The fish bioconcentration factor (BCF) is an important aspect within bioaccumulation assessments. Several factors have been suggested to influence BCF values – including species, developmental stage, mixture exposure, and calculation method. However, their exact contribution to variance in BCF values is unknown. Within this study we assessed the relative impact of these test characteristics on BCF values and analyzed the reproducibility of aquatic exposure bioconcentration tests. Linear mixed effects analyses were performed on a newly develop database to investigate the relationship between the response variable (i.e. lipid normalized log BCF values) and several test characteristics as fixed effects. Lower BCF values were observed for substances that were simultaneously applied with high molecular weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons compared to single substance exposure (with an average difference of -0.81 log BCF). Also, lower BCFs upon kinetic determination were observed compared to steady-state BCFs (log BCF -0.27), and lower BCFs for species from the Ostariophysi subcohort level (log BCF -0.17 to -0.15). In addition, data analysis showed high variation within BCF values for single substances (average SD = log BCF 0.21), which questions the robustness of the current bioaccumulation assessments. For example, the 95% confidence range of a BCF value of 2500 ranges from 953 (‘not-bioaccumulative’) to 6561 (‘very bioaccumulative’). Our results show that the use of one single BCF leads to a high uncertainty in bioaccumulation assessments. We strongly recommend that within future bioconcentration studies, the used experimental design and test conditions are described in detail and justified to support solid interpretation. Here, we present the use of mini-emulsion polymerization to generate small particle analogues of three insoluble conjugated polymer photocatalysts. These materials show hydrogen evolution rates with a sacrificial donor under broadband illumination that are between two and three times higher than the corresponding bulk polymers. The most active emulsion particles displayed a hydrogen evolution rate of 60.6mmol h(-1) g(-1) under visible light (lambda > 420 nm), which is the highest reported rate for an organic polymer. More importantly, the emulsion particles display far better catalytic lifetimes than previous polymer nanoparticles and they are also effective at high concentrations, allowing external quantum efficiencies as high as 20.4% at 420 nm. A limited degree of aggregation of the polymer particles maximizes the photocatalytic activity, possibly because of light scattering and enhanced light absorption.

We report a strategy for making COFs with valency 8 (cubes) and infinity (rods). The linker 1,4-boronophenylphosphonic acid-designed to have boron and phosphorus as an isoelectronic combination of carbon-group elements-was condensed into a porous, polycubane structure (BP-COF-1) formulated as (-B4P4O12-)(-C6H4-)4. It was characterized by x-ray powder diffraction techniques, which revealed cubes linked with phenyls. The isoreticular forms (BP-COF-2 to 5) were similarly prepared and characterized. Large single crystals of a constitutionally isomeric COF (BP-COF-6), composed of rod units, were also synthesized using the same strategy, thus propelling COF chemistry into a new valency regime.

The preparation of copolymers bearing N-methylcarbazole and 2,7-linked 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene units has been carried out using the N-methyl-2,7-di(2-(3,4-ethylenedioxythienyl))carbazole monomer, which has been chemically synthesized through the Stille coupling reaction of 2,7-dibromo-N-methylcarbazole and tributyl-stannylated 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene. Then, the monomer was electropolymerized by chronoamperometry in acetonitrile with 0.1 M LiClO4 under a constant potential of 0.70 V and using steel AISI 316 electrodes. The electrochemical activity and stability, charge-discharge capacity, charge transfer resistance and surface properties (i.e. morphology, topography and wettability) of the resulting polymer have been characterized and compared with those reported for poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene). Finally, the polymer has been obtained by potentiodynamic sweep, applying around 100 cyclic voltammetry steps to an acetonitrile solution of the N-methyl-2,7-di(2-(3,4-ethylenedioxythienyl))carbazole monomer with 0.1 M LiClO4. Results show that although this technique has been mostly used to electropolymerize diheteroaromatic-subtituted carbazoles, the resulting material presents serious disadvantages with respect to that produced by chronoamperometry under a constant potential.

Four dinuclear organotin halides of composition XnPh(3-n)SnCH2Si(Me)(2)-C12H8-Si(Me)(2)CH2-SnPh(3-n)Xn (X = Cl, I; n = 1, 2) were prepared and combined in 1:1 stoichiometric reactions with potassium 2,5-pyridinedicarboxylate, 3,5-pyridinedicarboxylate, and piperazine bis-dithiocarbamate, respectively. Solar steam generation has been proven to be one of the most efficient approaches for harvesting solar energy for diverse applications such as distillation, desalination, and production of freshwater. Here, the synthesis of monolithic carbon aerogels by facile carbonization of conjugated microporous polymer nanotubes as efficient solar steam generators is reported. The monolithic carbon-aerogel networks consist of randomly aggregated hollow-carbon-nanotubes (HCNTs) with 100-250 nm in diameter and a length of up to several micrometers to form a hierarchically nanoporous network structure. Treatment of the HCNTs aerogels with an ammonium peroxydisulfate/sulfuric acid solution endows their superhydrophilic wettability which is beneficial for rapid transportation of water molecules. In combination with their abundant porosity (92%) with open channel structure, low apparent density (57 mg cm(-3)), high specific surface area (826 m(2) g(-1)), low thermal conductivity (0.192 W m(-1) K-1), and broad light absorption (99%), an exceptionally high conversion efficiency of 86.8% is achieved under 1 sun irradiation, showing great potential as an efficient photothermal material for solar steam generation. The findings may provide a new opportunity for tailored design and creation of new carbon-aerogels-based photothermal materials with adjustable structure, tunable porosity, simple fabrication process, and high solar energy conversion efficiency for solar steam generation.

Traditionally, electrochromic materials rely on counter redox materials like ferrocene to realize redox processes. In this work, two novel, closely related series of electrochromic materials bearing push-pull electronic structure were designed and synthesised (N,N,N’,N’-tetra(pyridin-4-yl)-1,4-phenylenediamine derivatives (TPPDs) and N,N,N ‘,N ‘-tetra(pyridin-4-yl)benzidine derivatives (TPBDs)). When stimulated by an external electric field, both series of compounds exhibited intramolecular charge transfer because of their push-pull electronic structures. Therefore, the TPPDs and TPBDs could undergo redox processes without the assistance of counter electrode chemicals. Furthermore, the TPPDs and TPBDs could replace the electrolyte that is required in conventional electrochromic devices (ECDs) because of their conductivity. This allowed the fabrication of a simple, single-component ECD.

A novel family of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-incorporated Se-Fe-Cu compounds, bis-1,3-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene (bis-Me-2-imy)-containing compound [(mu(4)-Se)Fe-3(CO)(9){Cu(Me-2-imy)}(2)] (2), bis-N-methyl- or bis-N-isopropyl-substituted benzimidazol-2-ylidene (bis-Me-2-bimy or bis-Pr-i(2)-bimy)-incorporated compounds [(mu(4)-Se)Fe-3(CO)(9){Cu(Me-2-bimy)}(2)] (3) or [(mu(4)-Se)Fe-3(CO)(9){Cu(Pr-i(2)-bimy)}(2)] (4), and a bis-1,3-dimethyl-4,5-dichloroimidazol-2-ylidene (bis-Me-2-Cl-2-imy)-containing compound [(mu(3)-Se)Fe-3(CO)(9){Cu(Me-2-Cl-2-imy)}(2)] (5), were synthesized in moderate yields in facile one-pot reactions of the ternary pre-designed compound [(mu(3)-Se)Fe-3(CO)(9){Cu(MeCN)}(2)] (1) with the corresponding imidazolium salts and (KOBu)-Bu-t in THF in an ice-water bath. Single-crystal X-ray analyses revealed that the Me-2-imy compound 2 or the Me-2-bimy compound 3 each exhibited a trigonal bipyramidal SeFe3(CO)(9)Cu geometry with an Fe2Cu plane further capped by a Cu(Me-2-imy) or Cu(Me-2-bimy) fragment, respectively, with one long Cu-Cu covalent bond. In addition, compound 4 also comprised a trigonal bipyramidal SeFe3(CO)(9)Cu core structure, but the second Cu(Pr-i(2)-bimy) group bridged the equatorial Fe-Fe edge with two unbonded Cu atoms, due to the presence of a sterically bulky Pr-i(2)-bimy fragment. On the other hand, the strong electron-withdrawing chloro-containing NHC compound 5 showed a comparatively open tetrahedral SeFe3(CO)(9) metal core, where two Fe-Fe edges each were further bridged by a Cu(Me-2-Cl-2-imy) fragment. Due to the nonclassical C-H center dot center dot center dot O(carbonyl) hydrogen bonds between the CO groups of the SeFe3(CO)(9)Cu-2 core and CH moieties of the neighboring NHC ligands, both compounds 2 and 3 comprised a one-dimensional network, while compounds 4 and 5 each were made up of a two-dimensional framework in the solid state, which efficiently enhanced the stability of these Se-Fe-Cu NHC compounds. Importantly, all of these synthesized Se-Fe-Cu NHC compounds 2-5 had pronounced catalytic activities for the homocoupling of arylboronic acids with high catalytic yields. Finally, these Se-containing Fe-Cu NHC compounds further represented excellent models for studying chalcogen effects in comparison to their Te analogs, as demonstrated by their catalytic performances and electrochemical behaviors, and by DFT calculations.

The added value of high-resolution was illustrated in both a qualitative and a quantitative way. For qualitative aspect, the high resolution extracted ion signals of these two detectors were compared with the low-resolution extracted ion signals. About 50% of the coeluted cases observed with the low-resolution detector are easily resolved by the two high-resolution detectors. For the quantitative aspect, an accuracy profile methodology and a performance metric were used to propose an overall evaluation. The Orbitrap mass spectrometer demonstrated a better overall performance, while the QTOF presented similar or even lower quantification performances than the quadrupole on the set of analysed fragrances.
