We have used functionalized carbazoles and indenoquonoxalines as the main building units and enthynyl groups as the pi-linkages to construct two novel dendritic fluorophores and studied their degenerate multi-photon absorption properties in both the solution phase and the neat-film state within femtosecond and nanosecond regions. In our experiments, these model compounds are found to manifest strong and widely dispersed two-photon absorption as well as effective power-limiting properties against ultra-short laser pulses in the near-IR region. In addition, both chromophores exhibit medium to strong three-photon-induced fluorescence, indicating such scaffold may serve as a reference structural motif for the development of three-photon materials.

This study intends to design and prepare a new magnetic copper catalyst and its activity was assessed by carbon-carbon coupling reactions. For this purpose, 1-[3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl] urea (TMSPU), hydrazine and CuI were used sequentially to modify Fe3O4@SiO2 core-shell magnetic nanoparticles to obtain an efficient magnetic transition metal catalyst. Various analytical techniques were used to characterize the catalyst to show that the achieved structure and its properties are well-suited for coupling reactions. Finally, Mizoroki-Heck and Ullmann coupling reactions were performed using Fe3O4@SiO2@PrNCu catalyst. The new catalyst offer simple synthetic procedure, convenient use for routine casework and low price. The Fe3O4@SiO2@PrNCu catalyst was easily separated by means of a permanent and ordinary magnet and the recovered catalyst was reused in six cycles without any significant loss of activity. Organic pi-conjugated polymers (CPs) have been intensively explored for a variety of critical photocatalytic applications in the past few years. Nevertheless, CPs for efficient CO2 photoreduction have been rarely reported, which is mainly due to the lack of suitable polymers with sufficient solar light harvesting ability, appropriate energy level alignment and good activity and selectivity in multi-electron-transfer photoreduction of CO2 reaction. We report here the rational design and synthesis of two novel triphenylamine (TPA) based conjugated microporous polymers (CMPs), which can efficiently catalyze the reduction of CO2 to CO using water vapor as an electron donor under ambient conditions without adding any co-catalyst. Nearly 100% selectivity and a high CO production rate of 37.15 mu mol h(-1) g(-1) are obtained for OXD-TPA, which is significantly better than that for BP-TPA (0.9 mu mol h(-1) g(-1)) as a result of co-monomer change from biphenyl to 2,5-diphenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole. This difference could be mainly ascribed to the synergistic effect of a decreased optical band gap, improved interface charge transfer and increased CO2 uptake for OXD-TPA. This contribution is expected to spur further interest in the rational design of porous conjugated polymers for CO2 photoreduction.

A novel family of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-incorporated Se-Fe-Cu compounds, bis-1,3-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene (bis-Me-2-imy)-containing compound [(mu(4)-Se)Fe-3(CO)(9){Cu(Me-2-imy)}(2)] (2), bis-N-methyl- or bis-N-isopropyl-substituted benzimidazol-2-ylidene (bis-Me-2-bimy or bis-Pr-i(2)-bimy)-incorporated compounds [(mu(4)-Se)Fe-3(CO)(9){Cu(Me-2-bimy)}(2)] (3) or [(mu(4)-Se)Fe-3(CO)(9){Cu(Pr-i(2)-bimy)}(2)] (4), and a bis-1,3-dimethyl-4,5-dichloroimidazol-2-ylidene (bis-Me-2-Cl-2-imy)-containing compound [(mu(3)-Se)Fe-3(CO)(9){Cu(Me-2-Cl-2-imy)}(2)] (5), were synthesized in moderate yields in facile one-pot reactions of the ternary pre-designed compound [(mu(3)-Se)Fe-3(CO)(9){Cu(MeCN)}(2)] (1) with the corresponding imidazolium salts and (KOBu)-Bu-t in THF in an ice-water bath. Single-crystal X-ray analyses revealed that the Me-2-imy compound 2 or the Me-2-bimy compound 3 each exhibited a trigonal bipyramidal SeFe3(CO)(9)Cu geometry with an Fe2Cu plane further capped by a Cu(Me-2-imy) or Cu(Me-2-bimy) fragment, respectively, with one long Cu-Cu covalent bond. In addition, compound 4 also comprised a trigonal bipyramidal SeFe3(CO)(9)Cu core structure, but the second Cu(Pr-i(2)-bimy) group bridged the equatorial Fe-Fe edge with two unbonded Cu atoms, due to the presence of a sterically bulky Pr-i(2)-bimy fragment. On the other hand, the strong electron-withdrawing chloro-containing NHC compound 5 showed a comparatively open tetrahedral SeFe3(CO)(9) metal core, where two Fe-Fe edges each were further bridged by a Cu(Me-2-Cl-2-imy) fragment. Due to the nonclassical C-H center dot center dot center dot O(carbonyl) hydrogen bonds between the CO groups of the SeFe3(CO)(9)Cu-2 core and CH moieties of the neighboring NHC ligands, both compounds 2 and 3 comprised a one-dimensional network, while compounds 4 and 5 each were made up of a two-dimensional framework in the solid state, which efficiently enhanced the stability of these Se-Fe-Cu NHC compounds. Importantly, all of these synthesized Se-Fe-Cu NHC compounds 2-5 had pronounced catalytic activities for the homocoupling of arylboronic acids with high catalytic yields. Finally, these Se-containing Fe-Cu NHC compounds further represented excellent models for studying chalcogen effects in comparison to their Te analogs, as demonstrated by their catalytic performances and electrochemical behaviors, and by DFT calculations.

Exciton binding energy has been regarded as a crucial parameter for mediating charge separation in polymeric photocatalysts. Minimizing the exciton binding energy of the polymers can increase the yield of charge-carrier generation and thus improve the photocatalytic activities, but the realization of this approach remains a great challenge. Herein, a series of linear donor-acceptor conjugated polymers has been developed to minimize the exciton binding energy by modulating the charge-transfer pathway. The results reveal that the reduced energy loss of the charge-transfer state can facilitate the electron transfer from donor to acceptor, and thus, more electrons are ready for subsequent reduction reactions. The optimized polymer, FSO-FS, exhibits a remarkable photochemical performance under visible light irradiation.

Selective and large-scale synthesis of [8]-cycloparaphenylene (CPP) was achieved in seven steps starting from commercially available 4-bromo-4′-hydroxybiphenyl and 4,4’dibromobiphenyl. The key unsymmetrical tetraring unit, 4-bromophenyl and 4′-bromobiphenyl-substituted cis-1,4-bis(triethylsiloxy)-2,5-cyclohexadiene-1,4-diyl (5fA), was synthesized on an similar to 50 g scale by stereoselective cis-addition of 4-bromo-4′-lithiobiphenyl to 4-(4-bromophenyl)-4-hydroxy-2,5-cyclohexadienl-one, which was synthesized on an similar to 100 g scale. Platinum-mediated selective dimerization of the four-ring unit 5fB and subsequent reductive aromatization of the cyclohexadiene-diyl by H2SnCl4 gave 2 g of [8]CPP in 6.6% overall yield (10.2% on small scale).

I found the field of Chemistry very interesting. Saw the article Synthesis of Long-Chain Alkanoyl Benzenes by an Aluminum(III) Chloride-Catalyzed Destannylative Acylation Reaction published in 2021. This paper describes the facile synthesis of haloaryl compounds with long-chain alkanoyl substituents by the destannylative acylation of haloaryls bearing tri-n-butyltin (Bu3Sn) substituents. The method allows the synthesis of many important synthons for novel functional materials in a highly efficient manner. The halo-tri-n-butyltin benzenes are obtained by the lithium-halogen exchange of commercially available bis-haloarenes and the subsequent reaction with Bu3SnCl. Under typical Friedel-Crafts conditions, i.e., the presence of an acid chloride and AlCl3, the haloaryls are acylated through destannylation. The reactions proceed fast (<5 min) at low temperatures and thus are compatible with aromatic halogen substituents. Furthermore, the method is applicable to para-, meta-, and ortho-substitution and larger systems, as demonstrated for biphenyls. The generated tin byproducts were efficiently removed by trapping with silica/KF filtration, and most long-chain haloaryls were obtained chromatography-free. Molecular structures of several products were determined by X-ray single-crystal diffraction, and the crystal packing was investigated by mapping Hirshfeld surfaces onto individual molecules. A feasible reaction mechanism for the destannylative acylation reaction is proposed and supported through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. DFT results in combination with NMR-scale control experiments unambiguously demonstrate the importance of the tin substituent as a leaving group, which enables the acylation. Yamamoto coupling polymerization has been used for the synthesis of polymeric chiral organocatalysts. Cinchona squaramide derivatives with dibromophenyl moiety were polymerized under the Yamamoto coupling conditions to afford the corresponding chiral polymers in good yields. Using this technique, novel cinchona alkaloid polymers containing the squaramide moiety were designed and successfully synthesized. In addition to the homopolymerization of cinchona squaramide monomers with a dibromophenyl group, achiral comonomers such as dibromobenzene were copolymerized with the cinchona monomers to yield chiral copolymers. These chiral polymers were successfully utilized as polymeric catalysts in asymmetric Michael addition reactions. Good to excellent enantioselectivities were observed for different types of asymmetric Michael reactions. Using the chiral homopolymer catalyst P4, almost perfect diastereoselectivity (>100:1) with 99% ee was obtained for the reaction between methyl 2-oxocyclopentanecarboxylate 25 and trans-beta-nitrostyrene 17. The polymer catalysts developed in this study have robust structures and can be reused several times without a loss in their catalytic activities.

Typically, Suzuki couplings used in polymerizations are performed at raised temperatures in inert atmospheres. As a result, the synthesis of aromatic materials that utilize this chemistry often demands expensive and specialized equipment on an industrial scale. Herein, we describe a bimetallic methodology that exploits the distinct reactivities of palladium and copper to perform high yielding aryl-aryl dimerizations and polymerizations that can be performed on a benchtop under ambient conditions. These couplings are facile and can be performed by simple mixing in the open vessel. To demonstrate the utility of this method in the context of polymer synthesis: polyfluorene, polycarbazole, polysilafluorene, and poly(6,12-dihydrodithienoindacenodithiophene) were created at ambient temperature and open to air.

Next-generation membranes use highly engineered polymeric structures with enhanced chain rigidity, yet difficulties in polymerization often limit molecular weights required for film formation. Addition-type polynorbornenes are promising materials for industrial gas separations, but suffer from these limitations owing to endo-exo monomeric mixtures that restrict polymerization sites. In this work, a synthetic approach employing the reductive Mizoroki-Heck reaction resulted in exo-selective products that polymerized up to >99% yields for ROMP and addition-type polymers, achieving molecular weights an order of magnitude higher than addition-type polymers from endo-exo mixtures and impressive side group stereoregularity. Due to this increased macromolecular control, these polynorbornenes demonstrate unique solubility-selective permeation with mixed gas selectivities that exceed commercially used PDMS. In addition to thermal and structural characterization, XRD and computational studies confirmed the results of pure and mixed-gas transport testing, which show highly rigid membranes with favorably disrupted chain packing.
