-carbon coupling reactions. For this purpose, 1-[3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl] urea (TMSPU), hydrazine and CuI were used sequentially to modify Fe3O4@SiO2 core-shell magnetic nanoparticles to obtain an efficient magnetic transition metal catalyst. Various analytical techniques were used to characterize the catalyst to show that the achieved structure and its properties are well-suited for coupling reactions. Finally, Mizoroki-Heck and Ullmann coupling reactions were performed using Fe3O4@SiO2@PrNCu catalyst. The new catalyst offer simple synthetic procedure, convenient use for routine casework and low price. The Fe3O4@SiO2@PrNCu catalyst was easily separated by means of a permanent and ordinary magnet and the recovered catalyst was reused in six cycles without any significant loss of activity. Two branched oligophenylenethynylenes with phenylene or biphenylene moieties as inter-nodal fragments are synthesized by the Sonogashira reaction for optoelectronic applications. The branching of polyphenylenethynylenes influences the electro-optical properties, but cannot be precisely controlled, while its determination is often hardly addressed. The optical investigation, supported by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) studies, of oligophenylenethynylenes and the properly synthesized model compounds is performed to get insights on the branching and related effect on the material performance. The proposed branched oligophenylenethynylenes are good ultraviolet emitters in solution, while in solid-state aggregation phenomena strongly affect emission properties. However, the interactions between pi-electrons on phenylene and ethynylene of neighboring molecules in films enhance intermolecular charge transport (hole mobility = 3.2 x 10(-3) cm(2) V(-1)s(-1)) making them optimal candidates as hole transport materials in optoelectronic devices. The insertion of the oligophenylenethynylene film as a hole transporting layer in multilayered solution processes blue, green, and red electroluminescent diodes, enhances OLEDs electro-optical properties.

The synthesis of 7-conjugated organic materials through C-H activation and functionalization has recently received increasing attention. In this work, four pyrid-2-yl-appended para-phenylene oligomers (1-4) with two to five phenyl repeating units were synthesized via the Ru-catalyzed C-H activation of 2-phenylpyridine, followed by oxidative homocoupling or the arylation with a para-phenylene dibromide substrate. The single-crystal X-ray data and crystal packing of 1 and 3 are presented. In response to acid stimuli, the blue emissions of 1-3 are replaced by red-shifted cyan emissions, which are associated with the charge transfer transition from the phenylene backbone to the protonated pyridinium units. However, the emission of the longest congener 4 is largely quenched upon protonation. This lengthdependent emission property is rationalized by DFT and TDDFT calculations. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. A series of nanostructured organosilicon luminophores (NOLs) composed of a central 1,4-bis(5-phenyl-1,3-oxazol-2-yl)benzene (POPOP) acceptor chromophore and various peripheral p-terphenyl and 2,5-diphenyl-1,3-oxazole donor fragments have been synthesized for the first time using van Leusen reaction and direct palladium-catalyzed C-arylation of oxazole ring. Due to different functionalities of the silicon branching centers, NOLs with different donor-acceptor ratios have been obtained. The synthesized structures are expected to possess good optical characteristics for use in photonics and optoelectronics.
